1. Introduction Commissioned by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), Flycatcher Internet Research carried out a survey for law students throughout Europe on interests and expectations about their study, extracurricular activities, law students’ associations in general and ELSA in particular. 1.1 Target group
Law students (both ELSA members and non-members) in 41 countries and more than 300 universities could participate in the survey. Publicity and invitations for the survey were managed by ELSA International in Brussels. 1.2 Survey method Flycatcher Internet Research is specialized in online research, meaning that surveys can be completed via internet. Flycatcher published the survey online, which could be accessed by clicking on a link provided to ELSA. 1.3 The questionnaire The questionnaire was developed by ELSA in consultation with Flyctacher. The questionnaire consisted of a general part for all law students and a specific part for ELSA members only. The following topics were covered: General part:
• Interests, expectations and shortcomings of the current study; • Extracurricular activities; • ELSA awareness and membership; • ELSA activities; • International network benefits; • Interest in international LL.M., traineeship and job; • Demographics.
Specific part (ELSA members only):
• ELSA membership evaluation; • ELSA events; • (Board) participation.
1.4 Response In total 4180 respondents took part in de survey. A response overview is provided in the following table:
Response overview ELSA members non-members total

1.5 Reliability and generalizability Since not all law students in Europe (total population) participated in the survey, results found in this study will deviate from results for the total population. Results should therefore be interpreted while keeping certain reliability standards in mind. Reliability is an important concept because it provides us with the possibility to draw conclusions for the total population based on the results of this survey. Based on the total number of respondents and the results of this survey, accuracy margins can be calculated using the following formula:
1,96 · · 1
When generalizing results based on this formula for the total population of law students in Europe, conclusions can be stated with 95% reliability. The maximum accuracy margin for the group respondents (n=4180) is 1,5% with 95% reliability. The reliability level of 95% would not change if more respondents participated in the survey. More respondents would only influence the maximum accuracy margin (which would be lower in this case). Example:
22. Are you interested in studying an LL.M. abroad? non-
members members total definitely 38% 49% 44% probably 38% 36% 37% probably not 18% 11% 14% definitely not 4% 1% 3% I already did / am doing an LL.M. abroad 3% 3% 3% total 100% 100% 100% In the example above 44% of the respondents indicated they are definitely interested in studying an LL.M. abroad. The accuracy margin for the total population would in this case be:
1,96 · 0,44 · 1 0,44
4180 1,5%
In this case we can be 95% certain that the total number of respondents that is definitely interested in studying an LL.M. abroad will be between 42,5% and 45,5% (44% +/- 1,5%). 1.6 Statistical analyses To gain further insights into difference between groups of respondents, the following statistical analyses are performed: - breakdown ELSA members vs. non-members (chapter 2.1) - breakdown active vs. passive ELSA members for questions 4, 5 and 16 (chapter 2.2) - breakdown based on year of study for question 5 (chapter 2.3) Statistical significant differences are highlighted by the colours red and blue. In red highlighted numbers show a positive deviation from the numbers in blue. In other words, in red highlighted options are chosen (significantly) more often by respondents in this group compared to respondents in the group where the blue number is shown. Colourless numbers depict insignificant or no difference between the groups. In chapters 2.2 and 2.3 only questions where a statistically significant difference was found are reported.

Note: Only law students are included in the results (question 1). Where figures are rounded off, the sum of the numbers may deviate from the total.
Please note: Significant differences between ELSA members and non-members should be evaluated based on the relative difference. Due to the large number of respondents, statistical tests mark a lot of differences as 'statistical significant'. The reported percentages give an indication whether this difference is also relevant for ELSA.

ELSA is present in close to 300 faculties in 41 countries in Europe. One of the main aims of ELSA is to foster mutual understanding of law students, to provide opportunities of international exchange and to help students learn and experience the legal culture of other countries. In order to do this, ELSA works on international projects and events, on study visits and on an international traineeship programme. ELSA also aims at choosing internationally focused topics for events and projects.

I still appreciate the opportunity to take part in some ELSA events as audienceI already have such experience from other law stundents' organisationi am active in another organisationI am at the end of my studiesI am at the end of my studies.I am in the later stages of studiesI am not a student any moreI dont like politics of any kind, politicians neitherI finish my studies this springI have already graduated and currently workI have already organized many events, almost done with my university careerI have finished my studies and not sure if it is now possible to take up even more choresi need to work for livingI should have done it earlier. I feel it¿s starting to be too late as I¿m starting to be close to graduation.I soon finish my studiesI started working a full-time job so I can't fully dedicate myself to it.I took part in all the possible positions at local and national level in my group so far. Time to leave :)I was a member of the board in one of the ELSA Local Groupi will graduate soonI'm an active member in our student association so there's no more time for Elsai'm an alumniI'm going to graduate soon and I live far away from my uni now.Im about to finish my studies so I have no time.moving back to canadaOur local boar is not working in the way it should. I am totally disapointed for many years in ELSA but not in ELSA International
Sometimes it seems that active ELSA members have their own clique and it's hard to get in. Some of the active ELSA members also come across as bit of wannabees, who think they're somehow important after getting a title in ELSA.the events did not always seem seriously preparedToo much talk, too little work, everybody wants to go to ICM just to party, not to keep the network going and developing.

Appendix 14
Note: The comments below are literal representations of the reactions of respondents, and may contain spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
If you have any comments regarding the topic of this questionnaire, please use the box below:
non-members:) fun funalla penultima domanda, non funziona il menù per la selezione dell'università. infatti io ho dovuto selezionare roma tre, pur avendo studiando alla sapienza, perchè altrimenti non mi faceva andare avanti!Elsa LinzElsa Linz!ELSA should organise more STEP traineeships and be more involved within international institutions and organisations projects such as EU. Lack of that means that AIESEC & AEGEE are more publicly involved and students are more familiar with it.ELSA: you made my day! :-)For my opinion, this was a well constructed questionnaire.Good luck!Great work, Elsa!Hi; I study in Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky", not in UNWE...Just the "sofia university" wasn't selectable ;)Hi!! I think you should add the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin to the list the people choose which university the are studyinghost son in the 2003 in an english family in london for 3 months; i was been an erasmus student too in the 2010 academy year in spain; free mover student in the 2011 academy year in spain; please select me! ;)I am a very active student and very internationally orientated - I am already looking to ¿go to Singapore to study for a semester (hopefulley) in jan 2014. I want the world to be my playground and work with different people all over.I believe that this initiative is a great way to stimulate the development of an international type of work and aware of global development.I finished my studies last year. Now I am a Master- student in the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (in Civil law). Thank you!I hope that ELSA will stay this active among law students and in society as whole.i m bestI resent being offered answer "before 2008" in the question when did you begin studying. It's implies that someone is not a very good student; althrough students who began in 2007 are still under 5 years.I want this prize :) The questionnaire wasn't boring.. Greetings, *****.I want to be a part of itI would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the Association and about the available opportunities. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.I would like to work with you!i would that Elsa enter into agreements with my university of jurisprudenze of CatanzaroI' would like to be part of ELSA !I'm studying at the university of Bologna (Italy). It wasn't in the list.In one of the last questions, I chose to indicate my home university, but I moved to the UK and studied at other universities afterwards. it would have been convenient to be able to indicate that.In the questionnaire we should be able to give a feedback to our regional ELSA group, since the one in Padova, Italy, had problems of stealing money. ELSA members in charge should be chosen better.it was interesting quiz)Pretty hard to decide which profession I would prefer over the other on the spot. It takes more than 10 minutes, usually.Thank you for giving students a chance to participate in questionnaires that are profounding and interesting.Thank you for questionnaire!thank you:)Thank you)))Thanks for helping studentsThanks! The question about sorting possible careers is not answerable on touchscreen - there is no possibility to drag the professions (at least on Samsung Galaxy S2, Android 4, default web browser) so i had to reopen the test in the PC and answer all the previous questions again...
Flycatcher Internet Research 66 ELSA market research
The questionnaire was very good, and it is very educative about the goals and missions of ELSA and can theach as about the opportunies that we have like law students. The SortOrder (question 28 or 29) is very badly designed. Most people are just interested in two to four legal job possibilities, but are forced to order all possibilities. That means almost everybody will properly order the first five or so and then just randomly order the rest. The topic is great. I would be enchanted if all these aspects were taken into consideration and solved. There are two Universities in Turku, Finland; the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. Åbo Akademi University was not one of the options in the questionanire. They were apropriate questions for this type of competitions. This is great opportunity! Thank you! This questionnaire is very interestedThis questionnaire is very useful! This was a very interesting questionnaire which I enjoyed participating in. It gave me a good thought on what I want for my future within the legal world and it also what I think the University is missing in its courses.TNX, Good luck! :)Very good job. I would like to participate to seminars of Elsa program! It will be very good, great experience.Very good questionnaire. Clear questions and answers.well done, ELSA students!
members- Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power level? - It's OVER 9000!!!!A good questionnaire! :)a tip for next time: there seems to be some lack of coherence in the questionnaire. some of the questions don't really make sense for active members or board members, others don't make sense for passive members.A very well constructed questionnaire. At one of the last questions with the sorting of the order of options I had great probs on my iPad. It doesn't understand flash and I didn't finish my test for the first time. The rest if amazing ^.^ ThanksBest wishes all participantsBest wishes!Congratulations for creating such a complete quiz.Congratulations for doing this LSMR! :)ELSA is cool!ELSA is great, I love what you're doing, especially the conferences!Elsa is the bestELSA¿s great, keep making law student¿s life easier and more interesting!excellentExcellent and competent survey. Well done!Go ELSA! :)Good job everyone! I appreciate the Questionnaire a lot! :)Good job! :)Good job.Good luckGood Luck :)Good luck !Good luck ELSA!Good luck with the research! Best Regards, ******good luck. the elsa survey can teach you a lot.Good questionnaire, although it is quite long. Page 29 did not work very well. It would be better if you only had to list the positions that you found interesting and not rank all of the different positions. Good job over all.Good questionnaire!Good work, but i think that this Market research should not be so long, not because of me, but because of the normal or potencial members, that are not so interested in ELSA as a almost former officerGreat idea to make that questionnaire.great job :)Great job!Great job! Good questionnaireGreat job! :)
Flycatcher Internet Research 67 ELSA market research
Great questionnaireGreat questionnaire! ELSA deserves it! :)Great questionnaire! Very useful and deep for thinking! :)Great survey! Looking forward to take part of the results!great work ELSA, very interesting questionnaire :)
I already studied abroad taking part to the LLP erasmus program. I spent an year in Spain and i loved this experience. I can talk italian, english and spanish, and i would love to do another experience abroad to improve my skills.I am very happy that ELSA is conducting such a research!I am Vice President Marketing for ELSA Palermo. I just love ELSA. RegardsI attend Luiss university but I couldn't select iti found the questionnaire very interesting and not tiring at all ,which is rare as it concerns surveys !I have no comments! congartulation all of you who compsed this questionnaire.I'm looking forward to hear from you!:)I hope I will be the winner of lottery! :)I hope it would be the most successfull EMR ever! :)I hope my answers contributed to ELSA's and all students's causeI hope there will be soon an opportunity to participate in an internship programm in the Netherlands!I Love Elsai LOVE ELSA !I love ELSA! Thank you a lot!! :)I loved ELSA so much! I was a secretary general in local board in Nis Serbia. I was one of the head members in organization of first ELSA EX YU in Novi Sad. But after that event I was disapointed in my local board. They made ELSA LG Nis in one political local group and not student international organization. After lefting ELSA LG Nis,independently I continue my work with LG Novi Sad and little LG Belgrade. They had great comunication and pashion for making this organization what its really about. I am very sorry for not exploring all of the ELSA International seminars, conferences and all ICMs, and not having the chanse to meet other ELSA members abroad because I was sabotaged from the president of ELSA Nis, and ELSA Serbia in that time. I was the only woman in ELSA Nis ever that wantet to truly wanted to get alive all of the ELSA programs and internship bru because of the vanity of the male mambers of my boar I didnt had suport. That is why I started my cooperation with ELSA Novi Sad the most. Last year I finish my studies. Now, I am on my LL.M for Internationl business law at University of Nis and just started working in the largest law firm in south Serbia with my major-International law and trade law. I got lucky I had a chance to work with the best attorneys in Serbia. But, I missed my chance to travel abroad on all ICMs and trainings. Probably, some of the members of ELSA Internation can recognize me and on this occasion I send greetings. Hope I will visit you in Brussels and finaly have a chance to see that great ELSA house that I wanted to visit so much at the time. Feel free to contact me, I love ELSA, I mean I love real ELSA so much! ******I study at Sapienza University of Rome: I would have selected it in the box but it's not allowed. Thank youI study at the "Universität Potsdam", which unfortunately was not listed, so i chose the georgraphically closest university.I think it is a very good idea to question students about their needs and expectations so that the organisation may respond to them.
I think this is an amazing opportunity that ELSA is giving. I will definitely want to join these important and special events. This spring I was honored to attend a SVI in Bruxelles to visit the European Parliament and other important institutes. Olso, I had the opportunity to visit ELSA House for the first time and it was a great experience. From the beginnings, when I joined ELSA I knew that it will be a great opportunity to me, and I had the chance to meet new people and make friends, to attend many events ( local, national and international- most of them local) and from now on I want to explore more the international projects because they are very important and they have interesting topics and also I will love to meet new ELSA members.i wish elsa can give me an opportunity!I wish you all lots of ELSA Spirit!I would like to say, that i am very satisfied for being a part of this questionnaire,i belive it is very necessary in order to learn law students opinions and make them being heard in law society.I would love to experience how other ELSA groups around the Europe work.I'm definitely interested in IP law and this semester I have joined an essay competition and gained 1st prize from Franklin Pierce the Center Of Intellectual Property. If I win this lottery, I'll attend the Law School about IP in Romania and have a chance to improve myself. Thank you :)I'm glad beeing a member of ELSA Assotiation! It's a great expirience and also it gives a great knowledge to law students in my contry and help them to develop their working skills.I'm interested in ICTY intership next year from februar to april or in a simmilar time. Is there any way you can help me with that?ICT Law was not mentioned among the fields of law we are interested in.In multiple choise should be Maria Curie-Skłodowska UniversityIt is possible to study law and another degree at the same time.It should be quicker!it was a lot of fun!

It was a pleasure. It was a very thourough questionnaire indeed! It was a very useful survey with good questions.it was very intersting and that kind of questionnaire that hepl ou to understan more not just to answer some qustionsJust to help out... One of the questions (about being an active ELSA member or an on board member, which would I rather be -or something like that-), the answers weren't exactly clear. I mean if I answered with "Definitely" (which I did), it will probably be understood that I would definitely like to be an active member and an "on board" member, both, at the same time. In my case, that wasn't what I wanted to be understood, because being an active member, organizing and whatnot is a much more fruitful experience than just being on board, so to speak. That being said, that's the only "minus" I found. The rest is a big plus (and a great idea, by the way, offering a possible fee free opportunity). Keep up the good work, ******Keep working like you are doing! I wish to thank you a lot, I use to lern a lot from you.Long live Elsa Moot Court ² :)
Maybe the biggest question while you work for ELSA, while you looking for new peolpe in ELSA is: what ELSA wants? whats the big goal? parties? super NCMs and ICMs? that's cool for sure, but is it enough. I'm looking for something deeper, because I hjave to choose between giving my time to ELSA or giving my time to find a job, study, etc. etc. But I Love ELSA since I think is got a great potential, I think it can help change the world...Me, as a legal intern at Cerrahoglu Law Firm, would always be glad to help you guys. -*****
N/A Maybe to ask if people are member of a board because the question was "would you like to be an active member or member of the board?". So people who complete this formular can be member of a local board (like me for example). It is different to the impact of answers I think. But great for this study it's very interessant and I hope the answers will be relevant! Great initiative.Next time, please use another survey tool. I almost didnt finish because it was so bad.Nice idea and good questions! But the green header does not fit the corporate design ;-)nice questionnaire . hopefully it will helpsNice work team !!!No options to select 'other jobs' like legal editor, conference manager, business innovation manager (all that comes with ELSA-skills that I currently use for my job)No, I just want to win and fly to Vilnius.Page 27 has some issues. Does not indicate my selection on Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, so I had to choose another university in order to proceed through the questionnaire.please paying attention about STEP procedure as an IB. Being fast is hard but essential.question no.2 there is no information technology law ( IT law)Questionnaire was pleasant to fill.Questions and answers were correctly selected. Thank you !really good topic to understand why people join ELSA.Really interesting, the questionnaire cleared my thoughts for myself too!rock onsuccess with ELSAThank youThank you for opportunity of free participation via lottery.Thank you for the chance you are giving ELSA members, thank you!Thank you for the opportunity to attend to international events, it would be more than a pleasure and unforgetable experience to go to an International Summer Law School!thank you for your attention about our thougths and hopes.Thank you very much for your interest!thanks a lot! :)Thanks. The box where I had to select my University (LUISS in Italy) doesn't work at all! Check it!The Market Research is too long. The Market Research should have been conducted earlier in the semester because many norwegian law students are already on vacation or having examsThe prizes offered for the participation are not useful. Free participation in an event without free flight tickets is not economically attractive. An iPhone costs 400 EUR and if offered as a prize would attract more participants than a free law school. The questionnaire was ok and complete...it covered most of the topics regarded to ELSA and personal opportunities .The Questionnaire was way too long and there were most of the time to many answers to choose from. The topic is perfect! That's an opportunity for better studying!the way to succeed :)

There is also the University of Barcelona on Spain and several ELSA members in its LL.M programme. Please include it in the surveyThere was only one of Lublin's universities in questionnaire (JP2 Catholic University of Lublin) while the other one, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, is in fact, larger.there wasn't a possibility to indicate that one follows more than one program at university at once, so people specialising in more than one field academically (e.g. Law and international relations/ business/ management etc.) cannot tick more than one box in the specific question. Other than that I thought the questionnaire to be elaborate. This is great! :)This questionnaire is a great marketing step forward to get to know all expectations about the activities and opportunities offered by ELSA. I find it very useful and hope that results will help in developing ELSA life. Also it was a nice idea to offer an incentive or even a hope to get it. That will make the questionnaire more productive in answers. Thanks. This questionnaire is very interesting, questions about details, reasonable possibilites of answer, very well:)This test is too long, few people would do it to the end..This was a great questionnaire and you have done an amazing job!thx! To the point, well made questionnaire. Good job!too many questions, guys regarding to quite same things.too many questions, I can't recommend it to my studying-law friends even though I am a local ELSA board membertoo many questions.Too many questions.very good idea, finally market research is being done.very interestingVery interesting and relevant questions! Congrats!Very interesting questionnaire! Congratsvery interesting questionnaire!!good job:)Very interesting questionnaire. :)Very useful topic.
