2017 is going to be a big year for the Dayton Wingmasters, in case you have not heard the Fairgroundshas been sold so we are not sure how many more meetings we will be having at that venue. The really big item on this years agenda is to get the new lease signed for the flying field with the City ofDayton. I have been trying to keep the avenue of communication open with the powers to be, in hopesthat they will keep our lease and not give up the land to Metro Parks. Metro Parks has a big master planin place and one of the large items they want is to control all the land from Siebenthaler back to the gar-dens. If they get their wish I am not sure what the future will hold for the Dayton Wingmasters Flyingfield.

Above is a partial list of the 2017 schedule, if you would like to host a fun fly or special event please letme know ASAP because I am getting ready to fill out the applications for our 2017 planned events so theCity can put them on their calendar.

Meet the Member

Now to our Meet the Member focus of the month, everyone please Welcome our2017 Safety Director Fred “Andy” Anderson. Andy as known to all of us in the club, usually the secondary highlight at the field as he always accompanies Gus.

Andy is originally from the Massillon, Ohio area, cur-rently living in Waynesville. Andy retired from theUnited States Air Force after spending 18 yrs as aloadmaster on C-5 Galaxy aircraft. After retiringfrom the USAF, Andy then joined forces with DishNetwork as the Safety Director until his eventualretirement.

Andy’s entrance into the Hobby began as hisneighbor called him over to look at a vintage air-plane that the gentleman’s grandfather had built. The duo wanted to try to fly it around, not knowinghow to get it started, or how much room they need-ed to fly the machine. The pair started to tinker withthe engine, however they never could get it to fireup. Despite the setback with the neighbor’s fuelplane, this spurred an interest in Andy to get his first aircraft.

Andy’s interests in the hobby have blossomed into a love for Warbirds, specificallyVietnam Era aircrafts. Andy along with Jack Book were our 2016 Warbirds overDayton and EDF CD’s. Events that were enjoyed by all, which Andy wants to holdagain, at our field.

As for what part of the hobby Andy enjoys, well in his words, all of it, from building toflying to the social interaction as well as repairing, which is not a statement on hisflying abilities by the author. Andy has 4 children and 3 step children, and of coursehis favorite companion his Bichon Frise named “Gus”

Andy had been flying for six years, and looks forward to many years in the future. Ihope that this is a small snapshot into who Andy is, and should you come across An-dy at the field take the time to Meet the Member, and introduce yourself. Also makesure you ask Andy about his diving experience in the Air Force, it is a great story, which he can tell better than I!
