MDEhasarobustsummerinternshipprogram,whichtheGSIPwillparticipatein.Wehaveregular(oftenweekly)brownbagluncheswhereaguestspeakerwilldiscusstopicswiththestudentsuchastheclean-upplanfortheChesapeakeBay,leadpaintpoisoninginchildren,climatechange,andoysteraquacultureoperations.Additionallythestudentsaretakenonseveralfieldtripstoplacessuchasstate-of-the-artwastewatertreatmentplants,recyclingfacilities,powerplants,andonboatsforadayofwaterqualitytesting.

Specifically,theGSIPInternwillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateinthedevelopmentofastrategicplanthatwillultimatelybeusedbytheOfficeandthroughouttheStateofMarylandtoensureefficientandeffectiveuseofgrantfunding.TheGSIPInternwillalsoworkwiththeEasternandWesternDivisionChiefs,theResearchChief,andtheDirectorofSpecialProjectstogathertheperformancemeasureinformationfromtheGMSsothatitmaybeappliedthroughaperformancemanagementprocesstoensureefficiencyinitsoutcomemeasures.

TheGovernor’sOfficeofCrimeControl&Prevention(Office)administersnumerousfederalandstategrantprogramsandservesasaclearinghouseforinformation,research,analysis,andothermaterialsnecessaryforformulatingcrimecontrolandpreventionpolicy.TheOfficeassistsinthedevelopmentoflegislation,policies,programs,andbudgetsrelatingtothereductionandpreventionofcrime,violence,delinquency,andsubstanceabuse;thecoordinationofactivitiesamongrelevantstateandlocalagencies;theimprovementoftheadministrationofjustice;andotherpublicsafetyissues.TheOfficeisalsochargedwiththetasksofmoreeffectivelymanagingMaryland’scriminaljusticeresources,developingmorecollaborativeapproachestojuveniledelinquencyandcrimeissues,andprovidingforadeliberativeplanningprocessfortheuseofthoseresources.Tothisend,andinanefforttoensurecollaborativeapproachestoreducecrime,violence,delinquency,andsubstanceabuse,aswellastoidentifytherelationbetweengrantfundingandtheoutcomesassociatedwithsuchfunds,theOfficeinvitesaparticipantfromthe2016Governor’sSummerInternshipProgram(GSIP)toassistinthedevelopmentofastrategicplanwhichmaybeusedfortheentireStateofMaryland.Thisstrategicplanwillbeusedtogatherandexamineoutputinformation,retrievedfromtheOffice’sGrantsManagementSystem(GMS),soasto
