BLUF• BLUF: The Body of Christ (Messiah) and the Bride of Christ

(Messiah) *must* be two different things• Let’s explore…

Song of Solomon“The song of songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee. Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.”

Song of Solomon 1:1-4

Song of Solomon• What did we just read?

– We just read of a Shulamite bride revealing her desire to have an intimate relationship with her bridegroom

– It is a desire beyond friendship and fellowship– It is a desire to be with him in his chambers

Song of Solomon• The word chambers is translated from the Hebrew word

cheder (Strong’s H2315)• In the Jewish marriages of antiquity, the marriage took

place under the chuppah and the consummation took place in the cheder

• This desire for intimacy resulted in the union and consummation of the Shulammite with the King

Song of Solomon• If our desire to know (ginosko – Strong’s G1097 (properly,

to know, especially through personal experience (first-hand acquaintance)) osfei is as deep as the Shulamite, we too can experience a deep relationship with Him and find out for ourselves this love that “surpasses knowledge”

“And to know the love of Messiah, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”

Ephesians 3:19

Know“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from efei.”

Genesis 4:1

• The Hebrew word for “know” is yada (Strong’s H3045)

“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?”

Luke 1:34

Song of Solomon• The Song of Solomon is a book of poetry with multiple

levels of understanding– Some interpret it to be simply about a love affair between a shepherd boy/king

and his Shulamite bride– Others describe it as a how-to manual on biblical lovemaking– The Song of Solomon is a word of prophecy and the prophet Solomon is acting

out a prophetic charade with his bride and the daughters of Jerusalem

• Will you have ears to hear?

Her Beauty“Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair...”

Song of Solomon 4:1

• The Hebrew word for “fair” is Yaphah (Strong’s H3302), which means “beautiful,” implying internal as well as external beauty

• In this verse, Solomon is reaffirming His love for her growth and maturity

Her Beauty, Repeated• Repetition is not only for emphasis, but is known as “twice

speak” in Scripture

“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.”

Job 33:14-17

Her Beauty, Repeated• Messiah used “twice speak” also:

“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things.”

Luke 10:41-42

Her Beauty, Repeated• Messiah used “twice speak” also:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”

Matthew 23:37

Her Beauty, Repeated• In the Book of Revelation we see it:

“And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Revelation 14:8

Twice Speak, in Application

• An example of double application can be found in Song of Solomon 8:5 with the question, “Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness?”– This is referring to Mount Sinai and the forty years in the

wilderness– But it is also addressed in Revelation 12:6 and 12:14, when the

bride is taken into the wilderness for protection and then is seen coming out victoriously

Twice Speak, in Application

“And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.”

Revelation 12:6

“And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.”

Revelation 12:14

Twice Speak, in Application• Not only is the speaker in this case directing his

conversation to that particular person and situation, he is directing it toward the last-day saints– This is an indication that a particular event will play out twice– In this case, not only is Solomon speaking to his bride, the Shulamite, but as a

picture of the Bridegroom he is speaking to the Bride of Messiah for last-day instructions on what we should look like

• We must be careful to hear what the Spirit is saying

Gladdening the Bride• In the passage we just read, the scene opens with guests

gathered around the feast, in the marriage hall– Can you think of another part of Scripture that sounds just like

this?• Solomon begins to draw special attention to the

Shulamite’s physical beauty and characteristics he observes in her

Page 19: 1 Mastering “…the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” September 3, 2013 Facebook.com/ LTSMinistries

Gladdening the Bride• Similarly, in Judaism, gladdening the bride with praises of

her beauty and splendor on her wedding day was a Mitzvah (commandment) and still remains a religious obligation for many Jews to this day

• These are examples of the high praises the groom bestows upon his bride (and you can bet that Messiah will bestow the same upon His bride)

Gladdening the Bride

• Would you consider that “gladdening” a woman today?• Would you ladies consider this flattery?• How about this one?

“…thy hair [is] as a flock of goats, that appear from mount

Gilead.”

“Thy neck [is] like the tower of David built for an armory…”

Page 21: 1 Mastering “…the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” September 3, 2013 Facebook.com/ LTSMinistries

Gladdening the Bride• Believe it or not, Solomon is using common imagery of the day to

praise her– Not just with meaningless, empty words of flattery as you hear in today’s pop

music, but with well-chosen thought-out words that carry rich meaning• One author suggests, “To those who lived in Solomon’s time, the

rippling effect of a flock of goats moving down a hillside was, indeed, a thing of beauty.”

• As we will learn, such use of images and symbols do reflect, in fact, a thing of splendor for those who are members of Messiah’s bride

Osfei and Solomon• On several occasions osfei (Yeshua) mentioned Solomon,

as he was a type/shadow of Himself as King of Kings• We have to study this book carefully, as it can only pertain

to those in the last days, of what our Lord is desiring in us, and how we must reflect His character and be a holy, spotless bride for Him

• Be prepared!!

Eight Virtures• Solomon describes eight distinct virtues emerging in her life

and is projecting her new image in terms of what she will become

• Romans 4:17 says efei “calleth those things which be not as though they were,” even though it is not what she presently manifests

• She is, in reality, a mirror-image of him (the bridegroom), reflecting his character

Page 24: 1 Mastering “…the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” September 3, 2013 Facebook.com/ LTSMinistries

24Mastering “…the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”

Eight Virtures• The act of her “becoming the bride” is conditioned on her

attaining these eight characteristics—symbolic not only of new beginnings and eternal life, but also of an invitation to dwell in the Holy of Holies with Him

• As believers, we all have access to eternity in Heaven, but it will be the bride that dwells in His presence

Page 25: 1 Mastering “…the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” September 3, 2013 Facebook.com/ LTSMinistries

• We talked about:– Song of Solomon as an example of the Bride– the word “know”– her beauty, and her beauty repeated (twice speak)– gladdening the Bride– Yeshua and Solomon– eight Virtues of the Bride

FinallyThroughout history efei has pardoned sin by His grace based on Messiah’s work on the cross alone, not on man’s actions. Though we advocate obedience, obedience does not determine salvation. Our right standing before Him is established on one

thing only: the finished work of Messiah. We are released from our sins by His blood. He has reconciled us in His earthly body through His death. Osfei bore our sins in His

own Body on the cross so that by His wounds we are healed. We are made holy through the offering up of His body as a sacrifice. Messiah appeared once for all to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. efei sent His Son to remove the wrath that

we ourselves both created and deserve. The penalty of sin that is rightly ours is absolved by grace through faith, not by any righteous deeds of our own. Only when

we are born again, given a new life through God’s Spirit, by faith in Osfei Messiah can we be forgiven.

Will you accept Him?
