1The three Marian Shrines of Wisconsin – Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe – are privileged to make available to pilgrims during this Jubilee Year of Mercy the gift of encountering the mercy of God by means of entering the Holy Doors at each Shrine.Pilgrims through the years have come to shrines to seek the grace of forgiveness and to experience the mercy of God the Father, who is “rich in mercy” (Ephesians 2:4). We all need the mercy of God, for none of us is perfect. We should always accept the offer of salvation. The Holy Year of Mercy affords each of us the opportunity to advance in the journey of salvation and to be embraced by our heavenly Father’s love. The mercy of God comes through an open door, and the three Marian Shrines of Wisconsin encourage you to come and experience the mercy of your heavenly Father during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

A Year of Grace The biblical theme for the Year of Mercy is “be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36), a profoundly beautiful theme which sets the stage for a year of forgiveness, healing and reconciliation with our heavenly Father. Indeed, the year promises to be filled with special graces, as we seek God’s mercy for ourselves, particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and as we struggle to be more merciful to others.

In calling for a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites us to contemplate the love and mercy Jesus never fails to extend to us, despite our sins and weakness. At the same time, he exhorts us to be witnesses of mercy, that is, to imitate Christ in our practice of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy:

Holy Doors of Mercy in WisconsinIn response to Pope Francis’ request that the bishop of each diocese designate a “Holy Door of Mercy” at the diocesan cathedral and at officially approved shrines within the diocese, Holy Doors have been designated at each of the three approved

Marian Shrines in the state of Wisconsin: Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Our Lady of Good Help near Green Bay, and Mary Help of Christians in Hubertus.

Holy Doors represent Christ, who tells us, “I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved” (John 10:9). Before being opened, the Doors are sealed for a time to symbolize our separation from Christ due to sin. When the seal is broken and the Doors are opened, we are reminded to enter into Christ, and to hope in His mercy and love, despite our sins and failings. At the same time, we are reminded to open the doors of our hearts for Christ in return for His love, and to extend Christ-like mercy to others.

Pilgrimages during the Year of MercyPope Francis has encouraged Catholics to make pilgrimages during this Holy Year as an impetus to conversion. Entering one of the shrine churches (or any other officially-designated church) through its Holy Door of Mercy symbolizes in the pilgrim the desire for conversion and growth in holiness. Anyone who walks through these Doors of Mercy, says Pope Francis, will “experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.” As part of your year-long spiritual journey of reconciliation, healing and conversion, we invite you and your loved ones to cross the threshold of one or all of the Holy Doors established at the Marian Shrines which grace the state of Wisconsin.
