NC WISE Parent Assistant

A user-friendly web application to help parents track their children’s progress in school

Allows easy communication between parents and teachers. Allows parents to update their child’s personal information and family contacts.

Parent Assistant:

• Increased Home-School Communication• Real-time Student Progress Reporting

(Seven days a week, 24 hours a day)• Increased Parent Involvement• Language choices (English, French,

Spanish)

Types of Parent Accounts

•Parent User –Access to all children with 1 account•Parent living with the student radio button checked•Same address as student(s) in NC WISE•Views Demographic & Emergency Contact Information•May request changes to this data

Student User –Access to one child with one login•Use this access for Non-Primary parent•Does not have same address as student in NC WISE•Does not view Demographic & Emergency Contact Info

PA - Logging In

Passwords are case sensitive and do not expire

Business practices do not changeDocumentation required for Proof of Residency

No changes are made directly to eSIS data by making changes in Parent Assistant

Office Reason must be populated to see in Attendance Details

Teachers make individual assignments viewable in

PAM (Parent Assistant Module) by populating the

“Post to Parent Assistant Date” field

• Future dates will postpone viewing of Assignment Details, but not viewing changes to Current and Cumulative averages

• Failure of the teacher populating the date does not prevent parents from seeing changes to averages

• Teachers with Preference to “Count Blank Marks as Zeros” should enter all marks for an assignment or this preference will be applied

Teachers can communicate to the parents of an entire class…using

…or to the parent of a single student using the Mark Comment through Mark Entry

This view is similar to a Report Card

Why do we need Parent Assistant?

• To improve the effectiveness of the communication between teachers and parents

• To allow Technology a way to provide a more efficient means of communication

Parent Assistant:Teacher Considerations

•When and how frequently will teachers enter assessments and marks?

•Will all teachers count missing marks as 0 – Zero?

•If a teacher doesn’t enter marks for all students in an assessment, what will happen to the average for the students who have no mark entered?

•Will the teacher print a Progress Report for all students?

Parent Assistant:Teacher Considerations

•How often will High School teachers turn in absence notes so the absence reasons can be updated?

•How often will teachers update absence reasons in Elementary and Middle Schools?

Parent Assistant:Other Considerations

•Will Report Cards be printed for all students?

•How will this program impact Parent/Teacher conferences?

•Who will create, modify, delete parent accounts for Parent Assistant?

•Who will approve the demographic changes?

Parent AwarenessCurrent Plans:

•An AlertNow call will be sent to parents once the system is available

•The availability of the program will be publicized on the (Your LEA) Webpage, in the Superintendents Newspaper article, School Newsletters, etc…

Parent Awareness

Current Plans cont:

•Parents will be trained in a 30-45 minute session once Parent Assistant becomes available and they will be given their User IDs and Passwords at that time

Parent Assistant Timeline

•Target Date Spring of 2011 – May possibly be August 2011 because of security issues at ITS (Information Technology Services) in Raleigh

•High Schools will go online 1st

•Middle Schools will follow a week later

•Elementary Schools will follow the middle schools a week later
