ABSTRACTThe public and government more and more concern about water resource conservation and solid waste recycling due to the increasing awareness of socioeconomic problems created by the inappropriate use of these natural resources. Recycling activities must, therefore, go hand in hand with an evaluation of the effluents generated and discharged during such operations, in order to avoid a mere exchange of pollutants. The goal of this project was to gain an understanding of the widespread use of plastic products, the issues concerning their disposal and the alternatives that exist. Mechanical properties of a variety of common plastic products and biodegradable alternatives were evaluated using tensile testing. Accelerated aging through intense heat was used to analyze the difference in mechanical properties before and after degradation under ambient conditions for equivalent times in two years. Companies are continuing to reduce production costs of alternative products, but currently the best solution is to promote awareness and prevent excessive use of polyethylene products. The findings of this project can serve as a starting point for potential changes in current product use and provide future material options. A typical physicalchemical treatment should be enough to comply with the requirements.
