Based on a Kellogg’s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit “stuck” trying to write something for “Sgt. Pepper.” Paul plays a

stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete.

Overdubs followed with John’s lead vocal and Paul’s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc.

(previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles’ 1964 and 1965 tours.

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour (EP)

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocals: Paul and John

When Paul McCartney was in the U.S. in early April 1967 he came up with the idea for a Beatles television film about a mystery tour on a bus. During the April 11 flight back home he began writing lyrics for the title song and sketching out some ideas for the film. Upon his arrival in London, Paul pitched his idea to Brian Epstein who happily

approved. Paul then met with John to go over the details and the two began work on the film’s title track. The title track was written primarily by Paul but was not finished

when McCartney brought the song in to be recorded on April 25, 1967. John helped with the missing pieces during the session.

Written by George Harrison on August 1, 1967 while vacationing in a rented house in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles. The story is essentially the same as the lyrics imply. On a foggy night in L.A., George sat at his rented house waiting for friends to

arrive, but the maze of thin and winding streets and the thick fog rolling in got the best of them and they became lost. George: “I’d rented a house in Los Angeles on – Blue Jay

Way, and I’d arrived there from England. I was waiting around for Derek and Joan Taylor who were then living in L.A. I was very tired after the flight and the time change and I stared writing, playing a little electric organ that was in the house. It had gotten

foggy and they couldn’t find the house for some time. The mood is slightly Indian.” Following the release of the song on the “Magical Mystery Tour” LP in America, the City of Los Angeles got so tired of having to replace stolen “Blue Jay Way” street signs that it

had the street name painted on walls along the street’s route. The backing track was recorded in one take on September 6, 1967.

The Beatles - Penny Lane - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ fourteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label.

Following the disastrous 1966 world tour the individual Beatles took control of their hectic schedule. They were no longer in a rush to do anything. In September 1966,

Brian Epstein informed EMI and Capitol that there would be no new Beatles album, and quite possibly no single, ready in time for the 1966 Christmas season. EMI quickly

assembled a 16-track greatest hits album (“A Collection Of Beatles Oldies”). In the U.S., Capitol did not release a hits compilation and instead waited impatiently for a new

single. The band reconvened in late November to begin work on their next LP. With no deadlines, they simply brought in new songs as they dreamt them up.

The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better - A Hard Day’s Night

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John

Following their triumphant visit to America The Beatles were thrust back to work. On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film. On this day they

recorded “You Can’t Do That” and began work on Paul’s “And I Love Her” and John’s “I Should Have Known Better.” In the film “I Should Have Known Better” was performed in

the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. Used as the flip side of the U.S. “A Hard Day’s Night” single. Paul’s “Things We Said Today” was the UK b-side. Recorded

Feb. 25-26, 1964. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - Things We Said Today - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: Paul Written in May 1964 on board a yacht called Happy Days during Paul McCartney's holiday in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher, plus Ringo Starr and his

future wife Maureen. Recorded in three takes on June 2, 1964. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul’s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted

from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the

released version. The b-side of the UK “A Hard Day’s Night” single. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life - Revolver

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul

Another Paul McCartney solo composition, Paul called this stand out track “an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret (wine).” Work

began on the song on April 7, 1966, and this early alternate version can be heard on the “Anthology 2” album. It was the second song recorded for the “Revolver” album. The

Beatles returned to the song the next day with an improved arrangement that included John and George on fuzz guitars. On May 18 they revisited the song again, devoting a

full 12-hour session to rework and complete the song. To give the song its Motown feel, five outside musicians were brought in to add brass and saxophones. An additional dual guitar overdub was added on June 17. “Got To Get You Into My Life” was the opening

song performed on the final Wings tour in 1979. On U.S. album:

things… So Ringo spilt to hang out w/ his buddy Peter Sellers….so see if you notice the difference in the “feel” of the drumming….

The Beatles - Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul

Written while in India, Paul’s “Back In The U.S.S.R.” is based on Chuck Berry’s 1959 hit “Back In The U.S.A.,” but was written to mimic the classic sound of the Beach Boys. Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love was on the Transcendental Meditation sojourn in

India with the Beatles in the spring of 1968 and as McCartney was working on his new song, Love suggested the lyrics about Ukraine and Moscow girls, similar to his lyrics in “California Girls.” Recording began on August 22, 1968, and it was during this session that Ringo Starr officially quit the band. His departure was blamed on a disagreement with Paul over his drumming. Ringo flew to the Mediterranean to spend time on actor Peter Sellers’ yacht. It was there that he wrote “Octopus’s Garden.” On September 3,

Ringo returned to the studio to find his drum kit smothered in flowers. Ringo: “I felt tired and discouraged … took a week’s holiday, and when I came back to work

everything was all right again.” But Ringo added, “Paul is the greatest bass guitar player in the world. But he is also very determined; he goes on and on to see if he can get his own way. While that may be a virtue, it did mean that musical disagreements inevitably

arose from time to time.” /

The Beatles - Dear Prudence - The Beatles (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: John Recorded at Trident Studios’ eight-track recording facilities on August 28, 29, and 30,

1968. Ringo Starr had quit the band temporarily and the three remaining Beatles moved forward with sessions for the new album. John Lennon’s “Dear Prudence” features Paul

McCartney on drums. The guitar picking which opens and runs through the song is supplied by John on his Epiphone Casino. The finger-picking style was taught to him by folk singer Donovan earlier in the year while they were in India. George Harrison plays his Gibson Les Paul guitar and overdubbed a distorted Fender Telecaster lead guitar

part. In addition to his drumming, Paul plays his Rickenbacker bass guitar, provides the piano track and a very short burst of flugelhorn. John wrote the song in Rishikesh, India, for Prudence Farrow, sister of the actress Mia Farrow, who had cordoned herself off in a hut to meditate for hours on end. Lennon’s song was a plea for her to take a break from

her excessive meditation and join the others on the trip.

The Beatles - Taxman - Revolver

(Harrison) Lead vocal: George

Completed in 11 takes on April 21, 1966. Written by George when he started realizing the majority of his money was going to the British government in the form of taxes.

George went to John Lennon for some help with the lyrics, and Lennon was especially pleased with his line “Now my advice for those who die: declare the pennies on your eyes.” Featuring a nice lead guitar solo by Paul on his Epiphone Casino. The ‘pennies’

lyrical reference derives from Greek mythology – it is the payment to Charon (the ferryman of the underworld) to ferry the deceased to their destination in the

underworld. To pay the ferryman, the deceased person's relatives place a coin on each eye of the deceased. The Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath mentioned in the song were real

people. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Edward Heath was head of the opposition party at the time the song was recorded. It is the first time a George Harrison

composition opens a British Beatles album. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - Money (That’s What I Want) – With The Beatles (Bradford-Gordy) Lead vocal: John

Originally recorded by Barrett Strong and released as a single on Motown’s Tamla and Anna labels in 1959 and 1960 respectively, peaking at #23 in 1960. It was a part of The

Beatles’ live repertoire from 1960 to 1964. On July 18, 1963, the group, with George Martin on piano, performed the song live in the studio -- vocals and all -- for six full

takes, the final take being deemed the best. Although The Beatles involvement with the recorded track lasted this one day, George Martin continued to add overdubs and tinker with his piano part until the song was completed to his satisfaction on September 30,

The Beatles - I Wanna Be Your Man – With The Beatles (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Ringo

When Ringo Starr rejected “Little Child,” the song John and Paul had written for him to sing on the band’s second album, they created a similar song, but one that would be

easier for Ringo to sing and more in his vocal range. “I Wanna Be Your Man” would be Ringo’s vocal contribution to the “With The Beatles” LP, and was often performed at Beatles concerts. The day before the song was to be recorded John and Paul were

walking along Charing Cross Road in London when passing in a taxi were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Paul McCartney: “They shouted from the taxi and we yelled, ‘Hey,

hey, give us a lift, give us a lift,’ and we bummed a lift off them. So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, ‘Hey we’re recording. Got any songs?’ And we said, ‘Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo’s song? You could do it as a single.’” John and Paul were invited to the Rolling Stones’ rehearsal to audition their

new, but still unfinished song. There Lennon told them, “If you guys really like the main

part of the song, we’ll finish it for you right now,” and within minutes, they returned with the song finished on the spot. The Rolling Stones recorded the song and it became their first big British hit, peaking at number 12. The Beatles recorded their version of “I Wanna Be Your Man” the next day, September 11, 1963. Lead vocal: Paul Paul heard that in America “traffic wardens” were called “meter maids,” which he

thought was humorous and decided to see what he could rhyme with it. Written entirely by Paul McCartney and recorded on February 23, 1967. The basic rhythm track was completed in eight takes. Take 8 was deemed the best and it was mixed down to a

single track and the Beatles added overdubs to create the finished recording. Specifically, Paul’s bass on Feb. 23, Paul’s lead vocal on Feb. 24, John, Paul and

George’s backing vocals on March 7, and George Martin was elected to fill the song’s middle eight with a piano solo, recorded on March 21.

“Helen Wheels” was the name of Paul’s land rover – a play on “Hell On Wheels.” Recorded in Lagos with Paul on lead guitar, bass and drums. Linda is on

The Beatles - One After 909 - Let It Be (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: John and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, “One After 909” had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in

1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single (“From Me To You” and “Thank You Girl”), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to “One After 909”

they also brought in “What Goes On,” but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so “One After 909” got the go-ahead. Six years later the

group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 “Playboy” interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for “Let It Be” because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu

line from “Danny Boy.” The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the “Anthology 1” album.

The Beatles - Two Of Us - Let It Be (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocals: Paul and John A Paul McCartney solo composition originally entitled “On Our Way Home.” Thought by many to be a song about John and Paul, "Two of Us" is actually a song written by Paul

about himself and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Eastman. The lyrics are derived from various experiences where the two would get in the car with Paul's dog, Martha, and just drive in the countryside until they were lost. One particular day, Linda parked the car and went for a walk with her camera and Paul sat in the car and wrote the basic tune for the song. Paul introduced the song to the other Beatles during the January

1969 sessions in which the group was working up seven or eight new songs to include in a one-hour concert television special. At this time, “On Our Way Home” was not the

Everly Brothers-styled acoustic version heard on the released album.

Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his “first real major piece of work.” Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- “Eleanor Rigby” and “In My Life.” Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John’s Mellotron. The gorgeous

piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at

regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. On U.S. album:

Recorded primarily on October 6, 1964. It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. “Eight Days A Week” is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: “I was being driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We’ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week.” In later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original

working title for the film “Help!” The actual working title of “Help!” was “Eight Arms To Hold You.” On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private

plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping

Lead vocal: John Recorded February 17, 1967. The lyric of “Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!” was

derived almost entirely from a vintage poster purchased by John Lennon at an antique store in Sevenoaks, Kent, on January 31, 1967, while the Beatles were there filming the promotional clip for “Strawberry Fields Forever.” The poster advertised the February 14,

1843 performance of Pablo Fanque’s Circus Royal at Town-Meadows, Rochdale, Lancashire, and was hung proudly on the living room wall of Lennon’s Weybridge house.

Paul: “We pretty much took it down word for word and then just made up some little bits and pieces to glue it together.” The backing track consisted of John on guide vocal, Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, George Harrison on tambourine, and George Martin on harmonium. Paul McCartney’s masterpiece. The 7 minute, 11 second track was the longest released by the Beatles up until that time, and the song broke wide open the usual two to three minute mold that had long been the standard for pop singles. Paul got the idea for the song while driving to visit Cynthia and Julian Lennon. He wrote the lyrics as a message of encouragement to young Julian while his parents were in the throes of a very public separation. Paul wanted to stay friends, so he planned a visit. Cynthia was still living in

John’s Kenwood estate, and since Paul usually wrote songs on the way there to collaborate with his writing partner, he fell into the same routine. Paul: “I started with the idea ‘Hey Jules,’ which was Julian, don’t make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing. I knew it was not going to be easy for him. I always feel sorry for kids in divorce. The adults may be fine but the kids … I had the idea by the time I got there. I changed it to ‘Jude’ because I thought that sounded a

bit better.”
