You may use your notes to help you.
Prepositions
Definition: Words that show the relationship of a noun to
some other word in a sentence.
Examples: at, underneath, by, above, of, beneath, down,
over.
Prepositional Phrase
Definition: A phrase that includes a preposition and the
object of the preposition.
Example: The man from Baltimore was giving a
speech.
Prepositional Phrase Example
• Rhodopis was an outsider in Egypt and the servant girls never let her forget it.
• In Egypt, Rhodopis was an outsider and the servant girls never let her forget it.
Prepositional Phrase Example
• Cinderella married the Prince with the help of her mother’s spirit.
• With the help of her mother’s spirit, Cinderella married the Prince.
Introductory Adjective Example
• Rhodopis, who was blonde and had blue eyes, stuck out among the Egyptians.
• Blonde and blue eyed, Rhodopis stuck out among the Egyptians.
Introductory Adjective Example
• Because Oochigeasw was scarred, she was laughed at when she went to find Strong Wind.
• Scarred, Oochigeaskw was laughed at when she went to find Strong Wind.
Your Turn…
• Look through your rough draft to find sentences that already have a prepositional phrase or an adjective.
• Try rearranging the sentence. Ask yourself, “Does the new sentence make sense?”
