Mission StatementThe King’s Academy exists to assist the home and church in their endeavor to “train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Its mission is to share salvation through Jesus Christ and to graduate Christian leaders who seek to impact their world for the King of kings through academic excellence and spiritual vitality.

COVER PHOTOSince 1999, The King’s Academy has cared for children around the world by partnering with Samaritan’s Purse’s shoebox ministry, Operation Christmas Child. Last year, King’s students shared the Good News of our Savior’s birth by donating more than 600 gift boxes to this effort. Pictured: TKA junior kindergartner Taylen Bostic.

A LETTER FROM TKA’S PRESIDENT

3THE KING’S ACADEMY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear TKA Family,

TKA Cares! As we review the 2017-2018 school year, it’s clear that God’s Kingdom is advancing locally and globally through the ministry of The King’s Academy.

Last year, with a fantastic group of King’s faculty and staff, I had the privilege of escorting the Class of 2018 through five countries comprising the British Isles and of joining TKA’s International Studies Program in three cities across China.

One of my favorite memories of the senior trip was an outdoor Sunday morning devotional with our students led by TKA Director of Student Ministries Stephen Kimpel. At the bottom of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, within walking distance of beautiful yet spiritually-dead Scottish cathedrals, God’s Word was alive and proclaimed.

In China, I was told that students often choose King’s because it is a Christian school and Chinese families know that Christian teachers are more caring and nurturing. The love of Christ is alive at TKA, and students know us by our love.

Last year, prior to the current political unrest, TKA students served in Nicaragua by building homes, feeding the hungry, donating school uniforms, and loving children. They were the hands and feet of Christ to the poorest of the poor. They were hope in an otherwise hopeless situation.

Currently, plans are underway for next year’s first-ever senior trip to Iceland—a country where naturalism and new age mysticism now exceed the former influence of Christianity. The largest Christian church in the country has only 200 members, but as we travel to this beautiful land, King’s Class of 2019 will be a witness for Christ.

For almost 50 years, God has called us to be counter-cultural at TKA—to be His light to the lost. And, that is exactly what we are doing and will continue to do. God’s redemptive plan for a hurting world must be on display at The King’s Academy and wherever we go.

Thank-you for loving God, serving one another, caring for others, and helping 60 acres of good soil at the corner of Belvedere and Sansbury to produce a global harvest. As you read this report, please join me in praising our King, the One who makes this excellence possible!

Sincerely,

Randal L. MartinPresident

25THE KING’S ACADEMY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

TKA’s newly implemented strategic plan — The Future is Now — is less than one year old, but our school has made significant strides in putting the plan into action. Here are some highlights:

Instilling Faith: The King’s Academy welcomed Bible teacher and apologetics expert Dan Stuart, improved chapels and witnessed the growth of the student-led ONE80 Bible study. Effective training for our teachers featured the Three Circles, How to Lead a Child to Christ, and Classroom Apologetics. King’s celebrated many salvations and rededication decisions by students. TKA introduced the opportunity for students to pursue a special diploma distinction in the field of Christian Ministry.

Influencing Culture: The King’s Academy hosted influential speakers, such as U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and President of the Palm Beach County Bar Association, Rosalyn Sia Baker-Barnes, Esq.; energizing and inspiring our students with their messages.

Impacting Learning: The King’s Academy Explore Program expanded to include more students. Its new innovation lab, developed by a group of sixth graders, promises to benefit the entire elementary school by creating a love for engineering. TKA also experienced improvement in TerraNova and Advanced Placement results. In 2018-2019, students will experience improved transitions from 6th to 7th grades and from TKAP to TKA. A number of our teachers are pursuing advanced degrees, 20 elementary teachers achieved gifted certification, and TKA strengthened its faculty with more outstanding hires.

Inspiring Innovation: From hosting its first National History Day to implementing IT and maintenance ticketing systems, The King’s Academy is continually improving. Some technology improvements included additional laptops in the elementary school. Additionally, the opportunity for students to earn a special distinction on their diploma in the field of computer science was added. Coursework includes computer programming, web design, and AP computer principles.

Initiating Growth: The Boswell Science & Technology Center, completed in 2018, will attract students to King’s who aspire to cure diseases, solve engineering problems, and provide technological solutions thus allowing needed opportunities to discover God-given passions rooted in STEM pursuits. The Boswell Center has 12,000 sq ft of educational space including the 1,300 sq ft Smith Family Chemistry/Physics Lab, a 1,000 sq ft Rodila Family Life Sciences Lab, two additional 1,000 sq ft Life Sciences Labs, 1,500 sq ft programming/robotics Lab, 800 sq ft engineering lab, two STEM Classrooms, and four offices for TKA’s International Student Program.

CALLED TO CAREKing’s Students Exemplify Their Faith Through Service

Faith calls upon us to serve others, in ways large and small. Hebrews 6:10 says, “God is not unjust; He will

not forget your work and the love you have shown Him, as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” Our prayers for a better world were put into action as King’s students used their talents to help others.

A spirit of service must first be embraced before it can be shared. Beginning within, more than 75 King’s students made first-time decisions to follow Christ, and hundreds rededicated their lives to Him during the 2017-18 school year. Our students then proceeded to demonstrate just how much they cared.

The King’s Academy outreaches—including a home-building mission trip to Nicaragua, Operation Christmas Child, Key Club’s food drive, Jump Rope for the Heart, Angel Tree Football Camp, and Urban Youth Impact’s Christmas Store volunteers—raised tens of thousands of dollars and helped hundreds of families over the course of the school year.

Through these programs students were not only able to see how their faith could transform lives, but experienced how they too were changed. Many expressed feelings of gratitude, humility, and empathy, which truly embodies the teachings of our King.

TKA student Genesis Gutierrez ’19 (2 year Hope Project International volunteer): “When we were in Nicaragua, I got to talk with a lady inside of the house that we built. Because I spoke Spanish, I was able to talk to her on a personal level. She explained her situation and said that we had a special place in her heart. She explained to me that she only got a small amount of food each day, and it would be divided amongst her kids and mother who was very sick. Her husband had left her, and before we built the home she lived under a tarp. It made me think about my family in Cuba who are also in a difficult situation. The experience was heart-wrenching but made me realize that we could help. In a way, I think the project benefited us as much as it did them.”

TKA student Connor Marschall ’20 (2 year Hope Project International volunteer):“The part that I enjoyed most was the fact that we were there to help families have a home, and they were also involved in the building process. We were there to help them, but they helped us. I think I gained humility through the trip. We are so blessed. We have food, internet, and homes, but all they had was a trash dump to dig through. In Cristo Rey, we built a home for a family that had previously lived in a plastic garbage house. It was really eye-opening. Because of the trip, I find myself being aware that I am often not thankful enough for what I have.”

TKACares

Page 27: 1 PRESIDENTS REPORT - The King's Academy€¦ · THE KING’S ACADEMY 7 PRESIDENT’S REPORT 17 TKA’s Sarah Collins ’14 becomes Stetson’s all-time leading goal scorer, scoring

Hope Project International enabled King’s students to save lives in Cristo Rey (translated “Christ the King”), Nicaragua. For five days, four groups of students built eight 12’ x 12’ homes, complete with concrete-slab foundations, doors and metal rooftops. The structures, which can house up to 45 people, are simple, but keep animals, the elements, and dirt-born bacteria from endangering babies and children—reducing infant mortality rate by 50 percent. Additionally, King’s students donated cribs and beds that kept the children from sleeping on the floor—another simple lifestyle change that would lengthen the lifespan of young children.

Because this was the second year King’s students served in Nicaragua, returning students were able to prepare and guide new students. “It was cool to see students grabbing other students and leading them through the process of serving,” said Stephen Kimpel, TKA Director of Student Ministries, who was among the chaperones.

“During the trip, there was an awakening about meeting needs as a community, an awakening to what God wants to do through us and for us. When you go to places like that and you are open to brokenness, the impact when you return is that you are able to see the brokenness all around us. If you are willing to be exposed to brokenness, God can do really powerful things through you.”

28THE KING’S ACADEMY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The King’s Academy is a place of rigorous learning, where students discover their passions, pursue

their curiosities, and glorify Christ by exploring His world. Proverbs 18:15 tells us, “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.”

In 2018, our graduating class placed The King’s Academy among the nation’s academic elite by:

- Earning a 91 percent Advanced Placement Passing Rate – Five years ago, an estimated 50 percent of our graduates earned this distinction illustrating impressive academic growth.

- Being awarded more than $9.1 million in scholarships – Scholarships ranged from National Merit Commendations and Florida Bright Futures to Pathfinder and academic and athletic awards.

- Achieving 100 percent college acceptance by all 142 seniors – The King’s Academy will be proudly represented on campuses across the country.

Looking forward, our next graduating class is also excelling. Among TKA’s class of 2019, six of our 137 students earned more than 1500 on the SAT college entrance exam; 15 King’s students earned more than

1400; and more than 50 percent of the class scored higher than 1300. The 2017 national average for SAT scores is 1060, and the 2017 Florida average is 1017. On the ACT, King’s students also outpaced the national average, earning an average score of 25. The ACT national average score in 2017 was 21; and was 19.8 in Florida.

We are extremely excited about our newest academic enhancement—the Boswell Science & Technology Center that opened its doors for the 2018-2019 school year. Housed within the Boswell Center, our STEM program was recently recognized by Project Lead the Way as a distinguished program that is reserved for only 133 schools nationwide.

Our current achievement compels us to prepare for the future. Because the bar is always being raised, The King’s Academy’s first-ever academic endowment—a $1.25 million endowment gift and $1 million matching incentive for King’s Pre-Law Studies program is key to future success. We thank our generous supporters for investing in the endowment and in a legacy of academic excellence. To learn more about the matching program please contact our Development Office.

GIFT OF EDUCATION

Embedded within The King’s Academy’s mission is providing all children with an opportunity to learn. During our Hope Project International outreach, students delivered needed uniforms to Nicaraguan children, which allowed them to attend school. Generous supporters of The King’s Academy make it possible for foster children from Place of Hope to benefit from a King’s education.

KEY CLUB

TKA’s Key Club members learned leadership skills while helping others. The effectiveness of the Annual Food Drive was improved by 175 Key Club members, collecting 6,790 items, which surpassed the previous year’s collection by more than 2,000 items. Key Club sponsor Heidi Martin credited members with working hard to meet their goals. “Key Club members gave more than 4,500 community service hours during the school year through their various projects,” she said.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

At minimum wage rates, King’s graduating seniors donated more than $250,000 in community service to Palm Beach County residents and organizations providing more than 33,000 hours of time to help those in need.

30THE KING’S ACADEMY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

To meet the needs of a growing student body, The King’s Academy campus has recently expanded. II

Corinthians 9:8 reminds us of the source of our growth. “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” Prayers for successful, strategic expansion to allow TKA to impact more students and families with our mission have been answered while plans for future development are coming to fruition.

In 2017-2018, The King’s Academy saw notable campus growth with the dedication of the Page Family Center for Performing Arts, a 23,000-square-foot performing arts center featuring an 800-seat theatre. More than 400 donors contributed to the school’s Dedicated to Excellence Campaign, which provided funding for the $9.5 million facility. Special gratitude goes to lead donors Dave, Tuny, & Charlotte Page, after whom the theatre is named, as well as, significant gifts from the Esther B. O’Keeffe Charitable Foundation (lobby), Chuck and Ellen Hobbs (stage), John and Holly Boswell, and Family Church for their

commitment to making the Page Center a reality. And right on time, the Boswell Science & Technology Center opened its doors to welcome our 2018-2019 students. The two-story, eight-classroom STEM building was filled with smiles and laughter during its August 13th ribbon-cutting as students and teachers alike marveled at the potential of it all. Imaginations ran wild with the discoveries that would soon take place there! John and Holly (Loveland ’95) Boswell, Jan Smith, and Mr. Raul and Dr. Jill Rodila have left an indelible mark upon The King’s Academy and its scientific minds with their generous gifts, which made the Boswell Center possible.

Over the past two years, The King’s Academy’s campuses have also been blessed with six additional classrooms, a new preschool opening, TKA Lions’ new Athletic Performance Training Center and film study room, renovated common areas, and new baseball field bleachers. Additionally, our new athletic pavilion is currently under construction.

ANGEL TREE FOOTBALLCampus additions and renovations allow The King’s Academy to extend a larger helping hand to our community. Organizations, non-profits, churches, and neighbors utilize The King’s Academy’s campus throughout the year. During the summer, it is common to see football players practicing on TKA’s sports fields with football coaches. What you may not know is that some of the players that participate are part of Angel Tree Ministries, a program for children of incarcerated parents.

BALL AT THE KTKA also opens the Loveland Athletic Center on Sunday nights to students throughout our community. During half-time, Family Church staff and King’s faculty and students share the Gospel. Last year, more than 35 people who participated in the open basketball program accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior as a result of this outreach.

Demonstrating care in and out of competition is important at The King’s Academy. Our student-

athletes show care as they support one another through teamwork, show respect for their opponents, work hard, and play fairly. They show gratitude to the Lord for their successes and abilities. I Corinthians 9:24-25 tells us, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes ... goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

The King’s Academy made significant accomplishments during the 2017-2018 season. Highlights of 682 athletic contests included 16 team championships and a .619 varsity winning percentage. The Lions’ football team boasted a 24-game winning streak earning a second consecutive SFC Conference Championship—with its win over previously unbeaten Key West broadcast nationally as the High School Game of the Week. The Lady Lions competitive cheerleading team earned the title of National Grand Champion at the FCC National Championships beating all teams in all divisions.

The King’s Academy Girls’ volleyball team rose to prominence and became district champions following an undefeated regular season. Madeline Furtado ’18

recorded more than 2,000 career kills and was named the Palm Beach County Sports Commissions’ Female High School Athlete of the Year. Madeline broke new ground with this honor as the first Lions’ student-athlete to ever received this award. Other accomplishments included: - Track & Field swept district and regional

championships for the first time in school history - Boys’ Golf, Boys’ Cross Country, and Girls’ Cross-

Country teams each claimed district championships - Boys’ Lacrosse won 16 straight games, finished

the year with a 17-2 record and was ranked #15 in Florida by MaxPreps

- Girls’ Softball posted a 17-7 record and finished the year ranked #9 in FHSAA 4A classification

- Boys’ Basketball posted a winning record for the first time in five years and won a district play-off game for the first time in more than a decade

- Calvin Johnson became the 10th member of Lions Boys’ Basketball 1,000-point club

The King’s Academy is grateful for our talented coaches, trainers, assistants and volunteers who work tirelessly to prepare our student athletes. Six Varsity Coaches were recognized as “Coach of the Year” seven different times. Without the caring teamwork inherent in our school’s culture, this level of success would not be possible.

Small gestures matter. Whether moving furniture to help people shop at a Habitat for Humanity’s retail store or laying a wreath on the final resting place of a veteran, The King’s Academy cheerleaders made a big difference through small, yet meaningful actions. Coaches Jenn Allen and Christina Reickel coordinated the volunteer efforts of the Varsity and JV football and basketball cheerleaders.

The cheerleaders volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity retail location. They organized and cleaned the store allowing shoppers to purchase items and helping the store raise support for the nonprofit organization. “It was extremely helpful and humbling for the girls to serve and to learn about the purpose of Habitat for Humanity,” said Coach Reickel.

Coach Jenn Allen continued her tradition of connecting King’s cheerleaders to the sacrifices made by our country’s veterans including her father Paul Dunnell and founder of The King’s Academy M. Nelson Loveland. Each year, Coach Allen involves the cheerleaders in “Wreaths Across America,” a nonprofit organization that ensures wreaths are placed on headstones in 1,400 national cemeteries. Since her father passed in 2011, Coach Allen has coordinated the effort, which takes place in December. “It’s a wonderful way to keep the veterans’ memories alive and an impactful way for our cheerleaders to see where our freedoms originated,” she said.

Psalm 98:4 implores, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and

sing praise.” In response, The King’s Academy offers a comprehensive arts education to its preschool through high school students. Students perform in Broadway-style musicals, His People and His Voice choirs, The King’s regiment, jazz and concert bands, percussion, strings, dance ensembles, visual arts, broadcasting, film, digital arts, and stagecraft. Students can also earn diploma distinctions in theatre, instrumental, vocal, dance, visual, digital arts, as well as in journalism and print media.

When the curtains rise on a performance given by King’s students, the audience knows they are in for a special experience. In 2017-2018, our Conservatory Arts Program was recognized at the local, state, and national levels for professionalism and artistry. We were thrilled when The King’s Academy Theatre Company received National Top 5 honors for a second time from the American High School Theatre Festival—winning the award for its productions of Les Misérables and Funny Girl.

Ghost the Musical also won acclaim from the Kravis Center’s Dream Awards in the Best Actor (Clayton Hider ’19) and Best Actress (Olivia Henley ’21) categories. Sophomore Casey Butler won Best Performance by an Actor at the Regional Dream Awards. Casey then represented TKA at the 2018 National High School Musical Theatre Awards (“Jimmy Awards”), presented by the Broadway League Foundation in New York City. Casey was one of only 80 students selected to compete at the national level at the Jimmy Awards, which was broadcast on June 25 from the Minskoff Theatre.

To inspire students The King’s Academy also sponsored a trip to New York City for more than 100 of its Conservatory of the Arts students enrolled in musical theatre, dance, visual art, band, and broadcasting. For five days in February, students from each discipline honored their craft in the presence of professionals and legends. The trip culminated with a sold-out performance of Broadway Classics with current Broadway musical stars at the famed Carnegie Hall.

CARING FOR THE FUTUREThe King’s Academy Introduces Gifts of a Lifetime

The 2019-2020 school year promises to be an exciting time as The King’s Academy celebrates

50 years of providing the best in Christian education. As we look to the future with great anticipation of all that the Lord will provide, it is important that we also look back and recognize the Lord’s provision through His people. It is because of the investment of so many that King’s sits on a beautiful 60-acre campus, provides challenging and engaging academics, award-winning fine arts, championship athletics, and impacts local, national, and international communities in ways we could have never imagined. TKA has truly been blessed. It has been a journey of time, location, growth, and most importantly, a journey of faith.

As The King’s Academy looks to the future, we remain rooted in our mission “to share salvation through Jesus

Christ and to graduate Christian leaders who seek to impact their world for the King of kings through academic excellence and spiritual vitality.” We are optimistic about how the Lord will bless our school during its 50th Anniversary. In the coming year, each member of our school family will be encouraged to invest in the future of The King’s Academy with a Gift of a Lifetime in recognition of this special anniversary. These sacrificial, unrestricted gifts will empower TKA to strategically plan for the future, ensuring King’s will continue to provide the best in Christian education for current and future generations. TKA will also provide opportunities for naming various campus locations. We encourage you to consider honoring, memorializing or recognizing someone who has made a difference in your life, your family’s life, or your children’s life through a naming opportunity.

Students have freely given of their time, talent, and resources to be a blessing to others; and a subtle shift is taking place at TKA. Students are asking what they can give rather than what they will receive. JUMP ROPE FOR HEARTElementary students demonstrated a positive attitude towards exercise, healthy eating and heart health while raising vital funds to fight heart disease. Students collected $13,909 to support research into the cause, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. FIRST CAREStudents participated in a spare change collection to support First Care Women’s Clinic and raised $4,129 for the Baby Bottle Boomerang Project that gives women a compassionate voice of hope when facing a crisis pregnancy and encourages them to choose life for their unborn children. GUATEMALAN ORPHANAGEElementary students donated more than 1,700 shoes and 700 uniforms to support the children and staff at two orphanages in Guatemala. These gifts allow students and staff to safely and confidently attend school. ACCESS LIFETKA partnered with the Access Life Expo to provide 500 gift bags to for individuals and families living with disabilities. Thirty students also volunteered at its Expo event that pairs volunteers with individuals with disabilities in recreational activities. URBAN YOUTH IMPACT CHRISTMAS STOREMore than 40 students volunteered with Urban Youth Impact to provide Christmas toys for inner city families at its Christmas Store. In all, TKA collected more than 500 toys to support the project.

The King’s Academy is constantly growing, building on the success of a 49-year history! From new programs and qualified faculty to buildings and student opportunities, TKA could not flourish as it does without the philanthropic support of

generous donors. Your financial support has a direct and immediate impact on all aspects of the school — academics, the arts, athletics, financial assistance, professional development, facilities, and campus life. During the 2017-2018 school year, Parents, Grandparents, Alumni, and Friends of The King’s Academy invested more than $3,130,000 to projects and programs at TKA. Thank you for your generosity!

TKA IN BRIEF 2017-2018

RE-ACCREDITATIONTo provide the best Christian education, The King’s Academy seeks accreditation and affiliation with state and national organizations that exemplify excellence. TKA is fully accredited by four separate endorsing agencies, and our recent re-accreditation earned high praise from members of the visiting teams. A comprehensive assessment by outside organizations gives affirmation to our entire school program. Every aspect of the school is thoroughly studied and documented, and then evaluated by the accreditation teams. The accreditation process examines areas, such as operations and finance, admissions, personnel, curriculum and instruction, educational program, student services, facilities, safety, school climate, philosophy of education, and strategic planning. During March 2018, school administrators from across the state commended our school in many areas as an exceptional program. The King’s Academy was recognized as having one of the strongest Christian education programs in the country. The Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (FACCS) applauded The King’s Academy for effective school improvement plans and strategic initiatives. Additionally, TKA was commended for placing great value on the growth of students’ spiritual health in addition to their scholastic endeavors and co-curricular activities.

QUALITY POINTS AND RANKINGStudents enrolled in rigorous courses are awarded additional quality points. These additional points are called “weighted” points. One full quality point is added to the Grade Point Average of students who take AP and DE classes. Honors courses receive an additional 0.5 quality point added to the GPA. The King’s Academy offers a balanced experience for every student. Our goal is to reach every child academically, spiritually, and socially. The King’s Academy program is comprehensive and rigorous. Our students have a long history of excellence in their academic pursuits, and we rank for purposes of selection of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. However, we do not feel the exceptional work of our students can best be demonstrated by a single statistical ranking. We do not believe that ranking students provides a valid measure of student achievement, and therefore we do not publish class rank as part of the college admission process.
