I was very much impressed in the way the artists ofthe Art Guild were able to bring out so manydifferent variations of the “Reflections” theme.

From the beautifully obvious photographic capture byThomas Ekkens’s “On Walden Pond” to thehauntingly introspective portraiture of Linda Salter’s

oil painting titled“Musing”, thisexhibit definitely hadit all and then some. I have just recentlybecome acquaintedwith Robert McClayand was quite excitedto see him enter thispiece in the exhibit.Robert’s acrylicpainting, titled“Venice Mask Shop”is a delightful take onan often clichédsubject, displayingDaniele Derenzi - Sunset and Waves

rich wonderful color and depth, but what impresses methe most in hispiece is thesimpleinclusion of thegreen windowsill and casingthat appearsthen disappearsout of framebringing uswhat I considera more realisticview from hiswork. I have togive Robert agreat big thankyou forbringing hisVenice to Pacifica. Daniele Derenzi steps out of her comfort zone witha mesmerizing acrylic puzzle piece titled Sunset andWaves, a work which is several years in the making,

finally finishedand nowthankfullyexhibited in thisshow. I was ableto get a sneakpreview ofDaniele’s pieceprior to the showand it immediatelybrought to mindone of M.C.Escher’s famousprints. I amamazed at theintricate

reflections (continued)interlocking shapesin contrast with thewarm colors andhow they all workso perfectlytogether. Every once in agreat while I comeacross aphotograph that Ican only look atand say to myself,“I wish I had takenthat.” DeborahMaufer’s digitalprint stirs up thosefeelings in mewhen I look at herimage aptly titled “Singular A”. This piece gives me afeeling of a warm art deco night saturated with a coolsatisfying breeze, a feeling that can only be found in ina certain area of Miami. Her work is a brilliantlycaptured reflection of blue and orange neon with analluring night lit window that leaves us wanting toknow more about the goings on inside. One of the simplest pieces shown in this exhibit isa pleasing pen and ink drawing by Rick Lucia titled“The Surveyor”. Rick has giving this delightfulcontour drawing a definite sense of persona and it begsto us to find out more about this subject and his title.Rick Lucia demonstrates to us once again that less ismore.

When you enter the West gallery and gaze downthe hallway, at the very end something will catch youreye that you will know immediately must be inspectedmuch closer. I am talking about Jana Nisbet’smarvelous metal sculpture titled “Infinite Leap”. Atfirst glance one might see a surfer bravely riding thelip of a great wave, but it could be as the titlesuggests, a figure perched precariously on edge, be ita wave or cliff side, preparing for that infinite leapinto destiny. There is another three dimensional piece, this onesubmitted byCynthiaRettig, mynew studio-mate, thatleaves mepondering theartistsmeaning andwanting toknow more.Simply titled“#2 Fromthe oil canseries” a crystal clear display box containing two oilcans, one white and one black, the white can spillingout a black gooey substance that echoes the blacknessof the other can. Such simple containers of color thathold a multitude of meanings.

One can only hope that we will remain luckyenough to have artists such as Jack Ogden,who has been called a painter’s painter, grace

the walls of the Sanchez Main Gallery with his work.Ogden’s exhibit consists of 16 new works, all dated2010 or 2011 and all either oil on canvas and wood.Ogden’s figurative style works so well in thisexhibition entailing a rogue’s gallery of gangsters,

dock workers,shadybusinessmen andcowboys. In hispainting titled “XBand”, Ogdenpresents us agroup portraitreminiscent of adifferent erawhere a bandconcert in the parkon a summer daywascommonplace, buthis figurative stylelends an slightlyominous feel to

the piece and I am amazed how is slight brush strokesstill give each character their own persona. This is achance to see a great artist and his work right here inPacifica. Ogden received his B.A. in 1960 and M.A. in1962 from California State University , Sacramento,where he also taught for many years and has sinceretired. His work is the permanent collections of the

Crocker Museumin Sacramento, theOakland Museumof California, theButler Museum,and New BritainMuseum, as wellas the Pilot HillCollection andCalifornia StateUniversity/StudentUnion inSacramento. Hehas been publishedtwenty-one timessince 1963 in suchpublications as Artin America (1971),Art Forum (1963–66), SanFrancisco Chronicle (1972), Artweek (1990, 1994),and Art of California (1992). He has had over seventysolo shows since 1958 and thirty-eight group showsfrom 1984 to 2004. Ogden has received numeroushonors and awards over his career. If you haven’t been able to get out and see thisexhibition, you need to mark your calendar and makesure you are able to attend. The Jack Ogden exhibitwill be on display in the Main Gallery until June 26th

Tangerine arts east gallery

Tangerine Arts is a group of Bay Area womenwho work together to share ideas, resources,

artwork and camaraderie. Thegroup started in 1999 andstarted exhibiting in 2000.Tangerine Arts includesPacifica Art Guild membersJennifer Alpaugh, AliceKelmon, Melinda Lightfoot,Kathy Miller, Nancy MonaRussell, Linda Salter, andSharron L. Walker. This exhibit titled California

Grown, features paintings,pastels, collage, ceramics,mosaics, prints, andphotography by eight membersof Tangerine Arts. In Jennifer Alpaugh’s oilon canvas titled “Night Watch”we are presented with amajestic display of nature’sbeautiful. In sharp contrast toJennifer’s work, Alice Kelmondelivers a mixed media piece enclosed in wire titled“Chaos Trapped. Nancy Mona Russell’s acrylic on

canvas titled “Basso” is afavorite with it’s brilliant colorcomposition. In Melinda Lightfoot’sminimalist pastel work titled“Toes (For Mike I), I enjoyedhow well she combines thesebasic colors and how well theywork on that field of blue. Kathy Miller submittedseveral ceramic pieces, but the

one titled “Bird” was myfavorite. A beautifullysymmetric pitcher in shadesof blue with thecharacteristics of a birdbrought out in her glazework. Linda Salter’sevocative portrait in pastelso rightly titled “Yesterday’sPoem” was one of myfavorites of her submissions.I loved the details of the gentleman’s beard and hair

and how she used thebackground color throughoutthe piece. I am so used to seeing SharronWalker’s photography that Iam especially pleased to beable to witness her monoprintsand watercolors in thisexhibition. In her monoprinttitled “Passway” I admire herbold use of color and the

striking composition of this piece. One of Tama Blough’s pieces, titled “Surfer” wasrightly chosen for this exhibition’s postcard. Thepiece is a superb digital photo manipulation with asurfer holding their board while gazing out to thesea. The colors in this work excellent together and itis all reflected in the wet sand. Announcements

As an artist, I know that I am always thinking ofways to show my art. One thing I do know isthat getting smaller versions of your art out

there works. People enjoy greeting cards, postcardsand matted prints or photographs; sometimes they areunable to afford the framed piece or painting hangingon the wall. This is when our gallery store enters in tothe scene; it allows the artist an opportunity to sell. Itis also great for artists who make jewelry and small

sculptures.

Two years ago at Open Walls, we decided to havea gift shop and last year we expanded that to the OpenWalls Gallery Store. Now, we have the Gallery Storeopen year round following our Art Guild membershows. They all proved to be successful.
