Existing Bridge Cross-Section - (Looking North)
• Built in 1963• 73’ wide x 193’ long• 4 simple spans• 12 steel girders• 2 lanes in each direction
• 2 - 10’ wide sidewalks
• Has two (2) watermains under the southbound sidewalk
• Carries multiple electrical and telephone conduits
Project Goal: Replace the deteriorated concrete deck with a new deck which will extend the useful life of the structure for 30+ years

Accelerated Bridge Deck Construction
Pre-Cast Deck Panel The accelerated bridge deck construction uses pre-cast deck
panels (cast off site) which are placed on the bridge over four
weekends during the summer, when traffic on the bridge is reduced.
One sidewalk will be open to pedestrians at all times.

Accelerated Bridge Deck Construction(Stage 1)

Work will include bearing replacement, substructure repairs, steel repairs and Verizon utility repairs as well as the installation of the East sidewalk panels.
The west sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians. All four (4) lanes will remain open to traffic. Temporary off-peak lane
closures.

Work will include replacement and installation of roadway deck panels in the Northbound direction.
The West sidewalk will remain open and traffic will be reduced to one lay in each direction during the two weekend closure periods. Lane reduction hours are from Friday 10 PM thru Monday 5 AM.
All four lanes of traffic will be open between weekend closures. Traffic Enforcement Agents will be present from 9 PM Friday thru 6 AM
Monday for the weekend closures.

Work will include replacement of the West sidewalk and water main. The east sidewalk will remain open during this stage. All four (4) lanes will remain open to traffic. Temporary off-peak lane

(daytime).

on 188th Street each weekend for 4 weekends
• One lane in each direction will be maintained during weekend closures
• Alternate routes will be in place with use of traffic enforcement agents to facilitate traffic flow
3 Months: Stage 6• Southbound sidewalk closure on 188th St.• Replace watermains beneath bridge
under Southbound sidewalk• Northbound sidewalk remains open• No reduction of traffic lanes during peak
hours. Temporary off-peak lane closures.
2 Months: Miscellaneous Work• Miscellaneous items – lighting, striping,
painting during off peak closures• Site restoration
TOTAL DURATION FOR DECK REPLACEMENT:
2 MONTHS
TOTAL DURATION OF 188TH STREET TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Accelerated Bridge Deck Construction Summary
• Total duration for roadway deck replacement: 2 months
• Total duration for 188th Street traffic impacts: 4 summer weekends
• Overall construction duration reduction of 6-7 months over conventional construction
• Lane closures on 4 summer weekends– Two lanes in each direction will be reduced to one lane in each
direction– Alternate routes will be in place with the use of traffic
enforcement agents to facilitate traffic control– Weekdays between weekend closures all lanes and sidewalks
will be opened
• 20% additional construction cost over conventional cost
• Minimum of one sidewalk on the bridge open at all times
