Why Feed Raw

Raw food provides three essential benefits that cooked pet food cannot compete with:

Enzymes are a catalyst for all processes in the body such as cell growth and breaking down nutrients during digestion. Enzymes are made of proteins and proteins are very easily affected by heat, pH and heavy metal ions. Most food enzymes are essentially destroyed under the conditions used to cook and process food, leaving foods devoid of enzyme activity. Enzymes are denatured when heat is applied.

Amino Acids form the proteins that in turn form muscle tissue and increase fat metabolism. There are two types of amino acids; essential amino acids and nonessential amino acids. Dogs and cats cannot make essential amino acids and so must obtain them from raw foods.

Intracellular Moisture also called cytosol, is the liquid found inside cells. Intracellular moisture is the most effective way for your pet’s digestive system to break down and process their food. Without the moisture from prey animal cells, the digestive system has to work extra hard to complete the digestive process. When cooked, plant and animal cells lose this natural moisture.

Benefits Of Feeding A Raw DietBrighter, Cleaner Teeth - Less chance of plaque buildup especially if combined with

Recreational Bones &Raw Meaty Bones.

Better Breath - Almost odorless, indicating a healthy start to the digestive process and cleaner teeth.

Healthy Skin - Indication the immune system is healthy. Healthy immune systems are not bothered by parasites.

Better Digestion - Naturally occurring probiotics and enzymatic activity keep your pet’s digestive system working properly.

Shiny Coat - Helps decrease shedding.

Less Stool - Dogs utilize more, eliminate less.

Optimal Body Weight - Easily obtained and maintained. Better muscle mass.

Healthier Joints -This is greatly attributed to the natural Essential Fatty Acids as well as the overall PH balance becoming normalized, reducing inflammation. Glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen are a natural component in raw meat.

NW Naturals Raw Diets contain no artificial ingredients, colors or fillers so it is normal for batches to vary in color, size and texture

A HEALTHY ADDITION TO YOUR DOGS DIET!

Northwest Naturals offers a great addition to your pet’s diet with the Fruit & Veggie Nuggets, providing all of the nutritional benefits of raw fruits and veggies in an easy-to-feed option! Each re-sealable bag contains 2lbs of nuggets. Each nugget is a chopped and formed formula of the highest quality fruits and vegetables available. Chopping the produce mimics a pre-digestion process for your pet, so they are easily digestible. Our nuggets are high in naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids. Fiber plays an essential role in digestive, heart, and skin health, and may improve blood sugar control, weight management, and more. High in Antioxidants, and fiber, our F&V Nuggets are the healthiest whole food addition to your pet’s diet.

NWN Fruit and Veggie Nuggets can be beneficial by adding them to your dogs current diet or in addition to a raw food diet. Broccoli is a plant of the cabbage family. It is high in vitamin C, calcium, and soluble fiber, and also contains multiple nutrients, making broccoli a "super food" to support health and wellness. Sweet Potato has superior fiber content. Sweet potatoes contain almost twice as much fiber as other types of potatoes, contributing close to 7 grams of fiber per serving. The high fiber content gives them a "slow burning" quality. This means their caloric energy is used more slowly and efficiently than a low-fiber carbohydrate. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin B6, vitamin A, and manganese. Carrots are a source of important vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids to help support the immune system and digestive system. They may also help support proper skin and eye health. Romaine Lettuce is high in vitamin C and beta-carotene content that provides many heart health benefits, including preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. The folic acid found in romaine lettuce helps keep blood vessels healthy and clear. The potassium helps lower high blood pressure, which can contribute to heart disease. Fiber also contributes to the heart health benefits of romaine lettuce, by removing bile salts, which requires cholesterol, thereby lowering high cholesterol as well. Tocopherols are a mixture of vitamin E isomers. When mixed with rosemary and citric acid, they provide a potent natural preservative, which also supplies a small amount of the benefits of dietary vitamin E. Apple is rich in Vitamin C as well as a host of other unique antioxidant and botanical compounds such as flavenoids. Apples provide soluble and insoluble fiber, some vitamin C, beta carotene, potassium and boron. Cranberries provide antioxidants and natural acidic properties that may support urinary tract health. Cranberries are rich in flavenoids. Blueberries are a source of powerful antioxidants that may help support health and vitality. Northwest Naturals is a bio-available, raw whole food alternative to supplements. The nuggets are easy and convenient to feed. There are no added fillers or binders, just finely chopped fruits and vegetables, so keep all unused portions frozen until needed.

The Benefits of a Raw, Freeze Dried Diet for Pets

Freeze dried pet food is still a small and relatively new part of the pet food market, yet it is part of the fastest growing category in the pet industry. More than ever, pet owners are aware that araw, whole-food based diets are a more nutritionally dense and natural way to feed their pet. Most pet owners choose to incorporate freeze dried foods into their pet’s diet to harness thebenefits of raw food while still retaining the easy-to-use philosophy of kibble. To understand the benefit of incorporating freeze dried raw into your pet’s diet, we should first review the benefits of feeding a raw diet, such as:

• Less shedding• Smaller, less odorous stool• Healthier teeth and gums, and better smelling breath• More efficient digestive system• Less likelihood of allergies• Easier to manage a healthy weight• Maintains proper hydration and lessens chance of dehydration

While raw frozen food is the best way to incorporate these benefits into a pet’s diet, it is not always the most convenient way to feed our pets. Enter freeze dried—a shelf-stable, dry, easy to use alternative, that offers nearly all of the above benefits of raw food. Freeze dried retains both amino acid and enzyme function, though it does not have the naturally occurring moisture that raw frozen food has. The moisture is removed through the freeze-drying process without using heat, so the end product is still raw.

Freeze dried is ideal for travel, supplemental feeding, healthy treat, or as a topper to a pet’s usual food. For those pets already on a raw frozen diet, freeze dried can replace raw frozen when traveling since it is the same formula that the pet is already accustomed to and is much easier to travel with. Simply add water to the freeze dried to ensure proper hydration. Another great benefit of freeze dried is that it offers a soft, easy to chew alternative to cooked canned foods for senior dogs or those who have dental problems. It can easily be crumbled to a smaller size and rehydrated, and it provides a highly digestible food alternative that will aid, rather than hinder, a sensitive digestive system. Freeze dried can also be used for supplemental feeding for pet owners who want to incorporate the benefits of raw without the hassle. The freeze dried can replace any amount of the food the pet is usually fed or can be fed as a complete meal a few times a week. Freeze dried can also be used as a topper on a pet’s usual food. It is highly palatable and can solve many refusal-to-eat problems and still incorporates many benefits of raw, albeit in a smaller way.

However you choose to incorporate freeze dried into your pet’s diet, you can be assured that you are providing a healthy boost of the benefits of raw that cannot be found in other foods.

Gradual transitioning is the most important element for a healthy and safe change from your pet’s current diet to a raw food diet. All dogs and cats are unique and transition can be different for each. We recommend transitioning over a 1 to 2 week period to help your pet’s digestive system properly adjust. Begin by mixing 25% of the raw diet with 75% of the current diet. Gradually increase over the next 2 weeks until you are feeding 100% raw. When transitioning to any new diet, there may be digestive issues such as loose stool and gas. These are typically minor and will go away, but each dog will vary in the amount of time it takes.Monitoring your pet’s stool is an effective way to monitor how your dog is doing with his/her new diet. After transitioning to a raw diet you will notice less stool and less stool odor. If the stool is loose or soft, introduce the raw food slower or reduce the amount of raw food. A digestive enzyme supplement can be added to help dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Feeding DirectionsKeep the product frozen until ready for use. Northwest Naturals Nuggets and Dinner Bars are manufactured for “Quick Thaw”. You only need to thaw the portion you are feeding. This makes it easier for those of us that have busy lives and forget to defrost the raw food ahead of time. Whether pouring the nuggets or snapping off the portion of the Dinner Bar you need to feed, take the product out of the freezer and place the diet in you pet’s bowl. In about 15 minutes the product is thawed and ready to serve.

19

Safe Handling: Keep raw foods frozen until ready to use. Raw food should be completely defrosted before feeding.Northwest Naturals quick thaw varieties (Nuggets & Dinner Bars) make it easy to pour or break portions into your pet’s bowl. This can be done without ever touching the product. The product will thaw in approximately 15 minutes and is ready to feed. Replace the remaining product in the freezer. We recommend feeding raw food in a stainless steel, glass or ceramic bowl.Wash all work surfaces, utensils, hands and food bowls with hot soapy water after handling raw meats andproducts. Keep raw meats separate from other foods.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing!

The benefits of a raw diet are evident whether feeding a 100% complete and balanced raw diet or supplementing your pet’s current diet with raw food to add nutritional enjoyment to your dog’s daily routine.

Not all lifestyles are created equal. If feeding 100% raw is not for you, consider feeding your pet some raw as an addition to their current diet. Raw diets contain a higher level of nutrition, including essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants which are naturally bio-available to your dog as building blocks to increase health and wellness. Nutrition derived from whole raw foods with no cooked or processed ingredients means nutritional elements are easily absorbed for better utilization. Better absorption also means less elimination. Use Northwest Naturals Raw Diets in place of canned food or as a naturally healthy supplement to your pet’s current diet.

20

Raw Poultry Bones as Meal ReplacementPoultry bones can be used as meal replacements for your pet for up to three meals a week. There is no exact formula for how much raw bone your dog should have instead of their regular meal, but you can estimate based on the size of your dog and the amount of food they usually receive. It will not be detrimental to your pet’s health to feed three meals a week that are not the exact usual amount of food. Simply replace one of your pet’s regular meals with an equal amount of poultry bone to incorporate many of the benefits of raw poultry!

Incorporating Raw FoodIf a 100% raw diet is not an option for you, your pet can still benefit greatly from incorporating at least some raw food into their diet. You can try feeding one raw meal a day, a few raw meals a week, or as much or as little as you are comfortable with! Any raw food incorporated into your pet’s diet will provide a nutritional boost to their every day diet.

Meet some of our happy and healthy NWN pets!

• High Pressure Processing systems employ pressures to inactivate many food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella,E. coli and Listeria, with no change in organoleptic properties or nutritional value.

• HPP works because uniform high pressure affects microbial cellular integrity and metabolism without affecting the covalent structures of food components responsible for nutrition (structural proteins, fibers, fats, enzymes etc.).

• Covalent bonds are not broken during HPP, and as a result, no free-radicals or chemical by-products are formed.• The duration of the pressurization phase (generally two to three minutes) determines the efficacy of pathogen

inactivation.• The HPP process does not affect the structural integrity of the film (BPA and Phthalate FREE) used, as the

pressure is simultaneously applied uniformly on the food and the package.• HPP does not inactivate the “good” bacteria.
