Why Feed Raw

Raw food provides three essential benefits that cooked pet food cannot compete with:

Enzymes are a catalyst for all processes in the body such as cell growth and breaking down nutrients during digestion. Enzymes are made of proteins and proteins are very easily affected by heat, pH and heavy metal ions. Most food enzymes are essentially destroyed under the conditions used to cook and process food, leaving foods devoid of enzyme activity. Enzymes are denatured when heat is applied.

Amino Acids form the proteins that in turn form muscle tissue and increase fat metabolism. There are two types of amino acids; essential amino acids and nonessential amino acids. Dogs and cats cannot make essential amino acids and so must obtain them from raw foods.

Intracellular Moisture also called cytosol, is the liquid found inside cells. Intracellular moisture is the most effective way for your pet’s digestive system to break down and process their food. Without the moisture from prey animal cells, the digestive system has to work extra hard to complete the digestive process. When cooked, plant and animal cells lose this natural moisture.

OUR RECIPES Cat FoodNorthwest Naturals also offers cat food recipes! Cats have different nutritional needs than dogs, so we believe in feeding cats a diet catered specifically to these unique needs. Cats require very little to no produce in their diets, so each of our cat recipes contain 98% meat (including muscle meat, organs, and ground bone) and only 2% supplements. Each recipe includes these supplements to ensure a complete and balanced meal for every feeding. Our Cat Nibbles come in convenient 2lb bags (Raw Frozen Complete and Balance Diets) and 4oz and 11oz convenient Freeze Dried Nibbles. Feeding instruction for our raw Frozen Recipes, simply pour out the appropriate amount of nibbles and thaw in the refrigerator. The opened bag will stay fresh up to 7 days in the refrigerator. NWN Fruit and Veggie Nuggets can be beneficial by adding them to your dogs current diet or in addition to a raw food diet. Broccoli is a plant of the cabbage family. It is high in vitamin C, calcium, and soluble fiber, and also contains multiple nutrients, making broccoli a "super food" to support health and wellness. Sweet Potato has superior fiber content. Sweet potatoes contain almost twice as much fiber as other types of potatoes, contributing close to 7 grams of fiber per serving. The high fiber content gives them a "slow burning" quality. This means their caloric energy is used more slowly and efficiently than a low-fiber carbohydrate. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin B6, vitamin A, and manganese. Carrots are a source of important vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids to help support the immune system and digestive system. They may also help support proper skin and eye health. Romaine Lettuce is high in vitamin C and beta-carotene content that provides many heart health benefits, including preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. Gradual transitioning is the most important element for a healthy and safe change from your pet’s current diet to a raw food diet. All dogs and cats are unique and transition can be different for each. We recommend transitioning over a 1 to 2 week period to help your pet’s digestive system properly adjust. Begin by mixing 25% of the raw diet with 75% of the current diet. Gradually increase over the next 2 weeks until you are feeding 100% raw.When transitioning to any new diet, there may be digestive issues such as loose stool and gas. These are typically minor and will go away, but each dog will vary in the amount of time it takes.Monitoring your pet’s stool is an effective way to monitor how your dog is doing with his/her new diet. Raw Poultry Bones as Meal ReplacementPoultry bones can be used as meal replacements for your pet for up to three meals a week. There is no exact formula for how much raw bone your dog should have instead of their regular meal, but you can estimate based on the size of your dog and the amount of food they usually receive. Apple is rich in vitamin C as well as a host of other unique antioxidant and botanical compounds such as flavonoids. Apples provide soluble and insoluble fiber, some vitamin C, beta carotene, potassium and boron.

Apple Cider Vinegar is made from apples. It is freshly pressed juice that also contains pulp, skins, stems and seeds. The minerals, enzymes and acids in apple cider vinegar are a good supplement for your pet's existing diet. Besides being a good source of easily absorbable potassium, apple cider vinegar aids digestion, inhibits the growth of unfriendly bacteria and helps maintain the proper acid/alkaline balance of the digestive tract.

Ascorbic Acid is also known as the nutrient vitamin C. Vitamin C is a highly effective antioxidant that helps maintain a healthy immune system, facilitates nutrient metabolism and may support wound repair. It contains the highest-known levels of the fat-blocker and anti-carcinogen, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Eggs are rich in protein and are of high nutritional value, with little fat. Defined as the nutritive portion of a whole egg, egg yolks are a source of fat soluble vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and yellow carotenoids. In baking and other food applications, egg yolks are used to help emulsify (or break down) fats.

Fish Oil is an excellent source of essential amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids to help balance the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids for a healthy skin and coat. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to modulate the body’s inflammatory responses, such as arthritis.

Flaxseed is the whole seed of the flax plant. Flaxseed is an outstanding source of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Together these fibers aid in digestion and help to prevent constipation. Flaxseed is also an excellent source of amino acids, 0mega-6, and more importantly omega-3, essential fatty acids. When in the proper ratio with omega-6 fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids regulate and control inflammatory reactions. The richest source of alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) is found in flaxseed.

Ground Beef Bone is an excellent source of minerals, essential fatty acids, proteins and enzymes. Bone contains calcium and phosphorus in the correct ratio and is the most bio-available source. Chondroitin is naturally found in the cartilage of joints where it directly impacts the compression or cushioning aspects of cartilage. Iron is an essential mineral found in all body cells. It is vitally important for red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. Our iron is specially bonded (proteinated) with amino acids to enhance absorption and assimilation. Once absorbed from the diet, iron is stored in the body and seldom lost. Manganese is a trace mineral critical for brain and nervous system function. Our manganese is specially bonded (proteinated) with amino acids to enhance absorption and assimilation. Northwest Naturals uses proteinated minerals in all of our diets. Proteinate in animal’s food are organic forms in animals food, forms of essential trace minerals such as copper, iron, manganese and zinc . The animals absorb, digest and use mineral proteinates better than inorganic minerals. This means that lower concentrations can be used in animal feeds. In addition, animals fed proteinated sources of essential trace minerals excrete lower amounts in their feces and so there is less environmental contamination. Mineral proteinates also offer health and welfare benefits in animal nutrition, two compounds which are used as a source of copper. The copper from copper proteinate is highly available while the copper from copper sulfate is less so. Trace minerals are found in all body tissues. It works in respiration, synthesis of hemoglobin and production of collagen. It is also an antioxidant and helps prevent oxidation of fatty acids.

Rabbit An excellent source of vitamins, minerals and trace elements: High in vitamins B3 and B12, phosphorus, potassium and selenium. Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin. Its main function is to stimulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. This important vitamin aids in the formation of normal bones and teeth. Research indicates that lycopene is helpful in reducing the risk of prostate, breast and endometrial cancers, as well as lung cancer. Sweet Potato has superior fiber content. Sweet potatoes contain almost twice as much fiber as other types of potatoes, contributing close to 7 grams of fiber per serving. The high fiber content gives them a "slow burning" quality. This means their caloric energy is used more slowly and efficiently than a low-fiber carbohydrate. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin B6, vitamin A, and manganese.
