1. Identify one food chain within the food web pictured.

A) Tomatoes > aphids > lady beetle > spider

B) Tomatoes > aphids > lacewings >spiders

2. What do the arrows mean in a food chain/web?

• Flow of energy

3. In the food web pictured, correctly label each organism as a producer, 1st level consumer, 2nd level consumer, 3rd

level consumer, or decomposer.

• Tomatoes = producer

• Aphids = 1st level consumer, Primary consumer

• Lacewings / lady beetles = 2nd level consumer, secondary consumer

• Spiders = 3rd level consumer, tertiary consumer

4. Draw/Write SNAKE in the food web where it would belong.

5. Draw arrows in the food web to represent the heat that is released as

the energy is transferred.

6. What would happen to the food web shown if this area stopped receiving

sunlight and rain?

• The grass would not to be able to do photosynthesis to produce it’s energy

• The animals would die off due to lack of food and water

7.How is a population different from a community?

• Population = group of animals of the same species in an habitat

• Community = group of different types of populations in an habitat

8. What would happen if there were no produces in an area?

• The consumers would starve to death

9. What would happen if there were no decomposers in an area?

• Lots of dead organisms would be laying around

• No new soil would be formed to the plants to get their nutrients from

10. What type of animal are you (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore)?

• Omnivore

• Your body is able to digest both meat and plants

Type of animal Source of food example

Herbivore Plants

Carnivore Wolf

Plants and animals

humans

Term Role example

Hunts/eats other organisms

lion

Prey Hunted as food

Producer Plants

Gets food from other organisms

Animals

Decomposer Gets food from dead organisms or the waste of organisms
