“I presumed Malaria to be an even more urgent issue, a truly life and death concern. I fully expected to find that whatever could be done to fight malaria

was already being done. Surely, I thought, the world community would not simply be standing by while millions of children were dying each year…but

when my colleague Amir Attaran and I began to run the numbers on the levels of donor assistance to fight malaria, we barely found any numbers.”

Our goals for fighting malaria are simple…Make people aware that malaria is probably the worst child killer ever, and it is getting worse.

We didn't realize how acute the malaria crisis in Africa was/is until recently when one of us saw Jeffrey Sachs being interviewed by Charlie Rose. We now realize we are not alone.

Less than 5% of the people we talked to about this project have any clue that a large number of children are dying from malaria.

"The Malaria epidemic is like loading up seven Boeing 747 airliners each day, then deliberately crashing them into Mt. Kilimanjaro."    Wenceslaus Kilama, Chairman, Malaria Foundation International, 2000.

“Unless better drugs arrive soon in their villages and towns, deaths from malaria will most likely double in coming years”…(Deaths from malaria are rising as older medicines fail by Claire Panosian Dunavan in DISCOVER August 2005)

Malaria need not be fatal.  If prevention fails, the illness can be treated. However, the most effective treatments include Artemisinin-containing combination therapies (ACTs) which – at prices of $1-$2 per dose - are ten times more expensive than traditional anti-malarials.

Children and Malaria – The ‘Quiet’ ProblemChildren and Malaria – The ‘Quiet’ Problem

It is estimated that one to three million children under the age of five die every year in Africa from malaria. That’s bad enough, but the effects of malaria are even worse because of the global direct and indirect effects of malaria – with close to 500 million cases worldwide. There are large socioeconomic ramifications for children, their families, and their communities. Millions of pregnant mothers are also particularly vulnerable to the disease.

There is little awareness that Malaria kills more children than AIDS and Cancer combined!

Children with Malaria Need a Voice!Children with Malaria Need a Voice!

There is no major organized malaria PR effort. There is no significant malaria lobby in Washington. There are minimal malaria education efforts in the United States. There are only a few limited charitable efforts focused exclusively on malaria.

These problems are exacerbated by the fact that there is minimal focus on proper and easily achievable goals to eradicate malaria.

Instead malaria is normally subsumed under the overall banner of world poverty and global health.

What is the MFI? What is the MFI?

Since 1992, the Malaria Foundation International (MFI) has led the fight against malaria as a true grass roots effort raising public

awareness and education about malaria.

“The MFI mission is to facilitate the development and implementation of solutions to the

health, economic and social problems caused by malaria.”

The MFI developed the 1st malaria website (malaria.org) in 1995 and the 1st major global media attention in 1997, and has

partnered with many individuals and groups who have since joined this cause.

The MFI is the first 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to malaria. The MFI has proven itself as an organization with a neutral, international, respected reputation for “taking a stand”,

“getting things done” and “being there for the long haul”.
