What problems will the proposal solve?

● Labeling and packaging errors represent over one-fifth of all errors voluntarily reported to the OPTN

● Wrong organ delivered or wrong organ/wrong recipient ● Switched kidney laterality ● Limited in-transit and package information

Use technology to reduce and solve these problems TransNet uses barcode scanning technology for labeling, packaging, and

tracking functions Application works with Android or iOS tablet (recently released) and

portable bar code printer Interacts with DonorNet Supplements current labeling system Use in OR to print on-demand labels and scan information on all organ

and materials for transport

What is the goal of the proposal?

TransNet voluntary OPO usage started March 2015

This proposal would make OPO usage mandatory

Would go into effect in June 2017

How does the proposal address the problem statement?

Barcoding, printing on-demand, and point of care processing are well established technologies/practices used to prevent errors in health care and other industries

TransNet is widely accepted and currently used by over half of OPOs 35 OPOs have attended training and 8 new OPOs are signed up for

2016 training 6,947 organs from 2,029 donors have been packaged using TransNet Cases were created for 72.4% of all deceased donors among current

users OPO use must be mandated for transplant hospitals and entire system

to reap benefits
