Chaplain’s Chat

Welcome to 2013 at Bishop Druitt College.

I trust you had a very enjoyable summer vacation with your sons and daughters. They have certainly returned full of energy and eager to get back into school.

This year, 180 new students joined the College, 94 in Primary and 86 in Secondary. These students come to us from many different parts of the Coffs Coast, and indeed from around the country. I offer a warm welcome to our new families and encourage them to become involved in the life of the College.

We also welcome Mr Robb Kitcher to the Secondary Mathematics faculty. He has much experience teaching Maths in NSW government high schools, as well as at international schools in Fiji and Qatar. Welcome back too, to Mrs Maretta Wood (long service leave) and Mrs Rebecca Day (maternity leave).

Thankfully, our campus withstood the wild weather of last weekend. Our only real damage was to a shade sail in the Primary playground. This has been removed and another ordered. Many schools across the north coast and into south east QLD were either damaged or have had to remain closed this week, disrupting the learning of thousands of children. We have been very fortunate indeed.

Work on the Branson Centre has continued apace over the vacation. I toured the building yesterday. It is going to make a huge difference to our campus when it is in use. We expect to begin using the centre at the start of Term 2. Its official opening will be on Foundation Day in June.

It was a very successful vacation for some of our students. Congratulations to:

Careers news

Welcome to 2013!

We have many new students and families joining us this year and I warmly welcome them to the BDC Community. Please ensure that new students are well looked after and they have a wonderful start to their schooling with us.

Thank you to all families who have assisted us by fitting your children out correctly in the school uniform. Please consult the College website if you are unsure of any rules regarding the Uniform policy. Classes have also commenced in a very positive fashion and students are well underway with work and their learning.

Year 7 Camp will occur during Week 5 of term and details will come home via the students, so please look out for that in the bottom of a school bag! There will be a meet your teachers and camp information evening for Year 7 on Thursday 14 February commencing at 5pm.

Next Wednesday evening is Year 8 & 9 “Meet your House Tutor Evening”. I have sent all families of these year groups an email with the details and I encourage as many of you as pssible to attend. It will be held here at the College in the “Greenroom” on Wednesday 6 February commencing at 5pm. Tea and coffee will be available.

Welcome to another year for sport. We have many activities ranging from Beach Skills and Paddleboarding through to Rifle Shooting and Zumba. We not only use staff to run activities but also qualified instructors in the community. As always there are lots of things happening but always feel free to contact me if you have any concerns.

Monday Sport will begin this coming Monday and students have been reminded to check the sport they have chosen to make sure it is what they want. All students 8-10 made choices last year and Year 7 students and new students have chosen sports this week. If you know your son/daughter has not made a choice please remind them to see me to sort our their sport choices. A note detailing sport information was sent home last year and an electronic copy is available on the College website under, Community -> Sport -> Monday Sport Blog.

As always it is very hot during Term 1 so it will assist if you remind your son/daughter that a hat, suncream, and water are essential for sport. Students will not be allowed to change sports after Week 2, so if they wish to change sport they have till Wednesday Week 2, 6th February, to do so.

If your son/daughter cannot participate in sport due to an injury or illness please send a note with them detailing the issue. In most cases we will try and send students to sport where they may be able to participate at a modified level. Non-Sport is not to be used as a place to catch up on homework.

Any issues or concerns please contact me. Looking forward to sunny weather.

Congratulations to our 2012 HSC students. I wish each and every former student my best wishes with creating stability and sufficiency alongside peace and happiness with the new endeavours they choose to undertake.

TVET studentsClasses commence next week, Wednesday 6 February. Students enrolled in TVET subjects will be required to sign out of the College prior to their departure on Wednesdays at 12.50 pm and also carry their College Diary with them that should have the permission sticker with my signature on it. Private transport arrangements will have to be made. The College bears no responsibility for these arrangements.

Year 11 and 12For self-motivated, dedicated, high-achieving students in Years 11 and 12; if you would like to experience university study (distance) whilst still at school, the University Of Southern Queensland Head Start program is still accepting applications until February 12. Karin LisleAssistant Principal (Head of Primary)

From the head oF primaryWelcome back to all the families who have had a great holidays break, and a big welcome to all new parents and their children. It has been a bit of a wet start to the year but the children have come back with excitement and enthusiasm and I am enjoying getting to know all the ‘newbies.’

I would like to welcome two new staff members to the team: Jane Wilson, who will be teaching the ESL class three mornings a week, and Samantha Kloock, who is our latest Teacher-Intern. I am happy to say that all our teachers have returned to us with enthusiasm and excitement for the new year.

As our Talent Development and Creative Thinking groups will be underway shortly, I wanted to let you know the process if you are interested in your child being nominated for one of these groups. The Primary school will identify students from past performance and run small group extension and enrichment activities with the Talent Development teacher, Patrick Galvin, for Years 3-6 students. This program will focus on Mathematics and English and will use a combination of individual and group work with students. A Primary Creative Thinkers’ Group will also be established for students who have demonstrated potential but have not been able to consistently realise their potential in the classroom.

These students will be identified through a teacher nomination process to the relevant Primary Coordinators. Students nominated will be considered and a decision on the composition of the group will be made by the Head of Primary, in consultation with the Talent Development team. Primary students identified for either of these groups will be withdrawn from their class activities at a time determined by the Head of Primary and the Talent Development Coordinator at the beginning of each academic term.

If you wish to nominate your child for one of the groups, you will need to access the nomination form on the BDC website or by clicking here. Your child may also nominate themselves, there is also a form provided.

All nominations from parents/students and teachers need to be sent to myself by the end of Week 2 (Friday 8 February). This does not guarantee a placement but I assure you all applications will be seriously considered by the team.

If you have any questions, please email me: [email protected] or Patrick Galvin: [email protected]

This week we focussed on timetabling and organising the department for another busy year. Individual music lessons will begin next week, Week 2. Your child’s tutor should have made contact with you to organise time and day by then.

We offer many music ensembles for your children to get involved with. These include:

swimming CarnivalsThe College swimming carnivals will be held in Week 3 of this term. The Senior Primary Carnival will be on Monday 11 February and the Secondary Carnival will be on Tuesday 12 February. The venue is the Coffs Harbour War Memorial Pool in Coffs Street. All parents should have already received a note or email detailing both carnivals and information on what students should bring.

Students competing in the 200m IM at the Senior Primary or the Secondary carnival will need to be at the pool by 8.00am, so that we can get through these events before the rest of the school arrives. All other students will go to school as normal and will be transported to the venue by bus. The carnivals are a compulsory part of the school curriculum and therefore all students must attend. There will be some water based novelty events for those students who are not competing, however we also expect students to be involved in the house spirit on the day and cheer on their peers in the competitive events.

Competitors are asked to check the events they have entered into this week, as there will not be an opportunity to make any changes on the day of competition.

Alice Jamison is running Kodaly music classes for all children interested in music. The classes help to develop a child’s confidence in music as it enhances their understanding of the structure of music: developing pitch, rhythm and a strong inner ear. They are very much based in games and the children are given the opportunity to enjoy music in a relaxed environment. These classes are a great base for someone already learning an instrument or for a child interested in music and not yet ready to begin learning an instrument. Classes that will be run this year are:

Primary (K-6) - Wednesday at 8am in Music Room 1Lower secondary (7-8) – Thursday at 8am in Music Room 1

Cost is $5 per lesson.

The Primary Bands program will run again this year. Students in Years 3-6 are encouraged to join the training program, where they will begin the learning process on a band instrument as well as practice and perform in a band situation. No experience is necessary. Students in Years 5-6, who were in the training program or who have started to learn a band instrument and reading music are encouraged to join the performance band, where they will continue tutorials and band life.

This is a very popular program, with fun rehearsals, performances, eisteddfods and plans for a weekend music camp. Cost is $13 per week, which covers tutorials/instrumental lesson. Instrument hire is $40 per term. A small, one-off initial setup cost is involved, after that; band rehearsals are at no cost.

Please contact Mrs Hazel Buchanan on 0458572525 or [email protected]. Alternatively, contact the Music Office on 6651 5644 ext. 218 for further information.

Superstrings is an ensemble for students in Years 4-6, who have begun to learn a string instrument (violin, viola, ‘cello, double bass) and reading music, who would like to be part of a string group. This is a very popular and strong program, with fun rehearsals, performances, eisteddfods and plans for a weekend music camp.

The only costs associated with this would be $40 per term if you need to hire an instrument and the cost of camp, which is yet to be finalised.

Please contact Ms Louise Ray on 0438384286 or [email protected] Alternatively, contact the Music Office on 6651 5644 ext. 218 for further information.

This band is in its infancy and we have great hopes for some great music with this group. Any secondary student who can play guitar, read music and able to practice their part at home or at school during their break times are welcome.

There is no cost associated with the band.

Please contact Mr Santo Cimino on 0407292444 or email [email protected] for further information. Alternatively, contact the Music Office on 6651 5644 ext. 218 for further information.

We have vacancies for students wishing to learn a brass instrument: trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba. Mr Gergely Malyusz is a very talented and experienced brass musician and we are very fortunate to have him available to teach your children.

Please contact Mr Gergely Malyusz on 0433379597 or email [email protected] for further information.

out oF sChool hours CareWe would like to welcome you all back to 2013 and hope you all have enjoyed your holidays. These holidays OSHC staff and kids did some very exciting activities and got to go on some cool excursions. Our Camp-In Day was a blast, children got to play party games in the morning and then had game of cricket with Alex. Later we changed the OSHC room into a dining room, children help set out plates, cups and forks. We then got cooking. While staff cooked up spaghetti bolognese the kids buttered the bread. We then got into our PJ’s, took out our pillows and watched movies. I would like to thank the children who attend Camp-In Day, as your behaviour was beautiful and you made this night very memorable.

We also had a Mad Scientist day where Mr Hutton in the science department showed the kids some awesome science experiments while the OSHC team did other experiments like the erupting volcanoes and foamy fountain. I would like to thank the staff who volunteered these holidays for making them the best and hope to see you all next vacation Care.

As we have started after school care, I ask that parents please return booking forms to the OSHC Office or Front Office. ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF GRAFTON BISHOP KEITH SLATER

AD CLERUM 2 ISSUED 22 January 2013

============================================== Dear Sisters and Brothers, Greetings in Christ. Whilst I have been on leave over the past couple of weeks I have been doing some deep thinking, praying and reflection in relation to the future. As you are aware I am in the tenth year of my appointment as the Bishop of the Diocese of Grafton. The Diocesan Ordinance gives scope for the extension of the appointment of the Bishop in increments through to the age of 70. You are also aware that 2014 is the year of the Centenary of the Diocese. It was originally my intention to ask for an extension for 12-18 months to cover that period of time. Even so, as a result of my thinking, praying and reflecting, it is my intention to retire at the completion of my 10 years as the Bishop on 14 November 2013. It is also my intention to take accumulated Long Service Leave and Annual Leave from August 11 2013. This would allow for the process of discerning a new Bishop to commence sometime after I officially notify the Metropolitan in writing of my intention to retire in November. This will allow time to discern, elect and appoint a new Bishop in time for the celebrations of the Centenary Year. I have made this decision to retire believing that the Centenary Year would be a very appropriate introduction for a new Bishop to the life of the Diocese. As I will not have the opportunity to visit every Parish in the next six months I propose that there will be four Mission and Ministry Regional Farewell Gatherings in early July to give the opportunity for the people of each Region to gather, to worship, and to share the missional stories that we have been a part of over the past ten years. On the 10 August there will be a Diocesan Celebration of Thanksgiving for Mission and for the life that we have shared together. Making this decision has not been easy, but now that it is made Lorraine and I feel comfortable and have a sense of rightness for us as a couple. There will be the opportunity for me to say more over the next few months, but for now let me say that Lorraine and I have greatly appreciated the love and care and support of each of you across the Diocese. We have faced some tough issues together but the generosity of spirit will always be a memorable gift for us. The character of this Diocese is marked by the depth of faith and the generosity of spirit. With my prayers and blessings to each of you, Peace and blessings,

The Right Reverend Keith Slater Bishop of the Diocese of Grafton
