THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Please sitGenesis 28.10-17

A reading from the Book of Genesis.

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the LORD stood beside him and said, ‘I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place – and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Please sitRevelation 12.7-12

A reading from the Book of Revelation.

War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, ‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!’ For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Please stand and face the deacon

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Choir Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

I saw an angel flying in mid-heaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.

All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Revelation 14.6

GOSPEL John 1.47-51

The Lord be with you.And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

THE NICENE CREED Please stand

Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The President takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts

God of glory, as you appointed angels to minister in your presence,so may all our worship bring you worthy praise;through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

It is indeed right and good, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks,Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,through your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. You reveal your wise purposefor the salvation of the human raceby assigning to the angels and archangelsthe ministry of your steadfast love and protection. While they contemplate your glory, standing before you and singing your praise, they keep a faithful vigil for us,guarding us along the way that leads to life, and guiding us towards the kingdom of your light. In joyful gladness we unite our voices with theirsand sing the ageless hymn of your praise:

The choir sings

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Holy, holy, holy,Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God of Hosts Pleni sunt coeli et terra Heaven and earth are full of gloria tua. your glory. Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus qui venit Blessed is he that comethin nomine Domini. in the name of the Lord,Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

Please sit or kneel

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and winemay be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,we bring before you this bread and this cupand we thank you for counting us worthyto stand in your presence and serve you.

Page 14: 10 · 6 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Please sit Genesis 28.10-17 A reading from the Book of Genesis. Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran

14

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The President breaks the consecrated bread, saying

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body,Because we all share in one bread.

THE GIVING OF COMMUNION

The President invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.Blessed are those who are called to his supper.Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The President and people receive the Communion. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive the Communion. The practice at the Cathedral is to receive the wafer in the hand; if you are concerned about drinking from the common cup, please take the wafer only – please do not dip your wafer in the cup. The Church believes that the fullness of God’s grace is given when only one of the two elements of Holy Communion is received.

Gluten free wafers are available on request. If you do not wish to receive communion, you are invited to come forward for a blessing. Please hold this service book in your hands as an indication to the ministers.

At the distribution the minister says to each communicant

The body of Christ or The blood of Christ

The communicant responds Amen, and then receives.

During Communion the Choir will sing Agnus Dei from Missa Brevis (Berkeley) and the motet The Gateway of Heaven (Paul Trepte).

LAYING ON OF HANDS AND ANOINTINGThe laying on of hands and anointing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan’s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you.

AGNUS DEIAgnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

If you would like to learn more about either of these roles, please make contact with James Garrard, Canon Precentor on 01353 660335 [email protected] or Grahame Hoskin, Head Verger on 01353 660303 [email protected]
