Died in Christ Mass of Christian Burial was held for Mary Lou Weber this past week. Please keep Mary Lou and her family in your prayers.

We celebrate the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time on June 10, and this week marks the first time the Church celebrates a Sunday of “Ordinary Time” since February 11, almost four months ago. In the meantime, of course, we have observed the seasons of Lent and Easter, and then at the conclusion of the Easter season we celebrated three other great feasts on Sundays: Pentecost, Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi. Following these celebrations the Church now settles into the long ecclesial summertime that leads us back to the beginning of the next liturgical year, which begins this year on December 2, the first Sunday of Advent. As we forge into the summertime of the Church year, let it be our resolve to turn away from the pattern of sin, so that with all God’s holy people we might be numbered among the sisters and brothers of the Lord. In Christ, Fr. G. Arockiya Newton

Fr. Arockiya Newton Baptism preparation classes are by appointment. Please call the Parish Office to register for the class.

Mass Intentions If you would like to request a Mass

intention for either a weekday or weekend Mass, please stop by the Parish Office.

The customary donation per Mass is $10.

Saint Andrew Fall Festival

Sunday September 16, 2018

While you are out and about this summer and you see something you think would make a good silent auction item or could be a prize for one of our festival games, would you consider purchasing and donating it?

Suggestions:

• You are out of town and are shopping in a unique store

• You go to another community festival and find a vendor selling creative crafts

• You find a sale that you just can’t pass up

We rely heavily on the donation of auction items and prizes for festival games from parishioners and friends. You may drop off all donations at any time at Saint Andrew Parish Office during office hours.

Thank you in advance for thinking of the Fall Festival!

The next festival meeting is Monday, June 11, 5:30 PM at the Saint Andrew Parish Office.

If you have questions or would like to help us with the Fall Festival, please contact either:

Melissa Anderson: [email protected] or (763) 441-1483

Jackie Sadowski: [email protected] or (763) 360-4822

99 days until the Festival!

you make a life by what you give.” ~Winston Churchill

A Vision for visions...

Adorers Needed 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM Saturday

Let us take a closer look at the sacred vessel, the monstrance, that houses the Body, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord. The monstrance draws all eyes to the Sacred Host that is seemingly surrounded by rays, like the sun. Similarly, we each are called to be a “Living Monstrance,” radiating the presence of the Lord Who dwells in us.

The monstrance is surmounted by a cross ... what does this tell us?

Let us look at Jesus in the Monstrance, Who humbles Himself to come before us as a piece of bread. Let us reflect on our own life's situations that call us to humility. Are we humble, as God wants us to be, to bear our crosses daily? Other virtues such as patience, temperance, self-control and piety will soon follow.

The Eucharist: Jesus truly present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity!

May our Adoration never cease. For more information contact Colleen Solors, 763-441-7179, or Eva Jahnke, 763-257-7109. We guarantee it will be the best hour of your week!

Masses for the Week

We praise You for Your goodness and love. You teach us that each vocation is born in prayer and only through prayer does it persevere and bear fruit. We ask You to stir the hearts of all those You call to the priesthood and consecrated life in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Make them generous. Make them courageous. Make them joyful in giving everything to Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden because of their disobedience. But Jesus says in today’s Gospel that when we are obedient to God’s will—when we use our gifts to serve one another—we become part of His family. “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.”

I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome I received this past weekend. I haven’t been hugged that much since I was a little boy going to visit grandma. It felt good, and it feels good to be back at Saint Andrew in Elk River. As we drove back from Arizona to Minnesota we go through seven different states. The landscapes are a little different in each one, and each one is special and beautiful. From the mountains in Arizona and New Mexico to the hills, plains and green fields of the Midwest, I realized the beauty that God created in nature. God created each of us different and unique. Each one of us no matter what our ethnic background or color of our skin, is made in the image and likeness of God our creator. Too often we make quick judgements of people by the way the look, without really getting to know them. Let us all take time to see the beauty and the reflection of God’s presence in each person we meet. They are all our brothers and sisters in Christ. Quote of Pope Francis: “God wants us all to see one another as brothers and sisters and to live as such, forming a great human family that is harmonious in its diversity.” “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind and love your

neighbor as yourself.” —Luke 10:27

Although we did not place in the top three councils we did have a very good showing. Now its time to start collecting for next year.

The Saint Andrew council will host the district installation of new council officers for the next fraternal year on Thursday, June 14, at 6:00 PM. This includes the Big Lake and Zimmerman councils. The Mass, installation ceremony and meal to follow is open to all council members. Camping and picnics are fun for family and friends, but don’t let mosquitoes, ticks and gnats take a bite out of your plans. Most bug bites just cause itching, but some can put us at risk for serious illnesses like Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus.

When outside, consider these tips: Use of a combined insect repellant and sunblock is not recommended. Many repellants will cover mosquitoes, gnats and ticks in one product. Apply sunblock before the repellant. Whether you choose a spray or a lotion, check the label for 20-30 % DEET and approval of the Environmental Protection Agency (EAP). Always follow directions on the bottle. Do not use on babies less than two months old; instead use mosquito net-

ting on strollers. Don’t spray directly on your face; spray on your

hands, then apply to face and ears. Use soap and water to remove repellents. Other repellents to consider have picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-methane-diol. (PMD) These should not be used on children less than three years old. Permethrin is sprayed on clothing, tents and other gear. It should not be put directly on skin.

Avoid going out at dusk when mosquitoes and ticks are active. When you do go out:

• Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks to cover your skin. (Tuck pants into socks);

• Check everyone for ticks after being outside. Check the entire body, especially under the arms, in and around the ears and hair, behind the knees, in the groin (crotch), around the waist and inside the belly button. Don’t forget between the toes! Use a mirror to check yourself.

• Take a shower within two hours after being outside to help wash away ticks.

• Put dry clothes in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks.

• Check your pets for ticks, including inside their mouth. Your vet can recommend appropriate products for your pet(s).

Use tweezers to remove a tick as soon as you see it.

• Grab the tick near its head or mouth (the part closest to your Skin).

• Gently pull the whole tick straight out. Do not crush or twist the tick.

• Wash your hands and the bite with soap and water.

• Put rubbing alcohol on the bite.

• Don’t use a hot match to kill and remove a tick. What do you do with the tick? Get rid of the tick by putting it in rubbing alcohol or flushing it down the toilet. You can put a tick in the trash, but only if it’s in a sealed container or wrapped tightly in tape. Remember, never crush a tick with your fingers. A zip-lock bag or empty pill bottle can be used to contain the tick if you’re taking it to the doctors office. If you have questions regarding a bug or tick bite, seek medical attention. If you or your child gets a rash or fever after getting bitten by a tick, call your doctor. Tell the doctor about the tick bite, when it happened and where you think you were when you got the bite.

~continued on next column~

Gnats are particularly pesky this year. You might not even realize you have been bitten until the area swells and starts to itch or hurt. There may even be some blood. Wash the area with soap and water. Consider some over-the-counter bite cream. An ice pack might help, too. Mosquitoes lay eggs near standing water. Check your yard for anything that holds water like planters, pools or bird baths. Old toys and tires can hold water and should be removed or emptied. Rain barrels should be tightly covered. Many types of ticks live in tall grass, bushes, and wooded areas. Keeping these trimmed will lessen the chance of dogs, mice and deer becoming infected. Animals may also carry ticks in their fur. Clear bushes, tall grasses, and leaves from around your home. Mow the lawn often. Use mulch or gravel to separate your patio or play equipment from wooded or brushy areas. Remove plants that attract deer and put up a fence to keep deer out of your yard. This web address includes a one-minute video showing how to remove a tick: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/dtopics/tickborne/prevention.html
