The Lake Current – March 2012
Grand Knight’s Message
March 18, 2012
Brothers:
Welcome to spring! It’s hard to believe we endured such a warm and mild winter, especially for
this Texan. But thank God our heating expenses were reduced when we needed it the most.
Easter will be here before we know it.
Brothers, our Council has reached a new milestone thanks to the hard work of you fine
gentlemen. For the first time ever, our Council will host three Conference events in one fraternal
year. In fact, we will host these events within a four month period. The first of these events was
a tremendous success thanks to so many of our members. On Sunday, February 26, we honored
Gary Leonardo, Chapter President, as the 2012 Brendan Toohey Memorial Award recipient.
Joining our Conference that day was our State Deputy Sal and Margie Restivo and our State
C&B Director Jack and Sandy Ferrarotti. It was a great day for Gary and Lilli Leonardo.
The second Conference event is the April 20 Chapter/Conference meeting. We need volunteers
to prepare and serve the dinner at 7:00 p.m. Please contact me to assist with the dinner. Finally,
we will host the “new” Third Degree on June 22, 2012. All Third Degree members are welcome
to join us for both of these events. I know you brothers will make our Council proud with your
attendance.
The Conference was so impressed by our efforts at the Brendan Toohey breakfast, they’ve
invited us to host any future event of our choosing. This honor was bestowed on our Council
due to the hard work of our membership. The credit for planning and managing this event goes
to our breakfast committee: Rob Firriolo, Steve Gheduzzi, Tom Curley, John Adams PGK,
Joe Sinisi, Joe Groneman, Jonathan Garcia, Charlie LaBarbara PGK, Darren Higgins,
Brian Repko, Donny Ricker and Anthony Pelliccio PGK. Special thanks to Rob Firriolo for
Chairing the menu and managing the kitchen, Steve Gheduzzi for pricing and buying the Costco
items, Rob for pricing & picking up the Ace Endico items, Jonathan Garcia for ordering the Ace
food & supply items, Tom Curley for buying & picking up supplies & picking up the bagels,
Brian Repko for getting Carmel Bagel to donate five dozen bagels and cream cheese. Thanks to
our cooks, servers, bartender, accountants and volunteers: Rob Firriolo, Anthony Pelliccio PGK,
Steve Gheduzzi, Tom Curley, Brian Repko, Santino Petrasanti, Joe Groneman, Kevin
McGuckian, Darren Higgins, John Malandrino, Jim Degnan, Regina Negryz, Ellie
O’Connor, Mike McDonald PGK, Anthony Falco, Bob Manfredi, Ray Higgins and
Community service volunteer James Carmody. Special thanks to our Color Corps: Faithful
Navigator Bob Cuthbert, Color Corps Commander Bobby Palazzo, PGK, Donny Ricker,
Bob Manfredi, and Mike Holmes. (continued…)

Grand Knight’s Message (continued)
Thanks to Fr. John DeBellis for recognizing the Knights at the Mass and for his Invocation prior
to the breakfast. Lastly, thanks to the Conference & Chapter Officers, especially Conference
Chairman John Bianco, Jr., for allowing us to host this event and thanks to all the attendees.
Our Council is blessed to have many fine Knights in our membership; brothers who go above
and beyond serving our Council and community. It is rare we have the opportunity to publicly
recognize these gentlemen outside our Council chambers. Fortunately, this year we had this
opportunity. From our founding and all forty years since, this brother has served our Council
with honor and dignity. For the past ten years he represented our Council at the Northern
Westchester / Putnam St. Patrick’s Day Parade – the third largest in all of New York State. Our
Council is humbled and honored to recognize our brother, Russ Lavan, as the 2012 Grand
Marshal of the Northern Westchester / Putnam St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
During a grand ceremony on February 3rd, in the presence of family and friends, brother Knight
Lavan was inducted as the 2012 Grand Marshal. The morning of the parade, Russ, with his
family and friends, enjoyed a delicious traditional Irish breakfast prepared and served by the
Hanrahan family. Later that day, escorted by his lovely wife Pat, Russ led the parade from the
back seat of brother Knight Mike Muenz’s 1956 Cadillac convertible. Immediately behind Russ
and Pat were their family, friends and Russ’s assistant, brother Knight Bill Dowling. The
Mother Cabrini Assembly Color Corps followed close behind, led by our Faithful Navigator
Bob Cuthbert, PGK, our Color Corps Commander Bobby Palazzo, PGK and members:
John Adams PGK, Mike Holmes, Steve Gheduzzi, Bob Manfredi and Donny Ricker.
Joining our Assembly were District Deputy Tony Mazzuca and two other Color Corps
members from Fr. Damien Assembly. The Color Corps looked awesome with the American
Flag proudly leading the way.
Our new Council banner made its first St. Patrick’s parade debut with the assistance of bearers
Billy Moffat and Ricky O’Connor, Sr. A contingent of thirty-plus Council members marched
in support of our Grand Marshal, Russ Lavan. The Council recognized all American service
members by displaying our “Support the Troops Banner.” At the end of the parade the Council
and Assembly saluted the veterans as they marched between us.
After the parade, our Council hosted a party with corned beef sandwiches and live entertainment.
Grand Marshal Russ Lavan and wife Pat were piped into the Council Chamber by the Stephen
P. Driscoll F.O.P. Memorial Lodge Pipers. The Pipers entertained us with numerous songs
before retiring from our Chambers. The Council presented Russ with a well deserved and very
appropriate gift, thanks to the efforts of brother John Malandrino. A replica of the Scottish
Claymore Sword was given to Russ as a memento of his service as the 2012 Grand Marshal.
During the party, our guests were entertained by the Kelly Oster Irish Step Dancers and an
excellent, traditional Irish singer. The day was a wonderful success thanks to: Bill Dowling, Jim
Degnan, John Malandrino, Lou Albano PGK, Dennis Tracy, Mike Yodice, Ricky O’Connor,
Sr., Anthony Pelliccio PGK, Ed Scheck, John Flynn, Brian Repko, Anthony Falco, Joe
Groneman, Kevin McGuckian, Rob Firriolo, Jonathan Garcia, Joe Sinisi, Darren Higgins,
Daniel Baker, Vinnie Macina, John Livulpi, John Arcuri, Angelo DeSimone and all the (continued…)

the Unborn Child at Our Lady of the Lake/Mt. Carmel Church; the Conference Awards Banquet

Mass for the Unborn Child – March 25th
The Knights of Columbus has been a leader in the pro-life movement for over 30 years. With the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child soon approaching on March 26, the feast of the Annunciation this year, Knights have the opportunity to stand up and speak out against the evils of abortion.
Councils use the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child, always a successful event throughout the Order, to come together with friends and family to host a variety of prayer programs within their parishes and their communities that show our never-ending commitment to unborn children and their mothers.
Our Council is holding our own Mass for the Unborn Child on Sunday, March 25th, at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Carmel. If you normally attend another Mass at St. James or Our Lady of the Lake, or do not usually attend weekly Mass, please consider joining us for this special Mass to come together with friends and family to pray, and show our support, for unborn children and their mothers.
Columbia Magazines Wanted
Our program to donate Columbia magazines is up and running thanks to brother Knight Dennis O’Connor! Please bring your copy of Columbia magazine to the Council in support of our program to donate them to others who may have an interest in learning about the good works of our Order.

Founder’s Day Mass – March 29th at St. James
On Founder’s Day this March 29th, we celebrate the anniversary of the Knights of Columbus.
As we celebrate the legacy of Father McGivney and the contributions of our brother Knights since 1882, we also prepare for an even greater future as we live out the vision of our founder.
The anniversary of the realization of Father McGivney’s dream is a cause for celebration.
Councils throughout the Order are urged to observe this day – among their own members and with the community at large – as a reminder of what the Knights of Columbus has accomplished in the past years, the ideals of the Order, and their own local achievements
We will be celebrating Founder's Day (March 29) with a special 7:30 a.m. Mass in the Chapel of Life in St. James the Apostle Church. Start your day off right and join us!

Supreme Chaplain Named Archbishop of Baltimore
The Knights of Columbus congratulates our Supreme Chaplain, Bishop William Lori on his
appointment as Archbishop of Baltimore. His appointment to the Premiere See in the United
States is a testament to his excellent spiritual, moral, intellectual and administrative leadership
in the Diocese of Bridgeport and his leadership nationally as the Chairman of the USCCB’s Ad
Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.
It is notable that his new archdiocese has a long
tradition in the area of religious freedom.
Baltimore's first Archbishop, John Carroll, was a
stalwart defender of religious liberty in the early
United States and cousin of Charles Carroll - the
only Catholic signer of the Declaration of
Independence. In addition, Baltimore is a city that is
very important in the history of the Knights of
Columbus. In Baltimore, our founder, Venerable
Servant of God Father Michael McGivney, studied
for the priesthood and was ordained in that city's
Cathedral by then Archbishop James Gibbons in
1877.
By Roman decree, holder of this post is the “first among equals” of the American bishops. An
Indiana native, Bishop Lori will succeed Cardinal Edwin O'Brien, who the pontiff named as
Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre last August.
As Catholic blogger Rocco Palmo notes, Bishop Lori was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of
Washington in 1977 and an auxiliary there in 1995. The theologian-prelate is an alumnus of
Mount St Mary's in Emmitsburg, one of two diocesan seminaries in the Baltimore church -- a
unique attribute among the nation's 197 dioceses. The chief protégé of the capital's late
Cardinal James Hickey (who ordained him a bishop at 43), Lori has come into an even brighter
spotlight over recent months as the appointed head of the bishops' newly-created ad hoc
Committee on Religious Liberty, and thus the quarterback of the church's recent surge against
the contraceptive mandate of the Federal health-care reform law.

Movie Filmed in Our Council Premiering in Carmel!
Funerals and Felonies, an independent movie that used our Council and other Carmel locations for filming last year, is premiering in Carmel at the end of March. Even more exciting is that our Past Grand Knight, Bobby Palazzo, is a supporting actor in this film.
Our Corporation Board of Directors ensured that filming would not interfere with our members’ use of the lounge and other facilities. Most members never even knew that the filming had taken place. In exchange for use of our building, the Board negotiated to receive a share of any profits the film should make. Billed as the story of “a thrill seeking dreamer and his trusty sidekick [who] get more than they bargained for when their harebrained schemes backfire,” Funerals and Felonies is now complete and will be premiered in Carmel at Carmel Cinema 8 on Thursday, March 29th at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 31st at noon. Please support our Council and brother Knight Bobby by attending this premiere. View the film trailer at: http://mercurialfilms.com/films.html.
