This year's Oslo ArchitectureTriennale looks at degrowth, aneconomic strategy that calls for areduction of both production andconsumption, and asks whatarchitecture could do to supportit. Dezeen editor-at-large AmyFrearson picks out 10 of the mostinteresting ideas.
Enough: The Architecture ofDegrowth is on show in venuesacross the Norwegian capital until24 November. It explores differentways that architecture couldrespond to "a time of climateemergency and social division".
Central to the concept is the ideathat continuous economic growthis part of the problem. Itproposes that a degrowtheconomy, rather than a capitalisteconomy, offers the answers.
Degrowth promotes sharingand co-operation"Degrowth is a designed reductionof total energy and material use torealign society with planetarylimits, while improving people'slives and distributing resourcesfairly," explained Phineas Harper,one of the triennale's curators, in arecent column on Dezeen.
"It is an economic model thatrecognises that the route togreater welfare for all is not one ofmore extraction and expansion,but of more sharing and co-operation."

Source materials first, designsecondItalian design and research studioGisto proposes a new approach tothe design process. Rather thancoming up with a concept first andthen finding the materials for it,the designers suggests startingwith the materials and shaping adesign around them.
This project, called Multiplo,shows some of the structures thatcan be made out of typicalelements found on demolitionsites, from old window frames toventilation fixtures.

Use recycled materials forbespoke solutionsArtist Kalle Grude uses elementsthat building companies throwaway to create transientstructures, which can easily betaken apart after use and recycledagain. He doesn't see the point inusing new materials when thereare used materials everywhere.
For the triennale, he created atable with integrated seating to beused by visitors. After the show isover, it will be disassembled sothat the materials can be usedelsewhere. He calls thedesign Shelter for One Stone, OneTree Two People and Four Birds.

It looks at ways ofoffering experiences that peoplecan enjoy without having to takelong journeys.
Examples include a levitation suitwhich allows guests to sleep inmid-air like astronauts, and a"wearable glass of wine".

This is great. This is what we need. Shrinkthis economy of overconsumption,promising people a green future throughbuying the right products. That's bs. Butre-use is the answer. I want morebuildings without program with 200 yearlifespans, that can be redefinedindefinitely.
