ELDERS’ UPDATE I could tell the tears were ready to flow. I was relaxing in the living room when Daughter #2 pushed open the door and made a beeline for the sofa. She’d been outside with her sisters playing in the yard. I knew immediately by the look on her face that something had happened. Apparently, #2 was asking too many questions of #1 which annoyed #1 and when #2 asked why #1 was annoyed #1 said it was because #2 was asking “stupid questions.” Got it? Yeah, it took me another go around too. There are things we don’t tolerate in our family and belittling is one of them. Daughter #1 was called in and seated in front of me. Rather than sternly scolding her for the insensitivity she showed her sister I decided to use the incident as a teaching opportunity and gave her four reasons why you never tell someone her questions are stupid. 1. People ask questions because they are seeking information they don’t already know. While you may know the answer and it may seem like a no-brainer to you, to the questioner it’s not so obvious. 2. To the questioner, the information is important enough to ask for it. You may think it’s not but it’s not really about what you think, it’s about what the inquirer wants (or needs). 3. To say a question is stupid is to dismiss the questioner as a person and disregard her feelings. This, plainly put, is rude. 4. Declaring questions as stupid won’t fly in the real world. Tell someone one time that her question is stupid and she’ll never ask you another question again. And that’s not a good thing. ELDERS’ UPDATE I could tell the tears were ready to flow.

I was relaxing in the living room when Daughter #2 pushed open the door and made a beeline for the sofa. She’d been outside with her sisters playing in the yard. I knew immediately by the look on her face that something had happened.

Apparently, #2 was asking too many questions of #1 which annoyed #1 and when #2 asked why #1 was annoyed #1 said it was because #2 was asking “stupid questions.”

Got it?

And that’s not a good thing.

outreach. Here’s a list of items being collected the next two months. Please pray for this event and help us make

this our best year ever!

Elders’ Update (Continued) The Elders and Pastors realize we’ve been going through a lot of changes at Calvary Bible Church over the past couple years. We realize that change is often difficult. And we know that change often spawns questions. If you have questions—about anything—please ask. No question is stupid; we don’t see it that way and we hope you don’t either. We are always willing to stop and answer a question. In fact, we love questions! Update: Our summer meetings were mostly consumed with the search for a Senior Pastor. Sorting through resumes, interviews, discussions, plans . . . as you can imagine, it all takes a great deal of time. (In fact, as I write this we are on the eve of the candidating weekend for Senior Pastor and I think of all the hours that have been invested to get to this point). But in addition to all of that, much got done: counseling, visitation, training (the men’s leadership class kicked off), and we kicked off another ministry year. One other thing, you may have wondered who is living in the parsonage. Several weeks ago Jon Bisset, the Executive Director of River Valley Ranch (a Christian camp in Manchester, MD) contacted us inquiring about the possibility of temporarily housing a new staff member who was moving here from Georgia. They do not currently have housing ready for him and his family at the camp and was wondering if they could rent the parsonage until housing was ready (estimating Spring of 2020). The parsonage was vacant so we agreed. This is just another way we can use the resources God has given us to minister to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Please continue to pray for us as we pray for you. Pray for the search for a Worship Pastor. Pray for unity. Pray that the ministry at Calvary Bible Church might be effective for equipping saints and reaching the lost . . . all to the glory of God! In Christ, Your Elders and Pastors

It is time for an annual vision checkup. Are you still able to clearly see a world that needs to hear about Jesus, and are you in tune with God's desire for every tribe and nation to know His truth? Or have you become nearsighted in your awareness of a lost world?

Our World Awareness Conference (WAC) this month is intended to focus our sights outward on what God is doing through our Missionary partners around the world and to challenge us to be more involved as senders. Neil Pirolo, in his book "Serving as Senders Today" (copies available in the foyer) makes the point that our missions involvement should be much more than “to give them some money, wish them well, and say, "Goodbye!".

Rather he says that those who go and those who serve as senders need to "merge their callings and talents and giftings to form the cross-cultural outreach team. All are equally important. All are vitally involved in the fulfillment of the Great Commission."

Please make it a priority to join us for WAC services and activities this year as we examine how to be a good senders and also consider if God might be calling some of us to be among those who go.

Calvary Bible Church Library

October, 2019

Greetings from the CBC Library Team!

Please forgive our dust! We are currently resetting some locations of our books. We are continuing work on our online library management system. We were hoping to have it finished shortly, but we still have books to process. The progress is coming along well and we hope to have things up and running by the first of the year. We have plans to give the library a new look and a more user-friendly atmosphere. We ask for your prayers as we continue the task that we have before us.

Books of the Month

Children’s: “How Much Does God Love Me?” is a pop-up book for young children, which explains the love of God on a personal level and includes lift flaps. It is a great book to introduce Jesus to your children. It is written by Tim Wood and illustrated by Rory Tyger, published by Oyster Books.

Junior Fiction We recommend a new two-part series entitled “Jack Staples.” The story is about an eleven-year-old boy who is whisked into a fantastical adventure filled with danger. It is written by Mark Batterson and Joel N. Clark. Published by David C. Cook.

Teen Fiction “Evolution Exposed” is a book that debunks the claims of evolutionists in the classroom. It presents the argument for creationism and will help you to combat the philosophy that is taught in Science Classes. It is written by Roger Patterson and published by Answers in Genesis. 326 pages.

Adult Non-Fiction We recommend the book, “Affair of the Mind.” It is one woman’s courageous battle to salvage her family from the devastation of pornography. It is written by Laurie Hall and published by Focus on the Family. 268 pages.

Adult Fiction “Autumn Tales” is the story of a small town named Acorn Hill, where storytelling to visitors is the favorite past-time of three sisters. They own their own bed and breakfast called Grace Chapel Inn where they come into constant contact with people from around the country. It is written by Jolyn and William Sharp and is published by Guideposts. 280 pages.
