  • Oracle Database 11gR2 for EBS

At the application level make sure it has all the pre-requisites (Interoperability Notes EBS 12.0 and 12.1 with Database 11gR2

    [ID 1058763.1])

Some libraries and kernel parameters at Operating Systems needs to be adjusted. Were Oracle Linux 5 update 8 (64bits).

No extra steps needed for 11.2.0.2 (everything in the package)

Reviewing the Run the Pre-Upgrade Information Tool did not bring any outstanding issue

  • Oracle Database 11gR2 for EBS

DB Upgrade took us about 4 hours (decompile and compile). Our DB was 500 Gb and server is Intel 2 quad cores and

    6Gb RAM. Very hardware dependent.

Training? An Apps DBA can run it without problems guided by the existing documentation.

    Functional Applications issues? None.

  • Oracle Database 11gR2

Honestly, we did the DB upgrade just to be on the latest release, but

Well be researching on: Automatic Block Repair, recovering a block on a standby DB

    without using RMAN

FlashBack Data Archive, querying up for some specific tables/data that are being deleted.

Scheduler enhancements, supports notifications by email.

ASM enhancements, support for other file types and new commands (ASMCMD)

  • WebLogic Server Our experience

    Oracle Business Intelligence EE

Testing and Proof of concept for E-Business Suite for Oracle Access Manager

    Fusion Applications: Financials and HCM

    Discoverer 11g for EBS Vision

  • Skills and Learning Curve

The main difference is with the concept. New terminology: domain, servers, clusters, node manager, machine. Spend some time learning these concepts.

For an experienced Apps DBA, it takes at least 4 weeks average to familiarize with WLS

Installation for Discoverer, OBIEE and Oracle Access Manager was medium complexity (2 weeks each)

Installation and configuration for Fusion Apps on-premise was a higher complexity (8 weeks on first installation)

  • Weblogic Server Impressions

For any FWM technology component, such as Discoverer 11g, OBIEE, WebCenter etcthe installation of Weblogic Server is an extra step to consider

Needs to understand new steps for start up and shutdown (takes longer than OC4J)

Administration of basic things is pretty similar to the OC4J, but on services it is very granular and advanced giving

    multiple options for the sysadmin

  • Takeaways

Explore multiple new features at DB 11gR2 that could enhance your EBS

Weblogic Installation takes more time and training. Spend more time testing the installation.

Get familiar with Weblogic new scripts and timing (start up and shut-down)

    Start exploring advanced Weblogic features

    Edition Based Redefinition

New features of the 11gR2 database

Enables multiple copies of the same code object to co-exist

Editioned Objects ( Code Objects )

    Database automatically manages versioning

    e.g pl/sql, views, synonyms etc.

    Non-Editioned Objects ( Storage Objects )

Application layer makes these objects effectively editioned

e.g tables, indexes, materialized views etc.

    #7 Understanding the Enablement Process

  • Copyright 2013, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 53

    #7 Understanding the Enablement Process

Schemas in the database are converted to be editions enabled

Turns on object versioning in the database

Once a schema is editions enabled it cannot be reverted

Introduces a new view of the EBS data model

A logical rather than physical representation of the data model is

    presented

Changes the way many objects are defined and patched

    New standards must be followed

Customers should fully review the new standards

  • Copyright 2013, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. 54

Logical view of the data model

All code must access the data model via the APPS synonym APPS synonym points to the Editioning View (Logical Model) Any code accessing the physical model risks accessing obsolete columns

Review the new coding standards, for example:

Cross Edition Triggers replace data upgrade scripts

Table names must be less than 29 characters

Review the new deployment standards, for example:

Custom files must be applied to the Patch file system

Custom files must be registered with the custom driver
