What to do before elementary school starts

You will receive a notice from your city hall or ward office. Your school is determined by your address. Be sure to attend the health check and information session. Get to know the teachers and ask about anything you don't understand. Conf irm the date and t ime of the entrance ceremony as well as what to bring and what to wear.

Things to prepare at home

There are many things to prepare: randoseru (a school bag), stationery, gym clothes, uwabaki (a type of indoor shoes), etc. Take a look at the actual items at the school and check where to buy them. Write your child's name on everything.

Japanese elementary school subjects inc lude Japanese, math, physical education, arts and crafts, music, etc. Students also have cleaning and school lunch serving duties.

Talk about safety as a family

Discuss what to be careful of during unsupervised time after school and when going to and from school. Confirm with the school what to do in the case of an earthquake or other disaster. Provide the school with multiple phone numbers to contact in case of an emergency.

Guardians have many responsibilities

There are many notices from the school and forms to fill out. Please ask the teachers if you need the readings of kanji to be written on important parts or if there is something that you don't understand. In order for guardians and teachers to discuss how students are doing at school, there is a home visit (katei houmon) as well as multiple parent-teacher interviews (kojin mendan) throughout the year. In addition, guardians have a chance to visit the school on sports days (undoukai), class observation days (jugyou sankan), meetings (kondankai), etc.
