After knocking off the Chase Heat four games to one in Round 1 of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs on March 3, the 100 Mile House Wranglers earned a Round 2 play-off berth against the Kamloops Storm.

The Storm is a KIJHL power-house and captured the Doug Birks Division regular season number 1 seed by a wide margin.

Kamloops knocked off fourth-seeded Sicamous in five games, with four consecutive victories after being shut out 4-0 in the first game.

The first tilt between the

Wranglers and the Storm is in Kamloops on March 8, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.

Game 2 between the Doug Birks Division rivals is also in Kamloops on March 9, starting at 7 p.m.

Games 3 and 4 are at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 100 Mile House on March 11 and 12, starting at 7 p.m.

Game 5, if necessary, will also be in 100 Mile House on March 13, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.

Games 6 and 7, if necessary, will be back in Kamloops on March 15 and 16, starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the Wranglers home games are only available in the Wranglers office at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.

The normal playoff format would have two games in one community, two in the other and then alternating sites for the last three games, with the advantage going to the top-seeded team.

The playoff schedule had to be changed to the

two-three-two format because 100 Mile House is hosting the Midget provincial championships.

Club president and KIJHL direc-

tor Tom Bachynski says it’s an incredible feeling to be heading into Round 2 of the playoffs in the team’s inaugural season.

“I couldn’t be happier for the players, the team and the town.

“I think the town deserves it for the support that it has given to the Wranglers throughout the year because it has been nothing short of remarkable. This is the payback to be able to play in the second round.”

Spring 2014 will see the inaugural Cariboo Women’s Fair at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Mother’s Day weekend May 9-10.

Organizer Kimberley Vance-Lundsbye says the new fair is intended to replace the former Mega Show as a large-scale event to attract multitudes of women, vendors, exhibitors and speakers.

“Women’s fairs are gaining popularity all over Western Canada right now ... but there’s nothing on this

scale in the North.”Featured themes

will include health and wellness, beauty and fashion, products and services, and women in business.

Mothers and daugh-

ters are especially welcomed for a fun activity just prior to Mother’s Day.

A fashion show on May 9 for adults only is aimed at showcasing mostly local clothing and accessories, she explains, and will offer a cash bar and appetizers. The cost of admission will be $10.

“We would like to see our local businesses showcase the clothes that they sell.”

On May 10, the fair will feature local ven-dors first and various

speakers. The cost of admission will be $5.

Vance-Lundsbye says salons are encouraged to register and offer some hair and beauty services at the fair.

“We’re looking for vendors that sell prod-ucts or services, which are of interest to women, and we’d like to put together a really good group of speak-ers on different issues

that are important to women.”

Psychic Rena Mac will do readings and hold a mini-workshop, and Linda Jefferson of New Roads Nutritional Consulting will speak on women’s wellness.

For more informa-tion, like Cariboo Women’s Fair on Facebook, call 250-395-1353 or e-mail to [email protected].

Reports of scammers phoning businesses claiming to be col-lecting for Yellow Pages advertising have cropped up again in British Columbia, and there are simple steps to take to protect yourself.

Mark Fernandes, spokesman for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in B.C., said scammers who claim to be collecting for Yellow Pages is a chronic prob-lem, with complaints about it coming in almost every month.

It’s a variation on an old trick, sending fake invoices for common business supplies, such as printer cartridges and paper, in hopes of sliding them by a busy office adminis-trator. Fernandes said businesses are also concerned about bad credit reports from missed invoices.

“Unfortunately, a lot of these companies that claim the Yellow Pages brand are not located in North America,” he said.

He added some appeared to be com-ing from the United Kingdom, but the BBB is unable to confirm their real location.

Yellow Pages Group spokesperson Fiona Story said the com-pany is a frequent

target for this kind of fraud because of its long-standing brand. It sponsors an annual fraud awareness cam-paign in March, and offers download-able pamphlets and other resources on its website, www.yellow-pages360solution.ca/resources/fraud/.

Customers who receive a questionable solicitation can check it by calling the Yellow Pages Group customer service department at 1-877-909-9356.

Yellow Pages Group won a lawsuit in 2012

against a copycat organi-zation doing business as “Yellow Page Ontario,” “Yellow Page Quebec” and similar names. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered the parent company to reimburse people who paid fake invoices and imposed punitive dam-ages.

For information on similar suspicious bills or phone calls from businesses other than Yellow Pages Group, contact the Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C. at main landbc.bbb.org.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260-100 Mile House has elected its board of directors for the current fiscal year.

Bob Wangensteen is the president, backed up by vice-president Ken Mills.

Ray Carlson joins the board this year as its trea-surer, and Joni Guenther has the role of secretary.

D i re c t or- at - l a r g e Dave Taylor is the Legion’s service officer and Leo Holthuysen is its second director-at-large. Legion #260’s Sergeant-at-Arms is John Tomlinson.

New committee appointments are still underway, but so far, they include mem-

bership chair Janice Smale, entertainment chair Shirley Dupuis, finance chair Carlson, poppy fund chair Elsie Urquhart, by-laws chair Rick Smale.

While the elections were held in November 2013, Mills says the zone commander was unable to visit 100 Mile House in January as planned to swear in the board, so it will done at a general meeting on March 27.

Wangensteen will not be available to attend that ceremony, so Mills will swear in the presi-dent shortly afterward.

Meanwhile, these board positions don’t require swearing-in to take effect, he notes, and they all became official 30 days after the elections.

District of 100 Mile House councillors gave staff approval to pro-ceed with advertising and the notification of adjoining property owners for the 100 Mile

Fields Store develop-ment variance permit (DVP) request on Feb. 11.

Fields wants council to vary the District sign bylaw to allow a fascia sign to be affixed to the building’s surface, which faces Highway 97.

The company wants to put a four- by 10-foot non-illuminated sign on the back of its building.

The District will con-sider issuing a DVP at its March 11 council meeting.

The 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society’s annual Ladies Ski and Mad Hatter Tea Party at the 99 Mile Ski Trails on March 2 was a huge success.

“We had a great day, despite the cold and wind,” says society spokesperson Lauren Bock.

Some 52 ladies and lasses enjoyed a ski or snow-shoe and then gathered in the lodge, where they chatted with fellow skiers and met new folks over tea and goodies, she adds.

“It was lovely to see new faces and some wonderful hats.”

Bock notes $400 was collected and it will be donated to the 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre society.

William Lake & District Credit Union-100 Mile Branch and BC Hydro generously donated some door prizes, she adds.

The workshop on non-profit governance and policy will be of interest to board members and senior staff of non-profit organizations. It focuses on the basic elements of governance—the roles and responsibilities of board members and staff—and the value of policy making as an important element of governance. The workshop will focus on questions many board members ask:

• You’ve got to have a board, but what’s it supposed to do?

• You’ve got to have bylaws but who reads them?

• Do we really need policies? • Why do Board meetings take so

much time? A healthy non-profit organization has good answers to these and other questions about governance, but for many people such questions are a big turn-off. This workshop will help you find out; (a) why questions like this aren’t the least bit boring, (b) why you aren’t alone in not having good answers to them, (c) how your governance function can be improved.

Facilitator is Graham Kelsey; Dr. Kelsey is Professor Emeritus of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia; has served on boards nationally, provincially and locally; in 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding community service.

The 108 Mile Ranch Volunteer Fire D e p a r t m e n t responded to a vehicle fire in the early morn-ing hours of March 1.

Fire chief Marcelle Ried says a resident plugged in his pickup truck’s block heater around 4 a.m., and shortly after-ward noticed it was smoking.

After unsuccessfully trying to douse the fire with an extinguisher, the resident called for fire department assis-tance around 5 a.m.

Two trucks and eight firefighters responded to find a burning pick-up truck parked in a carport, and were on scene for about an hour extinguishing the blaze.

Firefighters con-tained the flames to the carport area, which scorched the ceiling and melted plastic on a quad parked in front of the truck, Reid explains.

He notes the vehicle was a complete write-off, but the quick action by the homeowner to call for help and the timely response of the fire crew prevented what

could have become a house fire.

“It was close. If he had waited or he was sleep-ing, or we were longer than we were, it could have been a lot worse.”

The fire chief r e c o m m e n d s folks keep a

careful watch on block heaters and attached power cords by inspect-ing them regularly, and then periodically hav-ing them checked out by a mechanic.

“Sometimes we don’t look at them on a regu-lar basis; we think ‘it worked last year, it will work this year’, and stuff happens.”

The B.C. Liberal gov-ernment has appointed Jan Unwin as superin-tendent of graduation and student transitions.

Unwin will focus on developing partnerships between post-second-ary institutions, school districts, employers and government.

The nature of learn-ing is changing. The Ministry of Advanced

Education, the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism

and Skills Training and the Ministry of Education are work-ing together to ensure a seam-less delivery of education and skills training from second-ary school right through to the entry in the workplace.

A seamless education sector will allow students to achieve

their best, whichever pathway they choose.

The appointment of Unwin will sup-port the ongoing implementation of the 10 Year Skills Training Plan for Youth that the prov-ince is going to launch in the near future. The plan is designed

to help youth discover careers that offer bright futures and meet British Columbia’s economic needs across a wide range of industry sec-tors.

As superintendent of graduation and student transitions, Unwin will

be seeking out oppor-tunities to increase the number of graduates moving from second-ary school successfully into the world of work/post-secondary/trades or technical programs and careers of all kinds.

She will be working to expand dual credit programs and oppor-tunities that allow secondary students to earn credits towards post-secondary while still in high school.

Unwin is well known and respected throughout the edu-cation system for her work as an innovative elementary and second-ary principal, assistant

superintendent and superintendent in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. During her term as superintendent, the district was rec-ognized nationally for such innovations as its environmental school, cyberschool, and the iPod Literacy Project.

The B.C. Liberal gov-ernment announced its decision to close the government’s office supply distribution cen-tre in Victoria on Feb. 25.

The decision was made as a result of the Core Review pro-cess, and after a review revealed directly pur-chasing government office supplies from a private distributor would provide signifi-cant savings over the current model.

By moving to a pri-vate-sector distribution model, government will take advantage of the highly competitive private-sector market-place for office supplies and provide better value to taxpayers. Based on projected volumes remaining stable, sav-ings are estimated to be approximately 10 per cent or up to $3 million over three years, begin-ning in fiscal 2015/16.

The ministry is work-ing with the BC Public Service Agency, along with the union, to find placements for staff within government. No job losses are expected as part of this closure.

A request for propos-als for a private supplier will be issued in four to six weeks. The distribu-tion centre will remain operational until an alternate arrangement has been put in place in order to ensure a smooth transition.

This is an example of finding savings with-out staffing or service reductions, Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Technology, Innovation

and Citizens’ Services.“Core review is about

making sure we are getting the best value for taxpayers. Today, private suppliers can provide us with lower prices and higher effi-ciency for our office supplies.”

Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines and Responsible for Core Review, says this is another modest, but significant step in saving taxpayer dollars and ensuring govern-ment is structured for success.

“We remain com-mitted to controlling spending, finding effi-ciencies and making fiscally responsible decisions on the behalf of British Columbians.”
