THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horri-ble, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we fol-low Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The name of the LORD has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20:7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). August 30, 2020 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We have come to the last Sunday in August, and will begin a new academic year that will be as drastically changed as anything we could imagine. Instead of notepads and pens, our children will be committing everything to laptops/tablets, and receiving their education through a combination of in person and online learning. Hopefully, this will not last long, and these kids will be able to interact with their peers on a more personal level, when the health crisis has come to an end. In spite of the concerns over health issues, most parents, educators, mental health experts and others, recognize that their children need to have social interaction with other children to properly develop. This is why homeschooled children benefit from coming together for extra educational and social activities with others. Over the years, medical professionals have found great benefit in the human touch for their patients, whether it is as simple as shaking hands when they meet them, or therapeutic massage. Children with developmental disabilities suffered terribly in institutions that isolated them, and until the reforms in this country, treated them as disposable beings that were to be housed as cheaply as possible. Even animals seek the warmth and companionship of another living being, experiments showed the preference of warmth and touch over food. In our Faith, we believe that God took on human flesh, in the person of Jesus Christ, so that we could come to know Him, so that the face of the Father could be revealed to all people. This is the greatest point separating Christianity from Judaism, Islam and Jehovah’s Witnesses, that Jesus Christ is truly Human and Truly Divine, that He is God and Man. It is important to recognize this reality, since it is from this Incarnation that our own human dignity has been raised, and through the Resurrection and glorification of Jesus’ body, that our own bodies will be redeemed. But for right now, we focus on the importance of the Flesh of Christ, in its relationship to His mission. For thousands of years, God made Himself known to many people, and the special relationship which He called the Jewish people to was one of making Himself known through prophets and leaders. But even the physical manifestations of Pillars of Fire and Smoke, did not allow us to come to know Him as did the coming of Christ. “If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, ‘Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves.’” (John 14:7-11) Because of the great gift of God Incarnate, we come to know the Father, through the Son. In the Eucharist, we receive the Real Presence of Jesus Christ; we touch Him, we receive Him, we take Him into ourselves and become one with Him. In His Church, we come to know Him through the Gospel and other writings of the Bible, we hear His Word proclaimed, we experience His presence in the priest celebrating the Sacraments, and we experience Him in each other.

As Christians, we are called to participate in a relationship with God, that allows us to experience Him phys-ically, through our senses, through our bodies. In the Church, which we identify as the Body of Christ, we connect with Him on a complete level, the fullness of which will be revealed to us in heaven. Even though we struggle now, because we are unable to stretch out and offer each other the Sign of Peace, we continue to express our longing for Communion, and experience that same Communion in the Eucharist we receive. In the Domestic Church, that smaller part of the whole we know in our families, we are called to experience that Communion. For those who are still able to physically reach out and touch those whom they love, do so. For those who are unable, we all recognize that Christ continues to hold us in His arms, until the day we are all brought together. Pax, Fr. Henry

“In the encyclical Laudato Si,, Pope Francis observed that “the ecological crisis is also a summons to profound interior conversion.” where “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue, it is not an optional or second-ary aspect of our Christian experience ”(no 217). On occasion of the fifth anniversary of the encyclical, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development has announced a year of celebration to encourage the faithful to embrace it’s mes-sage on the care of our common home.
