STAR GUITAR WINS ANOTHER GOLD CUP

Millionaire Star Guitar and jockey Corey Lanerie

winning last week’s $100,000 Gold Cup.

After winning the $100,000 Gold Cup at Delta Downs in 2009, Brittlyn Stables Inc.’s (Evelyn Benoit) Star Guitar finished a very disappointing fourth as the 1-2 wagering favorite in the same race last year. This past Saturday he made amends for that rare loss by rallying past the field under jockey Corey Lanerie to record his second victory in the one-mile test for older Louisiana-bred horses. The tally by Star Guitar, a 6-year-old son of Quiet American, marked his sixth consecutive stakes win and it added another $60,000 to his already bulging bankroll. The bay runner has now won 20 of 26 starts and has earned a staggering sum of $1,425,862. The connections of Star Guitar had to wait a while before celebrating in the winner’s circle last week as the stewards dealt with a jockey’s objection involving second-place finisher My Star Runner. After the review it was found that My Star Runner

had interfered with Heavenville in mid-stretch. He was disqualified and placed fourth. That action moved Eighth At Citypark up to second and Heavenville up to third.

LAWYER TIFFANY PLEADS HER CASE IN MAGNOLIA STAKES

Lawyer Tiffany and jockey Juan Larrosa winning the Magnolia.

Fletcher B. Clement and Dennis Milligan’s 3-year-old filly Lawyer Tiffany snared her first career stakes win last week when she defeated eight rivals in the $100,000 Magnolia Stakes.

Under jockey Juan Larrosa, Lawyer Tiffany drew clear in the stretch to win by three lengths over favored Daphne Angela. Harlies Dreams was another 1-1/2 lengths behind in third.

Three of Lawyer Tiffany’s four career victories have come at Delta Downs. She broke her maiden at Louisiana Downs last September then won a pair of allowance races in Vinton last season before her stakes triumph on Saturday night. Lawyer Tiffany has now won four of 10 starts and amassed $169,132 in total earnings.

Fans can look for the daughter of Pure Prize to possibly show up in this year’s Louisiana Premier Night Distaff on February 4. Lawyer Tiffany took part in last year’s LAPN Starlet as a 3-year-old where she finished third to Cat’s Production.

HEBERT GETS CLOSER TO MCMAHON IN THE JOCKEY STANDINGS

Two-time Delta Downs leading jockey Tracy Hebert.

After recording a riding double last Thursday and scoring four wins total for the week, Tracy Hebert has drawn within three wins of leading jockey C. J. McMahon. Through the first three weeks of the season McMahon has ridden 15 winners while Hebert’s mounts have made it to the winner’s circle 12 times. Following the top pair of riders as the third week of the season gets underway on Wednesday are Diego Saenz (11 wins), Gerard Melancon (11), Richard Eramia (7), Kevin Smith (7), Don Simington (7), Ismael Corrales (6), John Jacinto (5), Jansen Melancon (4).

A total of five different jockeys recorded riding doubles last week. They included Don Simington (Wednesday), Tracy Hebert (Thursday), Gerard Melancon (Friday), and Ismael Corrales and Billy Patin (Saturday).

BOURGEOIS INCHES CLOSER TO 2,000 WINS

Keith Bourgeois sent out two winners last week, which brings his career total 1,995 training wins for his career. Bourgeois saddled Corey’s Red Boy before he won last Thursday’s fourth race, a 6-1/2 furlong claimer. Then on Saturday night he sent out Mis Avie in the ninth race. Mis Avie, a late running gray filly, got her second win of the season in the one-mile claimer and placed Bourgeois just five wins shy of the 2,000 plateau.

RICHEY AND HOUSE NOW TIED AT THE TOP

AMONG TRAINERS Through the first three weeks of the current season at Delta Downs there is a two-way tie for leading trainer. Tony Richey and Brian House have each seen five of their horses make it to the winner’s circle. Incredibly there are six trainers in a tied for third-place in the trainer standings with four wins each. They include Sam Breaux, Keith Bourgeois, Shane Wilson, Charles Hukill, Brett Brinkman and

Patrick Devereaux, Jr. Scott Gelner and Preston Adams round out the top 10 conditioners as they are tied for ninth place with three wins each. As far as training multiples go, there were two of them accomplished during last week’s action at Delta Downs. Ex-jockey C. J. Woodley won two races on the Wednesday card and Kevin D. Martin had two wins on Friday night.

JLF WINNING TRAINER FINISHES THIRD IN

$5 MILLION BC CLASSIC

2011 Jean Lafitte winning trainer Kelly Breen.

Trainer Kelly Breen’s career has been on the rise in recent years and the results of last weekend’s $5 million Breeders’Cup Classic (Gr. I) will only serve to enhance his resume further. Breen, who will most likely saddle his third $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot starter next week with Jean Lafitte winner My Adonis, finished third

in the BC Classic with River On Ice at Churchill Downs.

The 30-1 Morning line longshot, who gave Breen his first Belmont Stakes win back in June, rallied strongly under jockey Garret Gomez to get the show spot behind Drosselmeyer and runner-up Game On Dude. My Adonis will attempt to showcase Breen’s conditioning talents even more when he goes postward in the Jackpot. A win would mark Breen’s first in the $1,000,000 grade III offering.

West Side Bernie (black cap) finishing second to Big Drama in the

2008 edition of the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot.

In 2008 Breen’s trainee West Side Bernie ran second to stakes record holder and eventual Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion Big Drama. Last year Breen saw his charge Sweet Ducky finish fourth to Gourmet Dinner in the season’s richest race.
