Message from Jim Knight UK Minister of State for Schools and Learners “1001 Inventions offers a whole series of remedies and education for the rest of us. It is very important for the whole country to understand the hugely positive impact that Muslim inventors have had on the World and for Muslims to take pride in it.”

Message from the Chairman Professor Salim T S Al‐Hassani “On behalf of our global team I am delighted to present this overview report on the ‘1001 Inventions’ Books for Schools project for 2008.

Thanks to the generous and international support of sponsors we are honoured to report that over 6,800 books have now been gifted to schools, academic institutions and decision makers in the United Kingdom, United States and the Middle East. We consider this a major milestone in our educational campaign but this is still only a very small step on a hugely ambitious journey to have this book in every school and in every home. Through the sale of the book we have reached vast number of readers from all over the world. I am delighted to mention that the 1001 Inventions book is being translated into Turkish and Arabic and there are plans to translate it to seven more languages. Together with the book we despatched educational posters and school activity packs. Out of active engagement with the schools and working closely with the QCA, we developed a joint programme for Curriculum Enrichment and, as a result of this, yet another project has emerged. City 1250 is an educational tool using a virtual Muslim city in the year 1250 where great inventors and scholars dwell and with whom visitors can interact and learn from their Ancient Wisdom. The most recent recognition of the book was made at the UK Houses of Parliament where the 1001 Inventions exhibition was hosted for one week starting with a reception held by the Minister for schools, Jim Knight MP who expressed admiration and made statements of support. This was followed by further recognition at the United Nations, New York, when world leaders were given complimentary copies at a display situated at the delegates’ entrance. I would like to take this opportunity to also thank all our volunteers including all contributors, writers and editors of the 1001 Inventions book who, like myself, are unpaid and receive neither royalties nor any kind of financial return from the sale of the books. I look forwards to your continued support.” Professor Salim T S Al‐Hassani Chairman ‐ Foundation for Science, Technology & Civilisation (FSTC)

1. Books for Schools Project Overview 1001 Inventions is a groundbreaking global educational initiative exploring the Muslim contributions to building the foundations of Modern Civilisation. Launched in March 2006 with backing from various sponsors including the British Government, 1001 Inventions has since achieved global success with over 400,000 people visiting its exhibitions and over 25,000 copies of the acclaimed book in circulation. The book is considered essential reading and contains 370 beautifully illustrated and easy to read pages with over a thousand years of Muslim contributions to our World. In the UK schools have begun teaching the 1001 Inventions classroom activity packs and our educational posters are being used in schools around the world. The Books for Schools project is an international educational sponsorship programme which provides an opportunity for private individuals, companies and government organisations to participate in helping promote 1001 Inventions. Our ultimate objective is simple, to have the 1001 Inventions book used in every school and educational institution around the world! As a start and with your vital support we aim to distribute 100,000 copies of the book free of cost to schools, universities, libraries and research centres on our database. This large scale distribution of the 1001 inventions book will provide greater access to this knowledge of Muslim contributions to the world, so that it can be studied and appreciated by both Muslims and non‐Muslims globally. This book clearly dispels the myth of the so called Dark Ages, commonly referred to as the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the European Renaissance. Outcomes:

• Bring to the public domain the shared heritage of modern civilisation, and how the Golden Age of Science and Technology was rooted in different cultures, those of Muslims, Jews and Christians working together side by side for nearly a 1000 years.

• Strengthen and deepen social cohesion through collaboration between Muslim and non‐Muslim educators, teachers, advisers and policy makers.

• Provide stronger intellectual foundations for Muslims (male and female) to reassert their identity as future pioneers of human civilisation.

• Encourage wider participation in the study of science, engineering and technology and promote the awareness of its career opportunities.

• Offer guidance, exemplifications and perspectives for faith schools as well as community schools seeking to interpret the curriculum flexibly and appropriately.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London with Elizabeth Woodcock, Co‐Editor 1001 Inventions

In the United Kingdom 2,480 sponsored 1001 inventions books have been distributed to schools and over 450 to institutions and decision makers. Internationally over 3,881 books were gifted on behalf of sponsors in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

Our Distribution Methodology Step 1 – Database: We maintain our own database of schools and educational institutions and maintain a continuous process of growing our lists. Step 2 – Form: Using our Sponsor‐A‐Book form, we collect details of sponsors who want books sent on their behalf. Sponsors agree which city, country and type of educational institution and then agree to pay for the book and postage. Step 3 – Customisation: We produce a customised covering letter designed for the sponsored books to be sent to each institution. The book and various educational inserts such as the 1001 Inventions Teachers Packs are packaged by our staff. Step 4 – Distribution: The sponsored books are posted by recorded delivery and each school or institution is contacted ensure receipt. Step 5 – On Going Support: We provide schools with our contact information and add them to our newsletter mailing list to keep them updated with information on 1001 Inventions and future activities. Some schools have since ordered our Set of 10 large educational posters. 8. City1250 and UK Curriculum Enrichment Programme FSTC has launched a Curriculum Enrichment Programme (CEP) aimed at developing a campaign to enrich the present UK National Curriculum, making it more balanced, more inclusive and more accurate through incorporating the Muslim contributions made in Science and Technology alongside those of other cultures. The CEP project involves a collaborative programme with the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA) and the Association for Science Education (ASE). It is known as the Cultural Understanding in Science Project (CUSP) and the first project released to schools in 2008 was City 1250. City 1250 is a case study working with UK schools as a pilot scheme to examine the feasibility and feedback from teachers and pupils. The educational resources include the 1001 inventions Book, the interactive Teachers’ Packs, Educational Posters Sets, Teachers’ Activity Sheets and a DVD video on a mystery visit to the City 1250.

ASE Global & 1001 Inventions City 1250

ASE Global team has developed colourful and innovative resources including City 1250. In this activity, students watch a short film (approx 7 mins) in which 4 teenagers discuss their forthcoming year on the (fictional) reality TV show City 1250. Each teenager tells of their worries about living in a reconstructed city in the Islamic world in the year 1250.

.

Students then use the resources provided to discover how the science and technology of the time addresses each of the teenagers’ worries. They learn about the advances of Muslim scientists in eight vital fields, and consider how their work influenced future scientists.

One of the most respected online newspapers ‘The Times’ selected 1001 Inventions: Discover the Muslim Heritage in Our World as one of its featured books for Summer 2008. . "The Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) has produced a beautiful catalogue '1001 Inventions: How Muslim Civilisation Shaped The World.' It reminds us just how the Middle East, North Africa and Al Andalus catalysed many of the trappings of modern life. An immensely useful corrective to our Greco‐Roman‐Renaissance sense of Western Civilisation " The Times Summer Books: The Past by Bettany Hughes

Discover 1000 years of missing history! by Maha Youssuf, 04 March 2008

My view of 1001 Inventions: Muslim Heritage in Our World, written by Salim T. S. al‐Hassani (Mechanical Engineering, UMIST, Manchester‐UK). Hon. Chairman Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilization, UK . Ever bothered to learn about the true origins of code breaking, the three Course Meals, treatment through music, cappuccino, archs‐ torpedoes, trick devices, spas, perfumes, musical instruments, cameras and many more of our modern life essentials and luxuries??!! The minute I started reading 1001 Inventions: The Muslim Heritage in Our World, written by Salim T. S. al‐Hassani (chief editor); Elizabeth Woodcock, and Dr. Rabah Saoud (co‐editors), couldn’t put it down before I was done with all of its chapters. It’s neither religious, nor politically motivated, but an unquestionably important book that unfolds myriads of secrets and facts about our daily life matters, ranging from home remedies to astronomical discoveries and physical or chemical

observations, the foundations of which were laid by Muslims but were mistakenly attributed to the Renaissance. Those of you who watched the BBC’s Islamic History of Europe, or What the Muslims Did for Us, can figure out much of what the book is about. It’s more of a guidebook taking you on a journey through 7 marvelously organised chapters detailing numerous state of the art inventions by Muslim Scholars, Scientists, Physists, and Fashionists. It’s some sort of an exhibition displaying the achievements of a 1000 years of missing history, depicting real manuscripts from the Muslims Golden Civilization in which they included their eye witness accounts of life at their times, together with excerpts from Western Books, and speeches of iconic figures in various fields, endorsing the Muslims’ life‐enhancing contributions to this world and the fine touch they left in each and every aspect of our modern life. Although it’s a 2006 release, the acclaimed work, published by the Foundation for Science Technology and Civilization (UK), is still touring the world, visiting international museums, and attending global conferences on cultural interaction and religious tolerance, drawing the attention of a variety of world organisations as well as political, religious and cultural icons to the groundbreaking inventions of the Muslim Civilization. It was even endorsed by Tony Blair, the Ex British Premier at a special meeting of Arab ambassadors. 1001 Inventions: The Muslim Heritage in Our World, is not just a book, it’s a campaign that includes an education program, a website, and an exhibition which was first held in Manchester, England, and was attended by over 80,000 people in the first three months of its launch. The book, which triggered a great boom in the Western World, especially in the UK sold out its first print run in no time. The first edition, however, had a few typo, grammatical, and spelling mistakes, that were corrected in the second edition. In my opinion, no other book could do greater justice to the Muslim heritage than did 1001 Inventions: The Muslim Heritage in Our World. It’s a bit lengthy coffee‐table book, so don’t expect to finish it in one sitting, but it’s a marvelous read that worth the time you’ll invest in it. . Shockingly Brilliant and Absorbing! by an Amazon.co.uk Customer, 19 January 2008 A brilliantly compiled and gripping encyclopedia of knowledge, which will have the reader wanting to know more. This book is essential reading for students and for those seeking to understand Islam and the Muslim peoples. A must read in my humble opinion for anyone who is interested in history, science and culture. I just could not put it down! Informative would be an understatement.. It's got quality written all over it. Made from quality glossy paper, it's definitely worth the price I paid for it, and I intend to buy more copies for my family and friends. It's beautifully illustrated, full of wonderful photographs, maps and diagrams. It's main theme and core is highlighting Muslim Scientists, Thinkers and Artists, and their contributions in our world. Its simple layout makes it a most enjoyable read. What really intrigued me was that `The Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC)' has authenticated, and published this book. It contains an ocean of facts, especially things we take for granted in our daily lives:

• Who would have thought that it was through early Muslim advancements in science and culture that went on to lay the foundations/cornerstones of the European Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and modern Western society.

• Who would have thought it was in translation from Arabic, not the original Greek, that knowledge of Greek philosophy became prominent in Christian thought.

• Who would have thought that Western mathematics are based on Arabic numerals and calculations. Never!! I hear you all shout? Sadly I thought the same.. Truth can be stranger than fiction, and very hard to stomach.

• Who would have thought that `Coffee' is actually a Muslim discovery, and the word is derived from the Arabic word Al‐Qawah (Café).

• Who would have thought that the word `Checkmate' is actually Persian in origin and a corruption of Shah Mat (The king is dead).

• Who would have thought that paper and gun powder was brought to Europe by Muslims via the Muslim lands.

• Who would have thought that the first Libraries, Hospitals and Universities were created by the Muslims.

• Who would have thought that it was the Muslims who first brought and cultivated in Europe many crops and fruits from far lands as China and India, ranging from oranges, bananas, rice, cotton, sugar cane, silk and spices.

• Unbelievably, the list goes on!

This book I am not ashamed to admit has managed to remove many prejudices that I held previously against Islam and its contribution to human life and the world. It has given me a whole new outlook to Islam, and has brought about a sense of respect, admiration and gratitude to all those great Muslim contributions that have brought about the quality of life that most of us take for granted. After reading this book, I'm sure most people like me will be convinced that Western civilization owes a huge dept to the Islamic culture. Without their contribution, sacrifices and efforts, we in the West would probably still be living in the dark ages.

14. UK Houses of Parliament, Westminster http://www.1001inventions.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.viewSection&intSectionID=569 1001 Inventions was given the privilege of exhibiting at the UK Houses of Parliament, from 13th‐17th October 2008. This taster exhibition showcased the likes of Al‐Jazari’s Elephant Clock and Scribe Clock as well as his famous water pump raising machine. The exhibition covered FSTC’s pioneering projects such as the 1001 Inventions Curriculum Enrichment Programme (CEP) and Cultural Understanding in Science Project (CUSP).

The exhibition was exclusively for Ministers (MPs) and not open to the general public. Formally opened by Jim Knight MP, UK Minister for Schools and Learning, on the 15th October. Through the exhibition, 1001 Inventions aims to raise awareness of the contribution the Muslim world has made in building the foundations of modern day civilisation; to promote cultural understanding and social cohesion; and prevent violent extremism.

Muslim Heritage Conference: Social Cohesion. http://www.1001inventions.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.viewSection&intSectionID=573 Jim Knight MP, the UK Minister for Schools and Learning and Sir Roland Jackson, the Chief Executive of the British Association for the Advancement of Science addressed invited delegates only at the ‘Muslim Heritage in our World: Social Cohesion’ conference on the 15th October at the Hoare Memorial Hall, Church House, Westminster organised by FSTC. Presentations by leading academics, professors and historians countered the 1000 years of historical amnesia which has ignored scientific and technological contributions from other cultures to our present civilization, creating a false sense of Euro‐centric pride at the expense of other world cultures. The conference examined how addressing this situation can be used as a catalyst to help policymakers promote better cultural understanding and social cohesion. Invitees were selected from a list of names given by government, QCA, ASE, MHAG, The BA and from our

own contacts. The press and media were present although not in full force as this was mainly an internal parliament event. The most important official message from the minister which was quoted in the press was “Every child must be taught the scientific contributions Muslims made to our society”. It is worth mentioning that the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson also visited the display. He was so impressed that he held the 1001 inventions book over his chest and posed for photographs. He also said that his grandfather was a Muslim and he was proud of his heritage. Of course it is noteworthy to mention that he belongs to the opposition party. Hence our project has the support of both political parties. See Appendix 2 for full update. Outcomes of the event: - By far the most important outcome is the official recognition of the government of the need to include

our material in the National Curriculum. - We now have a long strategic relationship with the educational policy makers that will result in the

endorsement of our educational products. - The story of the missing 1000 years of Islamic Civilisation has entered into the centre of decision making,

the UK parliament. Also the reception and conference were held at another very important place; Church house which is effectively the Christian parliament, where the Anglican synod meets. This is historically significant as it is a first that the names of Islam and Muslims have been mentioned in such a good light in this building.

- Declaration of the University of Manchester of its intention to set up an academic Centre for Muslim Civilisation in our World.

- PR for the message and marketing for the 1001 Inventions book. - Having leverage from this endorsement to pave the way for US and other countries. - Immediately after this we received an invitation from the European (EU/EC) Parliament to give a

presentation to 60 MEPs from the Committee for Education and Culture. - Recruiting more key International associates. - Declaring the onset of an International version of our present MHAG.

17. Jeddah Conference

Muslim Heritage in the Knowledge‐Economy Conference in Jeddah

Click here for the video file of the conference.

During "The First Regional Conference on the Knowledge Economy" at Dar Al‐Hekma College in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January 12‐13, 2008, attended by over 300 experts and professionals as well as several VIPs, Professor Salim Al‐Hassani delivered a key note speech in which he presented the touring exhibition "1001 Inventions" and the work undertaken by Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) to promote Muslim Heritage.

Departing from the fact that the history of science and civilization, as taught by many institutions in the West, often fails to include about 1000 years of Islamic heritage and civilization, Salim Al‐Hassani remarks, while speaking at Dar Al‐Hekma College in Jeddah on January 14, 2008, that "the Renaissance couldn't have happened out of nothing (…) In the West, there is total ignorance of the contributions of other civilizations. Did modern civilization really rise from nothing?"

Al‐Hassani explained how many Western discoveries are of Muslim origin. He stated that there was a lost age of Muslim innovation and invention that Muslims are not communicating to the West. Further more, that these Muslim contributions are not included in the the history syllabus or textbooks either.

Focussing on a contrroversial issue, that of women in Muslim society, he remarked that during Umar ibn Al‐Khattab's reign in 634 H, Muslim women took the lead in different ways. The Caliph Umar appointed Samra bint Nuhayk Al‐Asadiyya as a market inspector in Makkah and Ash‐Shifa bint Abdullah as an administrator of the market in Madinah. "Later, Ash‐Shifa was appointed as the head of health and safety in Basra," said Al‐Hassani.

Al‐Qarawiyyin, a spiritual and educational center (1st University in history) that led the Muslim world for over 1200 years, was founded and built in Fez, Morocco, in 859 CE by a young princess, Fatima Al‐Fihri, who migrated with her father Mohammed Al‐Fihri from Qairawan (Tunisia) to Fez.

"Fatima vowed to spend her entire inheritance on building a mosque suitable for her community. This remarkable story is a typical example shedding some light on the role and contribution of women to Muslim civilization. Such a role is the subject of widely held misconceptions about Islam," said Al‐Hassani.

In 1993, Prince Charles said in a public speech at the Oxford Center of Islamic Studies that if there was much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there was also much ignorance

about the impact of Western culture and civilization on the Islamic world.

"It is a failure which stems, I think, from the straitjacket of history which we have inherited. The medieval Islamic world, from Central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where scholars and men of learning flourished," said Prince Charles. "But because we have tended to see Islam as the enemy of the West, as an alien culture, society and system of belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own history."

MASDAR FSTC has started a most ambitious Data‐ Base project; MASDAR, launching of a long awaited and strategically significant electronic reference library. So far we have included 30,000 references on Muslim Heritage in Science. When this is complete it will be the best resource for researchers into the subject and will be unique in this world. As part of this effort, we are training young people to be acquainted with Muslim Heritage through learning and developing Timelines for each subject taught in Schools. This will provide a set of educational and research tools to widen the knowledge and make it easily accessible.
