Initially using data services from other Telcos
National fibre footprint since 2005
Developing DWDM network
Layer3 Routed network implemented over our optical network
– AARNet3 & AARNet4 100G backbone...
Some services from other carriers for access & diversity (&
international) where our DWDM doesn't reach
National fibre network spans ~ 7000km (70ms RTT), moving
to 9000km (90ms RTT)

Alien/ foreign Wavelengths
Someone else provides the Amps & ROADMs
We provide the transponders that talk over other the “Alien
wavelength” Channels
Disaggregation. Open line system (someone else's)
Motivation: no available fibres.
Other carrier knows little about our services
Like a foreigner – see that they're alive, but little else.
Troubleshooting can be more complex
Our savings: we don't need Amps & enclosures.
Other carrier can provide service with little/no capital cost. - just the
wavelength opportunity cost.

Long inland link had marginal performance and frequent
errors
Decision to re-generate at “Blackwater” site

Considerable OSNR improvement (> 16 dB). Plenty of
margin!
