WHAT YOU’LL FIND INSIDE

Every morning when I look outside and see the sun making magic out of the

surroundings here, I realize how blessed I am to call this place home.

I love it here for what’s on the outside—the spectacular

mountain ranges, the rippling rivers and the abundance of wildlife. I also delight in all that’s on the inside too—the art and music culture, the shop-ping, the museums rich with lo-cal history as well as the amaz-ing people in the Valley, that I’m

happy to call my neighbors. This winter’s edition of our

bi-annual 101 Amazing Things to Do magazine, marks our sixth successful issue of en-riching people’s lives, as it in-cludes something for everyone.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the

magazine as much as we enjoy reminding you that we have so much to celebrate here – whether you are a local or a vis-itor, we would like to welcome you to winter in the Wood River Valley and hope you will enjoy it with us from beginning to end!

Sachertorte or a chocolate croissant from the nearby Konditorei for a sweet treat you can’t fi nd just anywhere.

A LA MODE1

For adults only

The Hailey Public Library offers an Adult Book Club Discussion one Thursday each month at 6 p.m. This year’s books center

around Western fi ction. Jan. 16’s discussion focuses on Leslie Marmon Silko’s “Cere-

mony”; Feb. 20, James Welch’s “Fools Crow”; and March 20, Willa Cather’s “The Professor’s House.” The library has copies of each book for readers to check out.

Track it

Wildlife’s daily soap operas are often etched in the snow. Head out a few days after fresh snow in Adams Gulch or near Bak-

er Creek, Prairie Creek or Galena Lodge to check out the animal tracks. You may spot where a vole has run across the snow only to be nabbed by a hawk. Or where otters have been sledding down a riverbank.

Local naturalist Ann Christensen occasionally leads animal tracking trips for the Environmental Resource Center. Go to ercsv.org or call 208-726-4333 for more information.

Some of the world’s best fi lms focusing on outdoor sports and adventure travel will be shown Friday and Saturday evenings,

Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, at the nexStage Theatre, 120 S. Main St., Ketchum.

Among the fi lms receiving rave reviews this year is “North of the Sun,” which features cold-water surfi ng (brrrrrrr!) by Norwegian surfers who found time to ride a few understand-ably uncrowded waves while cleaning up a ton of garbage from remote beaches on an Arctic bay off the coast of Norway. The fi lm focuses not just on their breathtaking experience against the backdrop of the Northern Lights but also on the wider impact of garbage, even in remote, uninhabited environments.

The Sawtooth Botanical Garden will stage its popular Bug Zoo Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the garden,

which is located a few miles south of Ketchum at Highway 75 and Gimlet Road.

Youngsters can examine tarantulas, walking sticks and other exotic insects up close and personal, try on a pair of bug’s eyes to see just what an insect sees, and participate in a variety of arts and crafts projects to teach them about the lives of bugs.

The zoo will be open to the public during afternoons and weekends for a couple of weeks following the actual festival. Information: sbgarden.org or 208-726-9358.

Raise a cheer for 20!

This year’s Galena Benefi t on Saturday, Jan. 25, in the Limelight Room of the Sun Valley Inn, will toast the 20th anniversary

of the year Teresa Heinz and the community rallied to save the rustic ski and mountain bike lodge.

The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will feature dinner, auction items and dancing to Boise’s High Street Band, which is always a big hit with its zoot suits and music that takes dancers through the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

The evening will be dedicated to Bonni Curran, who with her husband Peter was a huge supporter of the lodge and the trails. Curran was killed when her bicycle collided with a truck on Ketchum’s Main Street last summer.

This year, discover whatSymbiotic Systems Advanced Therapeutic

Reflexology can do for you.Are you familiar with Reflexology? Let’s let a respected

medical center explain the benefits of reflexology.

Symbiotic Systems ReflexologyCelebrating 11 years serving the Wood River Valley!

Mark Cook, ART (regd): (208) 788-2012

“The Heart Center at St. Rita’s offers open-heart patients refl exology as a complimentary therapy to help speed recovery and reduce discomfort. (Helps all post-op conditions)

Refl exology therapy strengthens and supports the body’s own healing process. The therapy,a safe non-invasive health practice, applies the principle that refl ex areas in the feet and hands correspond to all parts of the body, including glands, organs and total body systems.Stimulating these refl exes can help many health problems in a natural way. The act of applyingpressure to refl ex areas results in the reduction of stress, which promotes positive changes in the body. It can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium and encourage healing.”

In addition to the endorsement of major medical centers, (see my “health benefi ts” page on my website at www.refl ex4usa.com) the National Foundation For Women Legislators (your

female elected representatives) passed a resolution in 2012 encouraging the use of therapeuticrefl exology as an effective means to improve a woman’s health and wellness. In doing so, they cited their own personal experience, the safety of refl exology and the fact that over 300 clinical trials exist supporting the effectiveness of refl exology. One major clinical trial determined footrefl exology was 93% effective in helping 63 different conditions. What if one of those conditions was yours? This is the most powerful aspect of refl exology. You come in for one concern and every majorsystem in your body is tuned up. All at the same time and all at the same cost. Refl exology is the onlyhealing modality that works this way.

Nordic Town USA

Celebrate all things Nordic when Nordic Town USA stages the Sun Valley Nordic Festival 2014 Jan. 25-Feb. 2.

The event kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the free Ski the Rails beginning at 10 a.m. at Serenade Lane on Ketchum’s southern outskirts—volunteers will be handing out refreshments, pep talks—maybe even a massage or two—as skiers ski 11 miles from Ketchum to Hailey on the groomed bike path.

The annual Paw ’n Pole—a family-friendly event pairing dogs with skiers and snowshoers—will be held at noon Sunday, Jan. 26, at Croy Nordic in Hailey.

Skiers can take part in a Skiers Breakfast/Brunch from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Smiley Creek Lodge north of Ketchum. There’ll be a snowshoe tour focusing on the history of the Sawtooth Wilderness at Alturas Lake Ski Area north of Galena Summit from noon to 2 p.m. that day, while a ski tour focuses on the winter wildlife of the Sawtooths from noon to 2 p.m. at Park Creek Ski Area seven miles west of Stanley.

Follow that up with an Avalanche Awareness and Safety work-shop at Stanley Town Square from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and a Skiers Special Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening at the Stanley Sluice.

Meanwhile, spectators can watch Paralympic biathletes pair skiing with shooting at Lake Creek Nordic Olympic/Paralympic Training Center Stadium on Monday, Jan. 27, and Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Skiers are invited to ski with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foun-dation’s elite Gold Team athletes at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 29 at Lake Creek. If you’ve got some ummph left, ski the Harriman Trail with The Vamps coaches, many who were Olympians, U.S. Ski Team members and American Birkebeiner champs, on Jan. 30.

Dig out your vintage skis for a Vintage Ski Wander along Trail Creek at the Sun Valley Nordic Center Jan. 30 and then take in the fast-paced Downtown Jam/Nordic Town USA Sprints from 4-8 p.m. Jan. 30 across from the Ketchum Post Offi ce. There’ll be food and beer and even a snowbike competition.

Saturday, Feb. 1, will see nearly a thousand skinny skiers tak-ing part in the SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour from Galena Lodge to the SNRA Headquarters on Highway 75. The race will be followed by live music at 7 p.m. in the Sun Valley Center for the Arts fi eld in downtown Ketchum.

A SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour Demo Day will conclude the week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sun Valley Nordic Center.

Skinny skiing

Ostensibly, they call Nordic skiing skinny skiing because you do it on skis barely an inch wide. But it also has a reputation

as being a bun-buster when it comes to exorcising those calories you racked up in one of those pastries from The Konditeroi.

Ski The Elevator at Sun Valley Nordic or Psycho at Galena Lodge if you’re up for a rip-roaring schuss downhill. Or take it easy on one of the loops out Croy Nordic in Hailey.

Dogs are welcome on trails surrounding the SNRA seven miles north of Ketchum, as well as Billy’s Bridge and a couple trails outside Galena Lodge. They’re also welcome at small loops at Sun Valley Nordic, Croy and, of course, the entire bike path from Ketchum to Bellevue, which you and your dog can ski for free. There are 32 kilometers of trails at Alturas Lake 34 miles north of Ketchum and Park Creek 65 miles north of Ketchum, available to ski with a donation of $5 requested.

Rentals are available at Sun Valley Nordic, Galena and outdoor shops in Ketchum and Hailey. Lessons are available at Galena and Sun Valley Nordic.

Wagons ho!

Check out Ketchum’s magnifi cent Big Hitch ore wagons at the Ore Wagon Museum near Fifth and East streets in Ketchum.

These tall skinny wagons, which measure up to 16 feet long and weigh 6,400 pounds empty, carried up to 24,000 pounds—that’s 12 tons—of ore and mining supplies as they navigated the precipitous Trail Creek Road between Ketchum and mines in Bayhorse, Clayton, Challis, Bonanza and Custer.

The City of Ketchum trots them out every Labor Day weekend for the annual Wagon Days parade where they’re pulled by a 20-mule team. Shades of the Borax!

Baldy and Dollar slopes

It isn’t enough that “Outside Online” has named Baldy’s Warm Springs one of the “Five Runs You Need to Ride Before You Die.”

Or that Sun Valley has been named the fourth best ski resort around by “SKI Magazine.”

Dollar Mountain is sporting North America’s biggest pipe this year—a 620-foot-long superpipe with 22-foot walls.

And the Sun Valley SnowSports School is introducing a Terrain-Based Learning Program tailored for early learners and intermediate skiers and boarders.

If you need your skis tuned, you might want to check out Pete Lane’s new Wintersteiger mercury machine—one of only 11 in the United States and the only one in Idaho. The machine is de-signed to enhance skiing performance by creating a better grip on hard slopes and keeping edges sharper for a longer period of time.

Family of Woman Film Festival

Zero in on an illiterate Bedouin woman—“Solar Mama”—who learns to make and maintain solar panels at Barefoot Uni-

versity in India. Meet women living in a stilt city on the water in Brazil in “Bay of All Saints.” These fi lms are among fi ve that will be shown March 7-9 at the Sun Valley Opera House as part of the Family of Woman Film Festival.

Launched in 2007 by Friends of UNFPA Board Member Peggy Elliott Goldwyn, the fi lms highlight the struggles women face across the world—from sexual harassment in the U.S. armed services to “Divorce, Iranian Style.” This year’s festival is themed “Women and Education.”

“I can’t promise you Academy Award nominations as yet but we’ll see,” said Goldwyn, noting the awards past fi lms have garnered. “We have fi lms from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the United States, with several fi lmmakers committed to appear.”
