Coordinating 24 countries in a 10:10 campaign, and getting them ready for 10:10:10 has been a wonderful experience so far, and as my former boss liked to put it: “both a challenge and an opportunity”. We are looking forward to more exciting events and thrilling experiences in days and weeks to come.

We are present in countries where cutting down four hundred trees in the very center of the city is still done, or where it is difficult to pass on our message as people have no internet access. And those were just some of the challenges we had to face… But being able to work on three different continents, within three major religions, and with such different walks of life gave us an inspiration that is hard to explain. We are all same as we try to preserve the nature. We are all the same in our efforts to cut carbon. “We all breathe the same air, we all cherish our children’s future…”, as JFK once said.

So what will we be doing on October 10 th this year?

Here is a quick reminder of what we have lined up for 10:10:10 in our hub:

Ten hospitals from Balkan and Adriatic Region will have Reuse, Reduce, Recycle workshops to educate their employees on possibilities and ways of cutting carbon in everyday hospital operations.

Twenty five towns from Mediterranean Region will organize “Clean me up” day – and invite citizens to help clean up parks and playgrounds.

One hundred farms from Central and Eastern Europe region will meet up on e-conference and explore further carbon cutting on a family farm, from composting to using solar and wind energy.

Dear Friends,

Just three more weeks are ahead of us before the Global Day of Doing on October 10th 2010 – the time to act is now! We prepared tons of great news for you (and some reminders too!) so, play some 10:10 music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seHYfYqcQGc&feature=related and read on :

One thousand small and medium enterprises from Russia will organize outdoor workshops for their employees, to educate them on ways of cutting carbon in the office, and to offer incentives for the best “carbon cutters”.

And we have over 10,000 across 24 countries schools helping us with our biggest 10:10:10 project – planting 101010 trees!

The amount of CO2 a tree will offset depends on many factors, such as the type of tree, where it is planted and the amount of room it has to grow. On average, one broad leaf tree will absorb in the region of 1 tonne of carbon dioxide during its full life-time (approximately 100 years). (source http://www.carbonfootprint.com/plantingtrees.html )

Just imagine the positive impact 101 010 trees will have once we plant them together!

Our Tree Planting Challenge is not just for schools! Anyone can join in and plant a tree! You can plant it in your garden, in your local park, or even in a pot on your balcony! Share your tree planting photos and stories with us – e-mail us at [email protected]!

We have more fun stuff lined up for 10:10:10!

Have more ideas for 10:10:10 events? Drops us a line to [email protected], or register your own event on www.350.org

Just entering all these events in 350.org map is a challenge, so please bear with us .

Also, more news to come from Croatia, Serbia and Romania, as we join forces with British Embassies in 10:10:10 event preparations, plus some Hollywood cheer – will Boris the Blade (aka Ivan Tretiak) wear a 10:10 tag on October 10th ? And what will happen on MTV Adria on 10:10:10?

We’ll be joining forces with British Embassy in Ljubljana and Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (many thanks to both parties for all their help!) for a 10:10 travel presentation on September 20th, during the European Mobility Week (http://www.mobilityweek.eu/), an awareness raising campaign aiming at sensibilising citizens to the use of public transport,

cycling, walking and at encouraging European cities to promote these modes of transport and to invest in the new necessary infrastructures.

As for Ljubljana – we are in awe with this beautiful town, and so many positive examples that they share http://www.flickr.com/photos/nektarina/sets/72157624970655706/

Please, take some time to browse through this great photo gallery – it speaks more than a thousand words .

I keep remembering Bill McKibben’s words our US ten tenner Jill shared with us “…we need all hands on deck …” – Ljubljana is the perfect example of that – once you are there, you have a feeling that the entire town truly IS low carbon.

Plus, they have this fancy schmancy web site www.ljubljanapametnomesto.si with an awesome interactive map where you can plant a virtual tree!

To make the whole story complete, a provocative green media, as they call themselves – EcoGuerilla (www.ecoguerilla.com).

Did you know that it takes just 500 empty soda cans to make one bike? Kancelarija za mlade (office for youth) in Obrenovac, Serbia, organized collection of empty cans to promote cycling, and people showed their support by bringing in empty cans! How many bikes they “collected”? We’ll know soon enough!

These amazing cans (and recycling ads) come from a “SuperNatural Expo”

organized by Ecoist in Serbia (ecoist.rs). And yes, we have more

Running on empty!

No, we don't mean the River Phoenix movie... It is 115 days since we became a 10:10 hub – we did a lot, but we know this is just a drop in the ocean – we need to do more – we would like to do so much more.

When we joined 10:10, we were aware that funding this kind of project in Eastern, Central and SouthEast Europe, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Isreal will be hard, almost impossible, but we were ready to give it a try. We recognized the importance of including the developing countries in the carbon cutting process now, not in ten years. We recognized the importance of Russia and its 142 million people – imagine the positive impact if all 142 million cut carbon by 10% in a year!

Our hub covers the area of 28 million square kilometers, on three continents, in 24 countries, and we try to inspire half a billion people to cut carbon every day! You'd think there is a whole army of us in 10:10 hub, but there is just the three of us (and we have other day jobs just to stay afloat – it is not easy, and that is the understatement of the year ).

After 115 days of running on empty, we need your help – if you'd like to help us, or if you can think of anyone who could help us with funding, drop me a line at [email protected] . Thank you.

We will finish with our 10:10 celebrity quote: «More people should drive solar cars», suggested Dario from the elementary school «Ljudevit Gaj» in Krapina. We couldn't agree more!

See you in a week!

Stay tuned for more news in a weeks time!

In the meantime – cut carbon and carry on

Yours truly,

Sandra & 24 country hub
