North Carolina – his father was a doctor

His mother died when he was 3 yrs. old. Raised by grandmother & aunt

Left school at 15 yrs. old & moved to Texas

He worked odd jobs – worked in drug store, on a ranch, & at a bank

Married in 1882 – 1 daughter

Arrested for stealing money from the bank where he worked & sent to prison

Started writing short stories in prison

Served 3 years in prison & changed his name to O. Henry
