SACRAMENTS

As we begin year 6 under Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ (Care for our Common Home), let us

deepen our resolve to his call to action,

“The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family

together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. The

Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or

repents of having created us.”

(Laudato Si #13)

Loving God, Your desire is for our wholeness and well being.

We hold in tenderness and prayer the collective suffering of our world at this time.

We grieve precious lives lost and vulnerable lives threatened.

We ache for ourselves and our neighbors, standing before an uncertain future.

We pray: may love, not fear, go viral.

Inspire our leaders to discern and choose wisely, aligned with the common good.

Help us to practice social distancing and reveal to us new and creative ways

to come together in spirit and in solidarity.

Call us to profound trust in your faithful presence,

You, the God who does not abandon.

Happy Pentecost! This weekend we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit in the forms of wind and fire upon the disciples gathered together in the Upper Room. The disciples were imbued with the Spirit’s 7 gifts: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder and awe, as well as the 9 fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Pentecost celebrates the beginning of the Church. What a beautiful day for us to resume public Masses around the Diocese of Lansing, including at our own parish! Bishop Boyea has called for the reopening of our churches for public worship to 25% capacity beginning this weekend. Masses will resume at their normally scheduled times: 4:30PM on Saturdays and 8:30AM and 10:30AM on Sundays. Over the past two weeks, we have been celebrating public daily Masses at 5% capacity, and they have been going quite smoothly. It has provided us with a helpful learning experience as we have prepared to reopen the Church for Sunday worship. Every week, I have been sending out an update, whether by email message or by postal letter. In my past two messages to you, I have explained at length the new procedures to make our Masses at St. Therese the safest experience possible, so I don’t want to repeat them in this column, except to remind you to wear a mask to Mass. I would like to emphasize the importance of following these protocols and to remind everyone that we are a parish family, not customers at a grocery store. As a world, we have experienced a tremendous amount of change within a very short period of time, and change often causes anxiety, stress and even division. St. Therese Parish has always been known for its welcoming spirit, so let us truly strive to be kind and courteous to one another during these unprecedented times.

Our parish would like to honor all of our graduating high school seniors with an online photo display. Please scan your graduation photograph and send it to Dean Jong at [email protected] by Wednesday. June 3. Please include your name and your high school. If you are unable to scan and send one, please mail a photograph to our parish office as soon as possible.

Our new air conditioning units are operational, just in time for the summer! We have replaced the very old air conditioning units on the roof and have added air conditioning units to the Social Room. Thank you very much to everyone who donated to the Witness to Hope Campaign! With regard to these WTH projects, we are ahead of schedule in completing them, but we are still paying them off. Please remember to follow through with your WTH pledges. I am very grateful for your support.

Next Thursday, June 4, we will resume having Mass at its 6PM time. There will be no Thursday Mass at 8:30AM on Thursday that day. The Rosary will proceed the Thursday evening Mass at 5:30PM. We will need volunteers to lead the Rosary. We will evaluate the popularity of the 6PM Thursday time at a later date.

God bless you, and stay safe,

Fr. John Fain

Our Parish Office will resume normal business hours on Monday, June 1. Hours are Monday - Thursday from 9AM-5PM and Friday from 9AM-12PM. To

ensure the safety of our employees, we will be observing social distancing in the Parish Office.

Religious Education News PLAN C - SHIFT and SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, June 27 from 9am – 12:30pm for our Saturday Outreach to the Stoneleigh Hospice Gardens. Hopefully, by then, you will have your own gardening work done and you will be able to come

out to the Stoneleigh Hospice gardens and chop down and spruce up. This date, being “Plan C,” hopefully we won’t have to go to a “Plan D” or scrap it altogether for the year.

Michigan schools are closed until September! When our Open Doors Tutoring Program re-opens, lots of things will need to change. We will need a much lower student-to-tutor ratio to be effective for the kids. During JUNE, please pray about being a Tutor. See Tutoring as satisfying your hunger and thirst for righteousness/justice/right relationships. Call Katy Rios @ 256-8120, Leslie Ozanich @ 371-1765 or Dave @ 331-5765.

It’s a Tradition! Once again, until Father’s Day, please

save pots, flats and trays after your gardening

for the Giving Tree Farm. A container is

reserved for them at the southeast corner of

the Parish Garage. The disabled will put

them to good use. Thank you!

Our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) RCIA Question of the Week: Why do we celebrate the birthday of the Church on Pentecost Sunday?

RCIA Answer of the Week: In Matthew 16:18, Jesus tells Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my (“ek”-“klesian”) Church.” Bishop Robert Barron, in his Catholicism series, explains that being on the Rock, we all are “called out,”

“Called” by Jesus Christ

“Out” of the realm of sin

Into the one life of Christ (Mystical Body), God’s way of being

For the purpose of transforming the world (“thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”)

At Pentecost, Mary and the disciples (followers) became “apostles” (messengers, missionaries, witnesses) when Christ filled them up with his life through the Holy Spirit and called them out of the locked, upper room into the streets of Jerusalem with the message of Christ risen from the dead.

Happy Birthday to us! Do you believe? RCIA Question Next Week: The Trinity?

Our Adult Faith Formation: Small Discipleship Groups

Next year, a Year of Scripture in the Lansing Diocese, we will be back in the St. Francis Room, face-to-face (although likely socially distanced) with frozen cookies! We’ll focus on Scripture, Scripture, Scripture. We look forward to reading the Word of God, learning about it, praying it, discussing it and sharing its impact on our lives with you in a Small Discipleship Group session.

I’m thinking of offering two (2) separate tracks thru Lent 2021 – “beginner’s” session (on a day to be determined) and a “beginner’s plus” session (on Tuesdays).

Please make room for these sessions in your 2020-21 calendar.

SCRIP will soon be available

following 8:30 & 10:30 am

masses on Sundays. Sales

will begin on June 7 and

continue through July.

Please go to the social room to make purchases.

Remember to be kind and follow social

distancing protocol. Thank you for your support!

A Note from your DRE: Pentecost Sunday! What a perfect day to begin Sunday Masses again. I keep hearing about how it’s not “normal” Mass but there is one thing that is constant and consistent and true - Jesus in the Eucharist. I’m so excited to get back to Sunday worship! If you are choosing to remain home and worship from a distance, know that you are in my prayers! God bless your first week of June. It finally feels like summer!

Sacraments Update: The Sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation will be moved to this fall. More information and tentative dates will be determined and shared soon. Keep your eyes out for emails and bulletin updates as we plan for these two wonderful events. Thank you for your patience! I’m reminded that we wait for many things in life - we wait for mail when we order online, we wait for our orders when we eat out, we wait for birthdays and weddings, and so much more. Although we didn’t plan it this way initially, as we wait a little longer for First Holy Communion and Confirmation, we do so knowing that Jesus is there and ready when we are. The Holy Spirit is here with us, just waiting for that special day for our youth. And I look forward to the day we can celebrate together!
