A few weeks from now, Nell Postell plansto be in Orlando, Fla., working on a Habitatfor Humanity house for an underprivilegedfamily.

Shes taken part in framing 11 Habitat-build homes sponsored by the NationalAssociation of Realtors, traveling as far asCalifornia for one homebuilding endeavorand missing the yearly event just twice.

Such is Postells workday schedule, at oncefocused on helping clients buy and sell prop-erties while attuned to professional andcommunity service.

The Realtors notable 34-year career withCarolina One Real Estate and its predeces-sors culminated this fall in her being named2012 South Carolina Realtor of the Year.

She says the award, bestowed by her peersat the South Carolina Realtors convention inSavannah, came as a total surprise. It wasquite an honor, she says, to be chosen byher fellow Realtors.

I have been so fortunate, she says.Her award follows two previous honors

from the state group: 2007 DistinguishedService Award and Educator of the Year in1998.

Few professionals can match Postellsprodigious involvement in real estate policy,education and oversight matters.

Just a taste: She is a National Association of Realtors

director in the midst of a three-year termthrough 2014, her second stint as boardmember. She has served on 18 committeesfrom risk management to cultural diversityand taught 24 courses on everything fromfarming to how to buy and sell a house.

Postell was S.C. Association of Realtorspresident in 2002, served in numerous otherposts and lists 28 committees and boardswith the association and its EducationFoundation.

The agent was on the Charleston TridentAssociation of Realtors board from 1988 to2001, Realtor of the Year in 1990 and tookpart in 21 committees or boards.

In the community, Postell has been a cityof Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals site

design member since 2003, was committeechair for the Charleston Wine and FoodFestival 2009-11 and has been involved withthe National Trust for Historic Preservation,Middleton Place Foundation, PreservationSociety of Charleston and S.C. AquariumSociety. She also served on the 150thanniversary celebration of St. MatthewsLutheran Church.

Today despite her packed schedule, shefinds time to dote on her two grandchildrenRiley Padgett Postell and Chase Hamlin

Postell. She has a son R. Arnold Postell II,owner of Edible Gardens and a daughterHelen Postell Huston, who is in regimemanagement with ACMS in Charleston.

Whats remarkable is Postell started in thereal estate field in 1978 as a single motherraising two small children. She had modestjob experience up til then, outside of work-ing at the phone company.

Postell chose real estate because of theflexibility it offered while bringing up herchildren. I didnt want to miss anything

they were involved in at Porter-Gaud(School), she says. Both are Porter-Gaudgraduates; her daughter went on to theCollege of Charleston while her son gradu-ated from the University of Georgia.

Postell entered the real estate businesswith OShaughnessy Real Estate. Her ex-husband was a homebuilder andOShaughnessy was marketing some of hishomes. From there, she has stayed with thesame company, although its been throughmergers and affiliation changes to becomeCarolina One Real Estate.

The secret to her success, she says, is con-tinuing education. You cant stop learning inthis business. To be ready to talk to buyersand sellers, you have to be on top.

She keeps abreast of the latest develop-ments in real estate, made easier throughher contacts with NAR. That helped her getan inkling a couple years early that the hous-ing market was poised to slide. I saw thehandwriting on the wall.

A native of the Pleasant Hill community ofnorthwestern Georgetown County, Postellmoved to the Charleston area in 1960.

She has lived in West Ashley for decades,now residing in the plush Sandhurst neigh-borhood; and has worked west of the Ashleyfor her entire real estate career, first on St.Andrews Boulevard and now Orleans Road.

Postell says that signs point to improvingreal estate scene in the Charleston area still a buyers market overall but with intensecompetition at specific price points depend-ing on the part of town. Home lots, too,have accelerated in value in certain placesfrom Seaside Plantation on James Island toGrassy Creek in Mount Pleasant andBeresford Creek in Berkeley County.

Looking ahead, Postell foresees risinginterest rates, which could bring on a sellersmarket. Mortgage rates are as low as 3 per-cent on Federal Housing Administrationloans. Thats giving away money, she says.Rates are going to start trending back up.

Postell, who has closed on 24 home salesthis year, is succinct about her future. Keepselling.
