Graham earned his first winner on July 1, 2003 at River Downs inCincinnati, Ohio and soon became a sought-after rising star at FairGrounds in New Orleans that winter and then Arlington Park inChicago during the summer of 2004.

With limited opportunities in his native Ireland, Graham relocated toLexington, Ky. in 2002 and quickly gained a reputation as ahardworking exercise rider at Keeneland Race Course. The next year,he obtained his jockey’s license.

He is recognized by his peers as a determined, yet humble, competitor.

A victory in the Whitney Handicap with Fort Larned at historic SaratogaRace Course was the farthest thing from Hernandez’ mind as heopened his jockey apprenticeship at Evangeline Downs smack in themiddle of Louisiana’s Cajun country. Topping off the experience wasthe presentation of the silver trophy by the First Lady of Saratoga,Mary Lou Whitney. The victory was the first G1 win for the rider.

Swept the two major races at Indiana Downs on Oct. 6, taking the•

Indiana Derby aboard Neck ‘n Neck, trained by Ian Wilkes, and theIndiana Oaks with Grace Hall for trainer Tony Dutrow. Quick facts about Richard Hughes:

Almost missed taking part in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup, his first since2003, due to 15 days of suspension which he suffered following twoinfringements against the recently-imposed new whip regulations. However, these were overturned when the British HorseracingAuthority decided to water down its new regulat ions andretrospectively erase any suspensions incurred. Hughes was soincensed at the injustice of the initial punishment that he gave up hisriding licence altogether and refused to ride again until the rules hadbeen amended.

Richard Hughes became just the second jockey in British racinghistory to ride seven winners on a card, accomplishing that feat at

Windsor Racecourse on Oct. 15 2012. He won seven out of eightraces on the card, and finished third in the other race. Frankie Dettoriis the only other jockey to ride seven winners on a card in Britain whendoing so on Queen Elizabeth II Stakes day at Ascot in 1996. “I feelover the moon,” Hughes said in the Racing Post. “I always said I mightdo it one day at Windsor - my lucky track. Without Richard Hannon Iwouldn’t be doing any of it.”

Notched a personal best of 144 winners in 2009 but surpassed that in2010 when he took a duel for the British Jockeys’ Championship withPaul Hanagan to the final day of the season, his eventual total of 189winners leaving him two adrift of his rival. In 2012 he is finally going tobecome Champion Jockey for the first time as, up to Oct. 23, he hadridden 167 winners, leaving him 49 clear of his nearest rival with lessthan three weeks remaining during the season.

He has had a series of successful winter riding stints in India and in2009-10 won India’s first four classics, including the Derby, aboardJacqueline. However, his participation there almost cost him the BritishJockeys Championship in 2012 as a 50-day suspension he picked upfor ‘not riding to instructions’ at Mumbai in April meant that he wasunable to ride during the first month of the British season. In the end itdid not matter - he won the title anayway.

In 2001, Hughes accepted the offer of being the retained jockey forPrince Khalid Abdullah, which he maintained until standing down inlate 2007. Since then he has been operating as a freelance with hisfather-in-law, Richard Hannon, supplying most of his rides.

He is the only big name flat jockey to have ridden regularly overhurdles in the recent past – notching over 40 victories including the1997 Irish Champion Hurdle on Cockney Lad (Ire). He is adamant thathe will fulfill his ambition of riding at least once over steeplechasefences before he ends his career.

Has ridden over 2000 winners in Britain and Ireland alone.•

Hughes is very tall for his profession and his riding style is reminiscentof another oversized jockey, Lester Piggott, who was Hughes’schildhood hero. He has had weight problems, but in recent years hehas managed to ride at 118 lbs.

His first Group 1 success came in 1995 in the Gran Premio D’Italia inMilan on the Paul Cole-trained Posidonas. In 1996, Hughes won hisfirst Classic when partnering the David Loder-trained Bahamian Knightto victory in the G2 Derby Italiano. His career total of top level wins

now stands at 29, with 2010 having brought a career best tally of six, including a trio aboard Canford Cliffs who went on to add two more in2011.

At the age of 15 he was apprenticed to his father, partnering sixwinners in his first season with his first success coming on VikingMelody (Ire) at Roscommon in August 1988. Six years and 150 winslater he moved to Britain to ride work for Richard Hannon and MickChannon. In 1995 he became stable jockey for Lambourn trainer MickChannon, for whom he rode the G2 King’s Stand Stakes winner,Piccolo (GB), at Royal Ascot.

Son of former top jump jockey and now successful trainer, DessieHughes. With this background, Hughes was always destined for acareer in racing, and he started riding at five and won his first ponyrace at eight years old.

Jarnet won the French 2,000 Guineas (G1) with Tin Horse (Ire) andthe Prix Daniel Wildenstein (G2) with Rajsaman in 2011.

Following his victory aboard Corre Caminos in the 2006 Prix Ganay hewent over five years without a Group 1 winner and in 2009 dropped toa lowly 37th in the French Jockeys’ Championship. But he broke thattop level drought in 2011 when guiding Tin Horse to land the Poule

d’Essai des Poulains and he has since built up a fine association withMoonlight Cloud, winning five of their eight outings together, includingthree Group 1 races. He finished 17th in the 2011 French title racewith 63 wins and, up to Oct. 23, is in 14th place in 2012 with 60 winsfrom 493 rides.

Over the past few years, Jarnet has played a much less prominent rolein the French jockeys’ championship but has instead concentrated onhelping his partner, Sandrine Tarrou, with her burgeoning trainingbusiness at Maisons-Laffitte.

Jarnet was very much playing second fiddle to Peslier in the Fabrepecking order by 1999 and at the end of that season their nine-yearassociation came to an end.

Two serious injuries, ironically both caused by falls in the paddockbefore races, blighted his career in the late nineties. He had to havepart of his spleen removed and missed five weeks of the 1997 seasonthen, a year later, was out for three and a half months having fracturedeight bones including the tibia in his left leg.

Won numerous big races during his period as champion, including asecond Arc in 1994 aboard Carnegie and, in England, the 1994Dewhurst Stakes and the 1995 2,000 Guineas on Pennekamp, who herates as the best horse he has ridden. However, his record in theFrench classics is surprisingly modest – his solitary successes havingbeen provided by Sunshack in the 1995 Prix Royal-Oak (St Leger) andBluemamba in the 2000 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (1,000 Guineas).

After finishing second to Dominique Boeuf in 1991, Jarnet won 124races from 807 rides in 1992 to become Champion Jockey for the firsttime. He won the “Cravache d’Or” (jockeys’ title) for the next threeyears, but in 1995 he finished only three winners in front of OlivierPeslier, who by that time was riding the many horses that Fabretrained for Daniel Wildenstein, and he was duly relegated into secondplace the following season.

Career really took off when he signed up to ride for the brilliant AndreFabre in Nov. 1990. Coincidentally, his very first ride for the training

maestro was a winning one aboard Subotica, who went on to providehim with his first Group 1 victory, in the 1991 Grand Prix de Paris, notto mention a famous triumph in the following year’s Prix de l’Arc deTriomphe.

Rode his first winner in Feb. 1985 at Cagnes-Sur-Mer on Danini.Apprenticed to Patrick Rago at Maisons-Laffitte then Yann Porzier atChantilly, he made steady progress with a further 136 winners inFrance between 1986 and 1990.
