    Painted and Contemporary Editions

Te ntin f an editin in painted wrks is rarely seen, as it is enerally nsidered tathuman error prevents the exact replication of a work twice over. Paintings, by their verynatre, are niqe.

Yet there are notable exceptions to this idea. In the 1960s, Andy Warhols screenprintsrided te ap etween te preise repliatin pssile in printin and variatin prdedy te man and. Marilyn perhaps his most famous series features ten very dierentprints, the artist exploiting the possibility for screenprinting to replicate an original imagewhilst allow for changing painted eects. At the same time, Warhol embraced art as a com-merial press, estalisin te Fatry Editins wrksp in rder t prde vast nm-ers f printed wrks.

In recent years, works by Damien Hirst have been some of the most prominent examplesf prdtin-line paintin. Te artist as prded 1,365 f is fams spt paintins,

though has only personally executed 5, saying in an interview that he couldnt be fuckingarsed t d it. Instead, te piees are reated y a team f assistants a pratie wiraises interestin qestins at wat nstittes atrsip. Fr hirst Art es n in yrhead: it is the conception, not the execution, which is the creative process.

Many ntemprary artists e hirsts statement if nt is metds prdin serieswi represent an nin preptatin wit a sinle idea. cntemprary slptr Ra-el Witeread (.1963) as eme knwn fr er asts f ildin interirs (einninwit 1990s Ghost) wi ave me t e knwn as Neative Spaes. Te mst reenteditins in te series are Detaed 1, Detaed 2 and Detaed 3 (2013) tree asts fshed interiors which were the subject of a recent exhibition at Londons Gagosian Gallery.

Wilst ritial respnses t te sw were enerally psitive, sme neative reviews s-ested tat ritis were rwin tired f te artists series-ase appra. one mmentatr

stated: Tese asts feel like inferir pies f a ne-riinal idea a limited editin t satis-fy Larry gasians wealty art lletrs.

    The Photographic Edition

The advent of photography completely exploded the denition of edition. Negatives meantthat original images were innitely replicable, whilst previously expansive series of printsean t lk limited and rare. Te idea f riinality ne aain ame int qestin, witritis qestinin te vale f piees wi ld e reprded wit ease. In is landmarkstdy Camera Lucida, Rland bartes laimed tat te prfsin f imaes made tem inert.Te ntent f te imae was irrelevant if it ld e repliated, it was n lner speial.

Contemporary photographer Thomas Ru responds to this critique with his series Portraits.

First produced in 1986, the series features the expressionless faces of hundreds of Ruspeers. Ru instructed his sitters to look into the camera and reveal nothing, stating I didntwant te viewer t et any infrmatin at s. Tey sldnt e ale t knw wat wefelt at that moment. Here, the editions in the series are original, but none are special; Rudelierately plays wit te idea tat riinality sld e interal t a wrks vale.

    Conceptual Editions

Editions often exist in a more abstract sense. Often, a work becomes an edition in a seriesbecause it once existed in the past, and is now being repeated. This is particulary true foreditins f perfrmane art r installatin piees. Wen repliated, te meanin f tesewrks emes, nt nly te interal meanin f te wrk itself, t te anin respnsef adienes t te wrk ver time.

The work features Abramovics voice, am-plied via loud-speaker, announcing ights to far-away, exotic places. It was rst realised inBelgrade in 1972, where it served as a bittersweet reminder of an exotic, unexplored world,

In series wi ntain many editins, it ane ard t separate riinal wrks frm laterfreries. Tis is espeially tre in te aseof prints, where it can be hard to dierentiate between prints and photographic reproduc-tins f prints. Tis as lead t a nmer f speialists in te area, w wrk t verify te

    The Editions Market

The market has several notable specialists, who exist to promote editions through exhibi-tins, atins and art fairs. Te Internatinal Fine Print Dealers Assiatin (IFPDA) jinsseveral of these bodies: a non- prot organisation, it joins leading art dealers, galleries andpublishers with expertise in the eld of ne prints. The organisation states its mission as
