On April 19, 2016, when Jillian Burden was 35 weeks pregnant with twins, she woke up at 2:30 a.m. to a gush that sent her scurrying to the bath-

room. “I thought, ‘my water broke.’ But when I turned on the light, I found myself standing in a large puddle of blood. It was terrifying,” says the 30-year-old blogger.

After five years of infertility and heartbreak, Jillian’s twin pregnancy, the result of adopted embryos, was hard won. Still, until this point, it had been relatively complication free. “I cried inwardly, ‘Please God, don’t let me lose these babies,’” Burden says. Her husband, John, a local pastor, quickly called 911.

Smooth Delivery After Health ScareFortunately, at Holland Hospital, the Burdens received good news: A test confirmed that yes, Jillian was in labor. Electronic fetal monitoring signaled that both babies’ heart rates were strong. The vaginal birth she had planned got the go-ahead, too. “I went from worrying that one or both babies were in distress to knowing I was going to have the delivery I was hoping for,” Burden says.

After 12 hours of labor, Burden gave birth to Ira, who weighed in at 5 pounds, 4 ounces, and Roman, who weighed in at 6 pounds. Both boys were healthy, but premature. They were transferred to Holland Hospital’s Special Care Nursery in the Boven Birth Center.

“It wasn’t what we had hoped for, but one Special Care nurse told me, ‘It’s no one’s choice to be here, but we’re going to make it the best plan B we can.’” Burden says.

The Best Care for Babies For details about Holland Hospital’s Special Care Nursery in the Boven Birth Center, please call (616) 394-3640 or visit hollandhospital.org/Birth-Center/Special-Care-Nursery.aspx.

Special Care for the Most Fragile PatientsThe Special Care Nursery provides advanced care for preterm babies born as early as 32 weeks gestation. In the eight-bed unit, “We focus on both the physical and developmental care of premature infants,” says Special Care Nursery manager Nicole Huisman, RN.

Staffed by pediatric hospitalists, a neonatal nurse practitioner and specially trained registered nurses, newborns receive the care and extra sup-port they need before being discharged home.

Establishing an appropriate feeding plan is one example of developmental care. Coordinating sucking, swallowing and breathing can be a challenge for premature infants. Little Ira and Roman were no exception. They required feeding support, which was provided by both the Special

SPECIAL CARE FOR THE SMALLEST INFANTS Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center Delivers Premier Care for Premature Infants

Care Nursery RNs and by Boven Birth Center lactation consultants.

“Our lactation consultants are important members of our care team. They work with our mothers, not only at the bedside as the infants attempt to breastfeed, but also by setting them up with pumping plans so that their milk supply can be established. The lactation consultants also run our Human Donor Milk program, which allows our infant patients to receive breast milk during the times that the mother’s milk supply is short of the infant’s needs,” says Huisman.

“The nurses were positive and caring. They respected how tender a time it was, especially when I was discharged before the babies,” Burden says. During the boys’ Special Care Nursery stay, the Burdens were encouraged to call in for updates and visit as often as they wanted. “We spent time just holding each baby against our skin,” Burden says.

Skin-to-skin contact helps regulate infant temperature, breathing patterns and blood sugar. It also aids in breastfeeding success and enhances bonding between the infant and parents.

Parents of premature infants can expect discharge around the time of the infant’s original due date. Ira and Roman were ahead of the curve, heading out just 10 days after birth to rejoin their parents and 5-year-old brother, Arie, who was adopted from Russia.

“It is really rewarding for the staff to be able to send parents home with their baby and with the knowledge they need to care for the newest member of their family,” Huisman says.

Nancy Westendorp, MSN, NNP-BC, cares for a newborn in the Boven Birth Center.

RUN SAFER, STRONGER, LONGER

Whether you run to win races, to lose weight or simply for the joy of it, running can be tough on your body. Up to 70 percent of runners develop injuries at some point. Try these tips from the running advisors at Holland Hospital Sports Medicine to help reduce the chance of injury:

3D Gait Analysis: Proven Injury Prevention

If running is your passion, you’ll want to check out 3D gait analysis, a proven path to injury prevention. Holland Hospital Sports Medicine now offers 3D gait analysis to scientifically evaluate your personal running form, identify your risk of injury based on biometric data and provide you with recommendations to prevent injuries in the future.

3D gait analysis provides: State-of-the-art, 3D cameras to precisely measure your movement patterns World’s largest database of biomechanics and clinical injury data to compare your gait to athletes of all levels from around the globePersonalized report discussed with you by our Sports Medicine physician and specially trained running advisorsSpecific recommendations to help you prevent running injuries in the future

3D gait analysis is now available at a special introductory price of $275, which includes the initial appointment and 3D gait testing as well as the follow-up appointment with results and recommendations. Like training and nutrition, 3D gait analysis is an investment in your running performance. It is not covered by insurance and does not require a physician referral. Replace worn shoes. Get new ones after 400 miles of use; that’s about every six months if you run 2 or more miles a day.

Choose your running shoes carefully. Make sure they provide good shock absorption and strong support. Never run a race in new shoes.

Run on a shock-absorbing surface. This helps decrease the pounding to your feet and legs. Avoid running for long periods on a slanted surface.

Warm up and stretch before and after you run. Include stretches for your calves, thighs and hamstrings.

Use proper technique. Avoid over-striding, or taking too wide a stride. Keep your shoulders back and avoid clenching your fists. Keep your elbows close to your body.

Increase your time and distance gradually. Take off one or two days a week. Doing so will allow your body time to recover.

When you do have an injury, apply ice if swelling occurs. Switch to non-weight-bearing exercises like swimming or bike riding until you recover. Consult your doctor or a sports medicine specialist for treatment options.

Resting Metabolic Rate TestingMetabolic testing is one of the best ways to determine the specific number of calories YOUR body needs for healthy weight loss. In the past, metabolic rates were either estimated (with a wide margin of error), or measured directly with expensive, cumbersome equipment. Today, a portable device allows us to accurately determine your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), or the number of calories your body burns at rest, through a simple, 10 minute breath test. Calculating your RMR will help determine your caloric “budget” and provide information to help create a diet and exercise program that will fit your specific weight loss goals. This 30-minute service also includes a feedback session with a Registered Dietitian or an ACE Certified Personal Trainer.

ELECTIVE PCI HELPS HEAD OFF HEART ATTACK

Holland resident Larry Poppema was in Florida last winter playing pickleball, a paddle sport that combines tennis, badminton and ping-pong, when he

first noticed a curious tightness

“I felt something in my lung, like when it’s really cold and your chest hurts,” says the 65-year-old part-time truck driver. “It lasted about five seconds but I didn’t give it a second thought.”

The odd sensation returned when Poppema was playing tennis, then again when line dancing with his wife, Sally, and yet again when he was back home in the spring walking on a hill in his neighborhood.

“I thought, ‘this is not normal,’” he says. He made an appointment with his primary care physician.

Close CallAfter undergoing a number of routine tests— including a cardiac stress test on a treadmill, which helps gauge blood flow to the heart—Poppema was diagnosed with coronary artery disease, also known as atherosclerosis.

“They found an 80 percent blockage in the main artery, which is known as the widow-maker,” he says. If this artery becomes 100 percent blocked, it can disable the entire front wall of the heart, caus-ing a massive and likely fatal heart attack. “Fortunately, Larry paid attention to his symptom pattern,” says Rhonda McCarthy, RN, practice manager at the Spectrum Health Heart and Vascular Center on Holland Hospital’s main cam-pus. “A lot of patients wait.”

A telltale symptom of coronary artery disease is chest pain with exercise, which may come and go at first, then become very regular. “You might not be able to walk as far as you used to without feeling pain in your chest,” says McCarthy. “See your doctor immediately if you experience this symptom.”

An Ounce of PreventionTo restore blood flow to his heart, Poppema had elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at Holland Hospital’s main campus. PCI is a nonsurgi-cal procedure that opens blood vessels in the heart that have been narrowed by plaque buildup. It’s often used in emergency treatment for heart attacks, but it can also be used for patients like Poppema who are at risk for a heart attack.

During elective PCI, an interventional cardiologist opens the blocked artery by threading a catheter— a thin, flexible tube with a tiny balloon at the end—through the main artery in the patient’s groin or wrist. The catheter travels to the area of arterial blockage in the heart. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wall, restor-ing blood flow through the artery. In Poppema’s case, his Spectrum Health interventional cardiolo-gist, Gregory A. Bernath, MD, also inserted a tiny, wire mesh stent to keep the artery open.

After staying overnight in the hospital and taking it easy for a few days, Poppema got the green light to return to his normal activities. “I’ve been playing pickleball again and riding my bike out towards the beach,” he says. “I feel good.”

Still, Poppema is surprised that he was struck by coronary artery disease. “I’ve been active all of my

Holland Hospital and Spectrum Health Heart & Vascular Center on the hospital campus provide a wide range of cardiovascular services. “The introduction of elective PCI greatly enhances cardiovascular services available on the Lakeshore,” says cardiologist William Frauenheim, MD. “This provides a tremendous benefit to our community in terms of ready access to heart and vascular experts, convenient scheduling and local, coordinated patient care.”

Holland Hospital is one of only four hospitals in Michigan and the only one in the Lakeshore area approved by the Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence to perform elective PCI without on-site open-heart surgery. Learn more about our Cardiology and Vascular Services at hollandhospital.org.

life and I’m the same weight I was in high school. You just never know,” he says. Heart disease is the number-one killer of men and women in the U.S. To thwart illness, “Listen to your body and know what your normal is,” Poppema says.

HOLLAND HOSPITAL IS AMONG NATION’S BEST Hospital Receives High Marks for Outstanding Patient Experience

Ffor the eighth year in a row, Holland Hospital has earned Healthgrades 2016 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for exceptional performance in providing

a positive experience for patients. The hospital’s high ranking places it among the top 5 percent in the nation.

“More than ever before, consumers use patient experience informa-

tion to evaluate hospitals and choose where to go for care,” says Patti VanDort, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Holland Hospital. “This award is especially meaningful because it reflects what our patients them-selves say about us.”

The results are based on patient surveys that evaluate many factors, such as cleanliness, noise levels in patient rooms, pain management, communication and responsiveness to patients’ needs. The measures also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to loved ones. Nearly 4,000 hospitals nationwide were compared to determine the top performers.

“It takes a total team effort across all areas of the hospital to consistently deliver the kind of care our patients have come to expect,” adds VanDort. “On behalf of our staff at all levels,

Surgery Expands to Serve Growing Need More than 10,000 surgeries were performed at Holland Hospital last year, and 2,500 more at the hospital’s outpatient Surgery Center on Felch Street. Those numbers will continue to grow as residents from the Lakeshore area and beyond take advantage of the expert surgical care available right here in Holland.

To keep pace, Holland Hospital will expand its surgery facilities this fall by adding another operating room at the outpatient Surgery Center. In addition, the size of several surgery suites at the hospital will be increased to accommodate advanced technology, while a new suite will be added for a total of 10 operating rooms organization-wide—all designed to provide more options and convenient scheduling for our surgery patients.

we’re honored to serve the community and com-mitted to earn our patients’ trust and satisfaction with every visit.”

National Leader and Michigan’s Top HospitalHolland Hospital also received national attention in Modern Healthcare magazine after earning the Truven Top 100 Hospital award for the 11th year in a row. This announcement follows the Distin-guished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award and a Top 50 Hospital ranking by Healthgrades, which rated Holland Hospital as the highest-performing hospital in Michigan. These awards are based on objective measures of clinical performance and an unbiased comparison of hospitals across the country.

“Working closely with our dedicated medical staff, our hospital team focuses on evidence-based best practices and continuous improve-ment, putting the patient at the center of all we do,” says Mark Pawlak, senior vice president of Quality, Information Systems and Hospital Operations, “Winning awards is not our goal, but national recognition like this helps validate the skill, service and commitment of our entire team.” Learn more about hospital performance and our five-star Centers for Medicare and Med-icaid Services rating at hollandhospital.org.

Treatment for GERD and Barrett’s Esophagus GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a common digestive problem in which stomach acid repeatedly enters the esophagus. Long-term exposure to stomach acid may cause Barrett’s Esophagus. Symptoms include frequent heartburn and chest pain, or there may be no symptoms at all. In some cases, it’s associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

The good news is that Holland Hospital’s reflux specialists can diagnose and treat Barrett’s Esophagus with medications, monitoring or surgery, if needed. It’s important to know that this condition can only be diagnosed by a medical professional with lab tests and cannot be treated successfully with over-the-counter pills.

Holland Hospital has a big birthday on the horizon. In 2017, the hospital will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

In September 1917, Holland Hospital opened its doors to its first patient—and began a long legacy of providing excellent, compassionate and increasingly innovative health care in the Lakeshore area.

Established in the former home of a local physician, the hospital filled an important need for health care in the growing Holland community. Over the next nine decades, thanks to the vision, generosity and hard work of area residents and health care providers, the hospital grew to become the leading provider of health care services in West Michigan’s Lakeshore communities.
