CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE

SO CLOSE! As of June 25, we are only $800 away from our Appeal assessment! Thank you to all who have so generously contributed. Just a few more donations will put us over the top. If you have been

thinking of making a gift to the Appeal, now is a great time to do it. Donations can be made on-line (www.bostoncatholicappeal.org) or by using the blue envelopes at the church entrances (drop them in the weekend collection). They can be one time gifts or pledges paid off monthly between now and January 2017. Whichever form you choose, please be sure to list Sacred Heart-Newton where you are asked for the parish name so your gift is properly credited.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Please pick up a name of a Confirmation student in the baskets of entrances of our church and pray for them along with your other intentions for the summer. This summer they will be learning to listen to the Gospel and the homily at Mass and seek Christ’s voice speaking to them as a wise and loving friend would do. May the Holy Spirit find a home in them on Confirmation day, October 16th! Don’t forget to pick up First Communion pictures at the rectory on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-5 and on Fridays until 12noon. Registration forms for returning families have been sent out. You may also get registration forms throughout the church during the summer or download forms from the Sacred Heart website at any time. Please drop them off (one per child) at the rectory during normal business hours or through the mail. Please note that the deadline for

registration for returning families is August 15,

2016 . A $25 late fee after this date will be added

this year to encourage returning families to

secure the first spots in the classroom over new

registrations due to class size being limited. This

SACRED HAPPENINGS

Wedding bells rang out at Sacred Heart on Saturday, June 25 as Samantha Carver and John Poutas, Jr. were joined in Holy Matrimony. We wish the happy couple all the best and pray that they will be blessed with a long happy married life.

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016

This July, Noel and Joe Terwilliger and Maddie Tango, will be traveling to Krakow, Poland for World Youth Day 2016 along with 40 representatives from St. John and St. Paul parishes in Wellesley. Initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1986, World Youth Day attracts more than one million young people from almost every country. World Youth Day (WYD) is an opportunity for the youth of our parishes to learn about their faith and to build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, people, and cultures. The week-long event culminates with Mass with the Holy Father. Our pilgrims will be leaving on July 21 for the event that will span from July 25-31. Please keep our three parishioners and all of the young people attending World Youth Day in your prayers. May they be enriched by the experience and moved to spread the joy of the Gospel to others.

THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL

Pope Francis “All the baptized, whatever their position in the church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization, and it would be insufficient to envisage a plan of evangelization to be carried out by professionals, while the rest of the faithful would simply be passive recipients.” (paragraph 120)

HONDURAS LENTEN FUNDRAISING

RESULTS The Honduras Committee wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and support of the 2016 Lenten Fundraising Campaign. This year, we were able to raise $18,145.56 for our sister parish in San Marcos, Honduras. Approximately $2,500.00 was collected at the Holy Thursday Liturgy, and will go towards replacing the church's 125-year-old pews which are in very poor condition. The rest of the funds were collected for the parish's student scholarship fund. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to add eight additional scholarships to the original forty!

PASTORAL PLAN UPDATE

Last week’s edition of the “Pastoral Plan Update” focused on the overarching aim of the collaborative’s three-year plan: the challenge and call to become missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. Within the plan, three priorities are named that will address this vision in different ways. The first priority is “Fostering a Personal Relationship with Christ.” Under this priority are two goals: First – “150 parishioners will actively participate in intentional adult faith formation in 2016 with a 10% increase in subsequent years.” While specific numbers are only guidelines (it is the Holy Spirit that draws people to particular experiences and encounters with Christ) our goal has already been definitively met in our collaborative this year. Our two largest adult faith formation events so far have been the small faith sharing group sessions during Lent titled “At Home with the Word” (151 Participants), and the first two retreats on the Year of Mercy (54 unique participants). We also had parishioners involved with “Meeting Christ in Prayer,” the collaborative book club, and many other programs throughout the year. Second – “Two Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) inquiry events will be scheduled each year within the collaborative with 12 personal invitations extended for each.” While this particular piece of the plan is still in the planning stage, it has forced us to look at what is needed to foster a vibrant RCIA program in the collaborative. Our efforts in this area will begin by identifying and training a RCIA team that will assist the pastoral staff in mentoring candidates during the process. Identification, selection, and training of the team is slated to take place this fall. Moving forward – These two goals have helped the staff identify different populations that are in need of further faith formation. Our offerings must not only focus on parishioners who are actively involved in parish life, but must also seek to engage those on the margins. In response, the collaborative has formed an Adult Faith Formation Committee in order to provide a coordinated approach to people at various stages in their relationship with Christ. We are certain that the parish staff cannot effectively implement these goals without the help of the Holy Spirit through parishioners willing to serve the

community. If you resonate with one or several of these goals, please contact the staff.

Brian Romer Niemiec, Pastoral Associate

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

The Sacrament of the Sick is being offered after the Masses this weekend. You are invited to participate. All those interested in receiving the Sacrament should gather in the worship space near the elevator entrance after the 4:00pm or the 9:00am Mass or in front of the altar after the 12:00 Noon Mass.

YOUTH MINISTRY TRAINING

“Empower” is Youth Ministry training at its best! It will be held on Saturday, September 10th at St. Francis Parish, Medford Catholic Collaborative. The day will include training, Mass, lunch and the best praise & worship music. The goal of the day is to help parishes lead teens closer to Jesus Christ! This event is sponsored by the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and Parish Support, and Life Teen. Registration opens May 1st with a discount for early registrations. All priests attend for free!

ARE YOU TRAVELING THIS SUMMER?

If you will be away from home at any time during the summer, you can locate a church wherever you may be by logging in to www.masstimes.org. You need only know your location or zip code in order to get a listing of nearby churches and Mass times. To get an automated response by phone call 1-858-207-6277 and state the zip code of your location.

HOW GOOD ARE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?

When we think about having an abundance, we usually think in terms of larger incomes, bigger homes, nicer cars. Isaiah and Jesus announce that God is bringing about a kingdom where abundance is measured not by possessions but by the quality of our relationships. Think about it. If this was how you were to be measured, would you be judged as rich or poor?

SIGNINGS

Fr. Shawn led a retreat in Salt Lake City last week before taking a few days off for a vacation. It won’t be long before he is off to Krakow for World Youth Day! Fr. Shawn Carey from Boston, Fr. Michael Depcik of Detroit, and Fr. Paul Zirimenya of San Francisco will be together on the Pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Poland. They are once again partnering with and Dube Travel for this encounter with the universal Church and our Lord. The Deaf delegation will join over a million young adults from across the globe for this opportunity to connect and grow deeper in faith, as we celebrate our Lord's Great Divine Mercy.

In Christ, Fr. Shawn

A TRUE CHRISTIAN MUST BE LIKE A LAMB Christ says to the 72 disciples in today’s Gospel, “Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.” Like lambs ... Don’t become wolves ... Because, at times, temptation makes us think: ‘But this is difficult, these wolves are cunning and I will be even more cunning than them, eh? Lamb. Not a fool, but a lamb. Lamb. With Christian astuteness, but always a lamb. Because if you are a lamb, He defends you. But if you feel strong like a wolf, He does not defend you, He leaves you alone, and the wolves will eat you alive. Like a lamb.” … One cannot walk as a Christian without joy, one cannot walk as a lamb without joy, Christians who are constantly complaining and whining are not doing any favors for the Lord or the Church.

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”
