Presentation to 2010 Award Recipients — NCBEA Judges and Co-Chairmen

Message from the Co-ChairmenWe are thrilled to celebrate with you the achievements of the 16 semi-finalists of the 2010 National Capital Business Ethics Awards. Each of these companies practices on a daily basis their commitment to ethical business practices. Each of these 16 semi-finalists is a “winner” in the eyes of those who, like us, view ethical standards as an important key to a successful business.

We are very pleased that the National Capital Business Ethics Awards, now in its tenth year, continues to grow and be recognized in the Washington DC-area business community as a valuable emblem of what is right in the corporate world. As we mark our 10th anniversary milestone, we would like to thank the members of the National Capital Chapter, Society of FSP that have devoted countless volunteer hours over the years to create and grow the NCBEA. Particularly, we mention in appreciation the former chairmen: Kevin Jones, George Reese, Mike Zorio, John Forster, Dan Haverkos and Andy Sirpis, who twice served as chairman. These individuals continue to provide wisdom and direction as the program grows and develops over the years.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our partners from the New Century College, George Mason University and Dean Nance Lucas, Ph.D. Thanks also go to Chris Ourand at Chris O. Communications for taking our message to the public; the members of the NCBEA committee who have dedicatedmany hours this year to making the program a success; our panel of distinguished judges; our sponsorsand other supporters and the membership of the National Capital Chapter, Society of FinancialService Professionals.

It is a very difficult task to distinguish the recipient of each award from among this year’s crop of out-standing semi-finalists. Please join us as we recognize those companies that in the view of our judging panel, truly are exceptional companies.

Business Ethics Awards

The Society of Financial Service Professionals, with its partners, established the American Business Ethics Awards in 1994 to honor companies that demonstrate a firm commitment to ethical business practices in everyday operations, management philosophies, and responses to crises or challenges. The ABEA now is held under the auspices of the Society’s Foundation for FSP. Recipients of the NCBEA are entered into the ABEA competition for the following year.

Founded in 1928, the Society has more than 17,000 members in 200 chapters nationwide who provide per-sonal, family, and business financial services. Members meet stringent educational, professional, and ethi-cal requirements. The mission of the Foundation is to foster research, education, and ethical practices among financial service professionals in order to benefit the public.

The National Capital Business Ethics Awards are sponsored by the National Capital Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. The 2010 award recipients will be honored tonight with a Crystal Award to the company’s president or chief executive officer.

AWARD CATEGORIES

Large — Companies with more than 250 employees Medium — Companies with 100 to 250 employees

Small — Companies with fewer than 100 employees Not for Profit — Trade and professional associations; foundations and charitable organizations

NCBEA reserves the right to alter the categories if warranted in any given year by the nature of the entrants. This is done prior to judging. In 2010, a change was made to add a “micro company” category, in order to allow more companies to receive recognition.

Financial service companies are not eligible to participate in the competition. A financial service company is defined as one that earns more than 25 percent of its revenues from providing financial services or from the sale of financial products.

Collaborative Opportunities at New Century College, GMU

George Mason University’s New Century College believes that helping students develop healthy moral imaginations, sound ethical reasoning and decision-making skills, and strength of character are essential competencies for effective corporate and community citizenship. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students deepen and broaden their learning about theories, models, and constructs related to the study and practice of ethics and leadership while examining compelling contemporary questions and dilemmas. Students in New Century College at George Mason University can go on to earn Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in integrative and individualized studies. The college motto is "Connecting the Classroom to the World" and this degree program represents the need for connected learning among ‘traditional’ disciplines and diverse contexts. The degree incorporates the strength of the disciplines with the acute need for multidisciplinary and integrative approaches in today's work environment. We help students connect and make sense of increasingly dispersed knowledge to address complex problems. Students are afforded numerous opportunities to extend their studies through internships, co-ops, study abroad, field studies, community-based service learning, and Minors is Leadership, Multimedia, and Nonprofit Studies. New Century College welcomes business, non-profit, and governmental organizations interested in hosting undergraduate students as interns to contact us. Further, we invite managers and leaders to register for George Mason University’s Institute for Leadership Excellence (MILE). This four-day institute is designed to enhance the leadership skills and effectiveness of managers and executives while preparing them for today’s dynamic and demanding workplace. Classes are co-facilitated by experienced leader-ship scholars and proven industry leaders, and include opportunities to interact with guest speakers and executive coaches throughout the program.
