There is a $945 million funding gap in the fight to endpolio. What is the impact? Campaigns in 33 countries willbe cancelled and 94,000,000 children won't receive thepolio vaccine. The three countries where polio is still endemic - Nigeria,Pakistan, and Afghanistan - are conducting aggressiveimmunization campaigns to vaccinate more childrenagainst the disease. Experts say with India now polio-free and the total number of cases at the lowest levelever, this is an opportunity to change history and eradicatethe disease entirely. To reinforce that commitment, manyworld leaders will be meeting in New York this month. The oral polio vaccine has cut the number of polio casesworldwide by 99 percent since 1988. For the past 10 years, though, eliminating that last percent has remained achallenge.Even though the total number of cases has declined, experts say every time they have knocked the virus outin one country, they have seen it pop up in another.“We have the highest population immunity throughoutthe entire world right now, and we are really talking aboutjust a few districts and a few countries with a populationthat has been missed for a fairly long period of time,”said Ellyn Ogden is worldwide polio eradicationcoordinator for the U.S. Agency for InternationalDevelopment.Dr. Liam Donaldson, Britain's Chief Medical Officer, whois head of the World Health Organization's IndependentMonitoring Board for polio eradication, spoke via Skype, and said the board is especially worried about Nigeria.“So our good news is mixed with continuing concerns,"said Donaldson. "The numbers were coming down, butover the last year we have seen a worrying increase inNigeria. Polio in Nigeria isn’t just a problem for thepopulation of Nigeria. A lot of the outbreaks that haveoccurred in other parts of Africa have been fed fromepicentres in Nigeria, so that’s why it’s very importantnot just for Nigeria but for other parts of Africa, as well.”Donaldson said polio eradication programs are not on trackto stop polio virus transmission by 2012.

While polio eradication is urgent, Ogden said these lastremaining reservoirs, such as Nigeria and Pakistan, makeit difficult to put a date on success.“It may not happen in the time frame that we are thinkingor in the budget that we are thinking, it may take longerand cost more, but I think the effort and the nearnessmerit additional investments by donors and partners thatit's still too early to give up on this ship," said Ogden.

LITERACY AND PEACEThe theme of International Literacy Day 2012 is Literacyand Peace. This theme was adopted by the United NationsLiteracy Decade (UNLD) to demonstrate the multiple usesand value that literacy brings to people.Literacy contributes to peace as it brings people closerto attaining individual freedoms and better understandingthe world, as well as preventing or resolving conflict. The connection between literacy and peace can be seenby the fact that in unstable democracies or in conflict-affected countries it is harder to establish or sustain aliterate environment.About the DayFor over 40 years now, UNESCO has been celebratingInternational Literacy Day by reminding the internationalcommunity that literacy is a human right and thefoundation of all learning. Why is Literacy important?Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal empowermentand a means for social and human development.Educational opportunities depend on literacy.Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, andessential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality andensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. There are good reasons why literacy is at the core ofEducation for All (EFA).A good quality basic education equips pupils with literacyskills for life and further learning; literate parents aremore likely to send their children to school; literate peopleare better able to access continuing educationalopportunities; and literate societies are better geared tomeet pressing development.

Polio case count this week: 10 new cases, 1 in Afghanistan,

8 in Nigeria and 1 in Pakistan. 2012 total = 121.

Ways To Overcome TheFear Of FailureIt is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried tosucceed -Theodore RooseveltBeing the mother of teenage children I have found thatone of the greatest fears that hold back many teenagersfrom realizing their full potential is a fear of failure. My empathy to my young friends that fear failure;fearing failure only means lower chances of success andmissed opportunities leading to bigger failures in life.Setting goals is something; reaching them could take

us into territories thatprompt us to give up,however the real gameof winning depends onnot giving up. We needto get confident andthen make positivedecisions to move on,avoiding the faults

committed and motivating and affirming ourselves towin.Ways that successful teenagers used to overcome fearof failure:Success is not easy; some risk is to be taken: Do we alldon’t realize that we would have never learnt to walkunless we fell, hurt ourselves at times and cried;similarly some of the greatest successes come out oftaking risk and initiative to try and keep going. Myintention is not to say that we need to take risks andbe rash; we only need to realize that unless we takethe first step of action we would only be missing onopportunities that could make us successful.Fear, the unknown has to be researched:Understand fear of failure; it could be unfounded andprobably due to just a fear of the unknown. Once fearis understood and all the positive and negative outcomesare clearly thought out we could probably conquer fearand turn out to be more logical.

Next is taking a decision and action: Thinking positivelycan only lay the foundation for success; a strong decisionand taking the first step is what leads to beingsuccessful. Once the commitment is made, justmarching forward with being targeted to our goals couldonly make us get all the fruits of our positive thinkingand action.Being objective and separating ourselves from thefear works: Experience the difference between thinkingthat I am fearful and that fear is a part of me thatstops me from moving forward, but I have a strong desireto achieve my dreams. It may be difficult to beobjective; deep breathing helps maintain the energyto avoid a burnout. It is neither advisable to dwell norignore the fear emotion, but to accept it and takenecessary steps to use strategies and tools to move on.Realize failure is important to succeed; success liesin things that work: It is true that it is better to try andfail then not try at all; setbacks, obstacles and failureare a part of the road to success. Failure, we need torealize is just a form of information or feedback ofaction; adjusting and making changes in the plans iswhat makes for failures turning into successes. Animportant lesson that is to be learnt is failure is neverfinal and success lies is pushing obstacles back andmoving forward.Expect the worst and also realize the benefits offailure: This philosophy has worked wonders; a failurerequires just some time to recover. Similarly failureshave their own important benefits; each failure is atrial that provides an opportunity to grow. Most peoplethat have failed prove to be great successes because oftheir experience, with many companies preferring thosethat do not fear failure and move on.To conclude, choosing to ignore the fear of failure andinstead embracing the philosophy to move on in allcircumstances would help overcome fear of failure.
