DAY 1: Tuesday 24th July, 2018

MELBOURNE TO DARWIN

Today we depart on our special tour to the Kimberley. Some of us have been to Darwin and Kakadu on other O’Shannessy’s tours, so for this departure only, we only spend one night in Darwin before setting off. We enjoy three nights in Kununurra, three days travelling through the Magnificent Kimberley, then three wonderful nights in Broome. What a holiday! With pick up from home we transfer to Melbourne Airport for

our flight to Darwin. Upon our arrival, our O’Shannessy’s Crew will greet us at the airport. Before checking in to our accommodation, we embark on a sightseeing tour of Darwin. We visit the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre. Here we view the impressive presentation of aircraft and displays depicting the Northern Territory's involvement in civil and military aviation. The

collection includes Mirage and Sabre Jet fighters, an ex-Royal Australian Navy Wessex helicopter (that helped in the clean up of Darwin after cyclone Tracy struck on Christmas Day in 1974) and an ex US Army Huey Cobra (the first purpose designed combat helicopter) with it's rocket pods and Gatling gun. The fully refurbished B-52G bomber on permanent loan from the USAF has been on display at the Aviation Museum since it's opening in 1990. We then spend the afternoon seeing the sights of the northern Capital including the port area and the city. After checking into our overnight accommodation, we have time to freshen up before dinner at the hotel.

OVERNIGHT: DoubleTree by Hilton, DARWIN

Page 5: 11 Day Tour - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours · Australia from the south to the north. Our first stop is the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the site of the only Australian war cemetery

DAY 2: Wednesday 25th July, 2018

DARWIN TO KATHERINE

After a delicious breakfast we say goodbye to Darwin and travel south on the Stuart Highway, named after John McDouall Stuart – the first European to cross Australia from the south to the north. Our first stop is the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the site of the only Australian war cemetery on Australian soil. There are 432 servicemen and 63 civilians, all of whom died as a result of Japanese bombing raids, buried in the cemetery. It’s a very peaceful place. We continue our journey through Pine Creek to Katherine. Of course, a visit to Katherine would not be complete without a cruise through Katherine Gorge. Sit back and relax as the tranquil surroundings transport us into a spiritual world of Jawoyn culture and history. Discover the music, stories and ways of the Jawoyn against a magnificent backdrop of cliff faces changing with the setting sun. Back on dry land, we enjoy dinner overlooking the Katherine River.

OVERNIGHT: Knotts Crossing Resort, KATHERINE

DAY 3: Thursday 26th July, 2018

KATHERINE TO KUNUNURRA ORD RIVER SCHEME

From Katherine we travel to Victoria River Crossing and Timber Creek at the northern edge of the Gregory National Park. This park covers 12,500 square kilometres and is in a transitional zone between tropical and semi arid regions. We then cross the border into Western Australia. The state of Western Australia is the largest in the country and covers approximately one third of the whole of Australia. Just over the border we turn south to Lake Argyle for our fish ‘n chip lunch. One of the many highlights of our tour to the Kimberley Ranges will be our cruise this afternoon from below the massive wall of Lake Argyle into Lake Kununurra, 55 kilometres downstream. The Ord River Scheme was a progressive and far sighted move to develop the tropical north of Western Australia. During “the wet” the rivers of the East Kimberley become raging torrents. At times the Ord River can empty 50 million litres a second into the Cambridge Gulf! OVERNIGHT: The Kimberley Grande, KUNUNURRA

DAY 4: Friday 27th July, 2018

EXPLORING KUNUNURRA

This morning we have time for an optional flight over Purnululu National Park from Kununurra (early morning is the best time to fly over the Bungle Bungles). The 2 hour flight is approx. $395 - own expense. For those of us who choose not to fly, we can have a sleep in! We have a slightly later breakfast this morning before we embark on a tour of Kununurra. The town was established as the residential and administrative centre of the Ord River Scheme - a huge irrigation scheme that was developed in the 1970’s. Our sightseeing will include a visit to Ivanhoe Crossing. This afternoon, we have a look around the shopping precinct - there is an interesting gallery and a diamond shop we might like to visit!! Later today, we visit the Mirima National Park, also called Hidden Valley. The small park is just two kilometres out of town. The sandstone formations here resemble the domes of the famous Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park), which is why they are sometimes called Mini Bungle Bungles – it’s a perfect opportunity to get an “on ground” experience. OVERNIGHT: The Kimberley Grande, KUNUNURRA

DAY 5: Saturday 28th July, 2018

EL QUESTRO TO THE NORTH

We have an earlier start to make the most of our day at beautiful El Questro Station, a million acre cattle station and wilderness park. First, we head to Wyndham. One hundred kilometres north of Kununurra, Wyndham is a small frontier town that typifies the character of the Kimberley. Established near the tidal waters of the Cambridge Gulf, the port town is guarded by the thrusting summit of the Bastion Range, towering 1,100 feet above sea level at its highest

Page 7: 11 Day Tour - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours · Australia from the south to the north. Our first stop is the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the site of the only Australian war cemetery

point. Many people say the “5 Rivers Lookout” from the top of the Bastion is one of the finest in Australia! We can’t be this close and not see it. So we drive to El Questro Station where we enjoy a barbeque lunch before our cruise through Chamberlain Gorge, through a three kilometre waterhole with towering cliffs and lively and interesting bird life. We return to Kununurra after a great day!

OVERNIGHT: The Kimberley Grande, KUNUNURRA

DAY 6: Sunday 29th July, 2018

KUNUNURRA TO HALLS CREEK

We’re on the road again as we travel south to the Argyle Diamond Mine where we meet a guide for a tour of the mine. The Argyle Diamond has put Australia on top as the world's biggest diamond producer. It is Australia's only major diamond producer, producing the extremely rare and valuable pink diamonds, as well as fine whites and intriguing champagne and cognac diamonds. The Argyle Diamond Mine is one of the most technologically advanced mines in the world. After the mine tour and lunch, we continue south to Halls Creek on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert.

OVERNIGHT: Kimberley Hotel Motel, HALLS CREEK

DAY 7: Monday 30th July, 2018

HALLS CREEK TO FITZROY CROSSING

As we continue west through the magnificent red mountain scenery of the Kimberley’s, we have a brief stop at the Yiyili Aboriginal Community to view their gallery. After our break, we continue to Fitzroy

Page 8: 11 Day Tour - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours · Australia from the south to the north. Our first stop is the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the site of the only Australian war cemetery

Crossing where we enjoy lunch at the Lodge, then check in. Later this afternoon we travel out to nearby Geikie Gorge where we take a cruise through this spectacular landscape. The Fitzroy River has carved its path through the fossil "Barrier Reef" formed 300 million years ago, resulting in mountainous cliffs and breathtaking scenery.

OVERNIGHT: Fitzroy River Lodge, FITZROY CROSSING

DAY 8: Tuesday 31st July, 2018

FITZROY CROSSING TO BROOME

Our destination today is Broome, but on the way, we have a little detour to see the Boab Prison Tree, 7 miles south of Derby, which was used in the early days as an overnight lock up for prisoners before the final trek into Derby. Capable of holding a number of prisoners, it has an entrance which is about one metre wide and two metres high. Have your photo taken in front of the water trough – at 120m long and 1.2m wide, locals claim it is the biggest water trough in the southern hemisphere. In Derby, our coach captain will show us the port area where the giant northern tides rush into meet the town and explain some of the rich history of the “oldest” town in the Kimberley. This afternoon, we drive back to the main highway, then onto Broome where we settle into our next three night’s accommodation.

OVERNIGHT: The Oaks Resort, BROOME

DAY 9: Wednesday 1st August, 2018

EXPLORING BROOME

Broome is situated on the coast at the southern tip of the Kimberley region. It is bounded by wide sandy beaches and turquoise water and enjoys a warm climate with plenty of sunshine. The discovery of rich pearling grounds off the coast in the 1880’s led to the foundation of

Page 9: 11 Day Tour - O'Shannessy's Quality Tours · Australia from the south to the north. Our first stop is the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the site of the only Australian war cemetery

Broome township in 1883. By 1910 Broome was the world’s leading pearling centre. Our first stop this morning is to the Pearl Luggers Museum. It’s often said that Broome’s pearling industry is as rich in culture as it is in pearls. Today we will be taken through an exciting array of pearling equipment with memorabilia from actual hard hat diving suits to the hand powered pumps which fed precious air to the divers below. To hear the stories first hand is a memorable experience. Later this morning we take the time to explore this romantic town of the north west, with its history entrenched in the pearling industry. Continuing on our tour, we’ll see the Port Area, then Gantheaume Point with its colourful rocks, dinosaur footprints and pools. We will take time to wander through the Japanese Cemetery. The

cemetery dates back to the very early pearling days and bears witness to the close ties Japan established with Broome in the early 20th century. The first recorded interment in this cemetery is 1896. Literally hundreds of young Japanese divers died either from the bends (divers paralysis) or from drowning. A large stone obelisk in the cemetery recalls those who were

drowned at sea in the 1908 cyclone. We drive through Chinatown and pass by The Sun Pictures building, the open air theatre owned by the Yamsaki family. We stop for lunch and have some free time for shopping - perhaps to purchase a pearl or two….before making our way back to the Resort. There’ll be some time for a dip in the pool before freshening up for dinner. Tonight we’re lucky enough to have dinner as we watch the sun set at Cable Beach.

Please note these activities are subject to availability. There is also the chance for a Camel Ride along Cable Beach (Approx. $65), or perhaps a comprehensive tour of the Willie Creek Pearl Farm (Approx. $105).
