What did English assess? This tested comprehension and writing for 55 minutes. It was worth 38 marks overall.
Section A of this paper tested comprehension skills. The questions were free response (not multiple choice) and ranged from 1 mark to 4 marks. Some of the questions only
needed one‐word answers while others needed to be answered in full sentences. Some questions asked the pupil to support their answer with evidence from the text (i.e.
use a quotation).
Section B tested descriptive writing. Candidates were asked to write descriptively on a topic (for example ‘A stormy day’). They were then given three bullet points
suggesting ideas for what to write about on this topic. This was not a test of telling a story or creating characters but rather of writing about one topic in detail.

General skills:
Little written / not enough effort put into the writing

May need more practice at comprehension in general as child's overall understanding of the passage was quite weak
Needs to give more detail when questions have more than one mark
Needs to use quotations from the passage more when asked for 'evidence' or 'with reference to the text'
Try to use own words more in answers; don't just repeat the text
Needs to use paragraphs for longer answers (e.g. 4 mark questions)
Section B
Needs to start or end in a more interesting way
Needs to use paragraphs to organise their writing
Needs to cut down on the amount of action / characters included and focus on description
Use more sensory description (e.g. descriptions including the five senses: sight, touch, smell etc.)
Use more figurative language (e.g. similes and metaphors)
Try to use the ideas suggested by the three bullet points under each topic
Use sentences with different lengths (e.g. short sentences when there is a dramatic moment as well as longer sentences including connectives such as 'however')
Try to use a wider range of vocabulary in your answers : do not just repeat the text
Some words spelt incorrectly
Keep your eyes on any grammatical mistakes
Needs to revise the use of different punctuation marks

Your child needs to use quotation marks when asked for evidence from the text. He has misread the task in Section B and answered two questions instead of one.

What did Mathematics assess?
This was a written test, in which students had to work out and answer 44 questions in 50 minutes. The marks for each question ranged from 1 to 5 marks. For questions with
higher marks (3 ‐ 5), students were awarded marks for their working out.
The test assessed students' application of topics in mathematics and also their ability to present their work accurately.
