11 PERIMETER AND AREA

Exercise 11.1

Q.1. The length and the breadth of a rectangular piece of land are 500 m and 300 m respectively. Find

(i) its area (ii) the cost of the land, if 1 m2 of the land costs

Rs 10,000.

Ans. (i) The area of rectangular land = length × breadth = l × b = 500 m × 300 m = 1,50,000 m2

(ii) The cost of 1 m2 of the land = Rs 10,000 So, the cost of 1,50,000 m2

= Rs 10,000 × 1,50,000 m2 = Rs 1,50,00,00,000

Q.2. Find the area of a square park whose perimeter is 320 m.

Ans. Perimeter of the square = 4 × side ⇒ 320 m = 4 × side

⇒ side = 3204

m = 80 m

Area of the square = side × side = 80 m × 80 m = 6400 m2

Q.3. Find the breadth of a rectangular plot of land, if its area is 440 m2 and the length is 22 m. Also, find its perimeter.

Ans. Area of rectangular plot of land = length × breadth = l × b

440 m2 = 22 m × breadth (b) 22 m × b = 440 m2

So, b = 2440 m

22 m = 20 m

Perimeter of rectangular plot of land = 2 (l + b) = 2 × (22 + 20) m = (2 × 42) m = 84 m Hence, Perimeter of rectangular plot of land is 84 m.

Q.4. The perimeter of a rectangular sheet is 100 cm. If the length is 35 cm, find its breadth. Also, find the area.

Ans. Perimeter of rectangular sheet = 2 [length + breadth] = 2 (l + b) ⇒ 100 = 2 (35 + b) ⇒ 100 = 70 + 2b ⇒ 100 – 70 = 2b ⇒ 30 = 2b

So, b = 302

= 15 cm Area = l × b = 35 × 15 = 525 cm2

Hence, the area of rectangular sheet is 525 cm2.

Q.5. The area of a square park is the same as of a rectangular park. If the side of the square park is 60 m and the length of the rectangular park is 90 m, find the breadth of the rectangular park.

Ans. The area of the square park = side × side = 60 m × 60 m = 3600 m2

As per condition, Area of the square park = area of the rectangular park ∴ 3600 m2 = area of the rectangular park ∵ Area of the rectangular park = length × breadth = l × b ∴ 3600 m2 = 90 m × b

So, b = 23600 m

90 m = 40 m

Hence, the breadth of the rectangular park is 40 m.

Q.6. A wire is in the shape of a rectangle. Its length is 40 cm and breadth is 22 cm. If the same wire is rebent in the shape of a square, what will be the measure of each side. Also, find which shape enclose more area.

Ans. We have, Perimeter of the rectangle = Perimeter of the square ⇒ 2(l + b) = 4 × side

side = ( )2 + 4

l b = ( )2 × 40 cm + 22 cm

= 2 × 62 cm4

∴ Side of the square = 31 cm ∴ Area of the rectangle = l × b = 40 cm × 22 cm = 880 cm2

∴ Area of the square = side × side = 31 cm × 31 cm = 961 cm2

Hence, the square encloses more area.

Q.7. The perimeter of a rectangle is 130 cm. If the breadth of the rectangle is 30 cm, find its length. Also, find the area of the rectangle.

Ans. Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (l + b) ⇒ 130 = 2 (l + 30) ⇒ 130 = 2 l + 60 ⇒ 130 – 60 = 2 l ⇒ 70 = 2 l

So, l = 702

= 35 cm

∴ Length of the rectangle = 35 cm Hence, area of the rectangle = l × b = 35 × 30 = 1050 cm2

Q.8. A door of length 2 m and breadth 1 m is fitted in a wall. The length of the wall is 4.5 m and the breadth is 3.6 m. Find the cost of white washing the wall, if the rate of white washing of the wall is Rs 20 per m2.

Ans. Area of a door = l × b = 2 m × 1 m = 2 m2

Area of the wall = l × b = 4.5 m × 3.6 m = 16.20 m2

So, Area of the rest of the wall = (16.20 – 2) m2 = 14.20 m2

∴ The rate of white washing of the 1 m2 wall = Rs 20 Hence, the rate of white washing of the 14.20 m2 wall = 14.20 × Rs 20 = Rs 284

Ans. (a) Length of the base (b) = 7 cm Height (h) = 4 cm So, area of the parallelogram = b × h = (7 × 4) cm2

= 28 cm2

(b) The length of the base (b) = 5 cm Height (h) = 3 cm So, area of the parallelogram = b × h = (5 × 3) cm2 = 15 cm2

(c) The length of the base (b) = 2.5 cm Height (h) = 3.5 cm So, area of the parallelogram = b × h = (2.5 × 3.5) cm2

Q.6. DL and BM are the heights on sides AB and AD respectively of parallelogram ABCD. If the area of the parallelogram

is 1470 cm2, AB = 35 cm and AD = 49 cm, find the length of BM and DL.

Ans. In parallelogram ABCD, AB (base) = 35 cm Area of the parallelogram = 1470 cm2

DL (height) = ? Area of the parallelogram = b × h ⇒ 1470 cm2 = 35 cm × h

Q.8. ΔABC is isosceles with AB = AC = 7.5 cm and BC = 9 cm. The height AD from A to BC is 6 cm. Find the area of ΔABC. What will be the height from C to AB i.e., CE?

Q.4. A gardener wants to fence a circular garden of diameter 21m. Find the length of the rope he needs to purchase, if he makes 2 rounds of fence. Also, find the costs of the

rope, if it cost Rs 4 per meter. [Take π = 227

Ans. We have, diameter = 21 m, so radius = 212

Circumference of circular garden = 2πr = length of the rope

= 2 × 227

× 212

= 66 m

So, length of the rope to make 2 rounds of the fence = 2 × 66 m = 132 m Hence, the cost of 132 m rope = 132 × Rs 4 = Rs 528

Q.5. From a circular sheet of radius 4 cm, a circle of radius 3 cm is removed. Find the area of the remaining sheet. [Take π = 3.14]

Ans. Radius of the outer circle (R) = 4 cm

Area of the outer circular sheet = πR2

Q.6. Saima wants to put a lace on the edge of a circular table cover of diameter 1.5 m. Find the length of the lace required and also find its cost if one meter of the lace costs Rs 15. [Take π = 3.14]

Ans. Diameter of the table cover = 1.5 m

∴ Radius of the table cover (r) = 1.52

m

Circumference of the table cover = 2πr

= 2 × 3.14 × 1.52

= 4.71 m

Q.7. Find the perimeter of the adjoining figure, which is a semicircle including its diameter.

Ans. Perimeter of semicircle = Half circumference of circle + diameter = πr + d [where, d = 10 cm and r = 5 cm]

Ans. Diameter of the table top = 1.6 m

⇒ Radius of the table top (r) = 1.62

m = 0.8 m

Area of circular table = πr2

= 3.14 × (0.8)2

Q.9. Shazli took a wire of length 44 cm and bent it into the shape of a circle. Find the radius of that circle. Also find its area. If the same wire is bent into the shape of a square, what will be the length of each of its sides? Which figure encloses more area, the circle or the square?
