From Your Clergy

Passover story. When we tie togetherblessings, conversation, and storytellinginto one communal and intergenerationalsetting, we are bridging the gap between the past and the present, andthe particular and universal. We use thistime to remember the events that beganto define our shared history as a Jewishpeople, ask questions, and think about

how to continue passing those lessons down tofuture generations.

The Seder provides an opportunity to bring the value of Tikkun Olam into our homes. At the same time that we symbolically relive theExodus from Egypt through the retelling of thestory, we also are bettering our understanding of modern day oppression. When we rememberour own history as strangers in the Land ofEgypt, we think about those who may beseparated or feel like strangers in our societytoday. As we recite our blessings and enact therituals incorporated into the Seder, we also cantake the chance to dive into discussion aroundthe themes of redemption and freedom and ofhunger and homelessness, considering how ourhistory of oppression relates to our modernworld. We rejoice in our communal redemptionfrom slavery and we look ahead to a time when we, and all people are free.

Wishing everyone a Chag Pesach Sameach and thatyour Seders are filled with meaningful moments ofdiscovering, questioning, and community.

It’s one of my favorite times of year... the season of Seders. We just passed Tu B’shvat, where I had the joy ofwatching our ECC and Religious Schoolstudents participate in their Tu B’ShvatSeders, celebrating the ‘Birthday of theTrees’ and thanking God for creating thebeauty of the world around us. And wesoon will approach Passover, where wegather yet again for the ritual of a Seder, both athome and with our congregational community. The Seder literally means “order”, due to thestructured order of events that happen during thefestive meal. I would say that the Passover Seder is particularly special for a few reasons:

Sitting down with family and friends for theSeder brings us around the table in a way wedon’t usually experience in today’s world.Dinners are often rushed and distracted withplaces to go, cell phones, and work or school onour minds, and the Seder gives us time to slowdown and go through the order with intentionand pause to the busy nature of our lives. Itgives natural moments where participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to activelyparticipate in meaningful rituals, conversation, and learning. Even more so, it’s a ritual thattraditionally happens in the home, not in thesanctuary, and a chance to infuse your sederwith old family traditions or new creativetouches.

The Seder also allows us the chance to pray, learn, and discuss all at the same time, providinga unique space to think about our history, ourtradition, and the lessons we learn from the

Family Programming

On Saturday, February 1, 70 people from our 3rd through 6th

Grade community came together for a special Family TikkunOlam Program. First we took the time to think about volunteeringopportunities with which we have been involved. Familiesthen learned about children from all over the world who had come up with an idea that turned into making a very bigdifference in the world. We used that as our inspiration whileeveryone began preparing food for Toni’s Kitchen in Montclairwhich is a local soup kitchen. Together we made 12 pans of

lasagna, 12 chocolate pudding pies, 6 large salads and fourhuge pots of minestrone soup. The clients at Toni’s Kitchenreally appreciated the donation. It was a wonderful andmeaningful way to spend a Shabbat morning at TBJ.

Stay tuned for more information on our next Tikkun Olamprogram which will be a river clean-up.

MARK GERSON, THE TELLING: HOW JUDAISM’S ESSENTIAL BOOK CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE Friday, March 27th

Mark Gerson who became a Bar Mitzvah at TBJ in September of 1985, is the author of the forthcoming book about the Haggadah, “The Telling: How Judaism’s Essential Book Can Change Your Life” (St. Martin’s in January of 2021). He will enable Seder leaders and participants to generate ideas for Seder discussion from 3-5 passages in the Haggadah that will most enlighten others at their table—and in so doing to make the Seder what it should be: the most interesting, inspiring, instructive and meaningful evening of the Jewish year. Mark is an entrepreneur, philanthropist and author. He is also the co-founder and Chairman of United Hatzalah (Israel’s crowd-sourced system of volunteer first response).

MARK OPPENHEIMER Friday, May 1st

Mark Oppenheimer, with his UnOrthodox podcast hosts have compiled a truly unputdownable compendium of all things Jewish and Jew-ish, spanning popular culture, religion, history, politics, and language. The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia comes to life with the vibrancy of over 300 color images, illustrations, and infographics. There are flowcharts following the matriarchs and patriarchs of Genesis, and illustrated essays dedicated to food, feminism, and days for fasting. With a lot of verve and little bit of irreverence, The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia is an eccentric handbook to “being Jewish,” a feast of eccentric knowledge for Jews and non-Jews alike.

My art is inspired by the voices from nature and theworld around us. If I had to name a theme, I might say“The Hidden truth”. Much of my art may not be whatis, at first apparent. I use what is naturally found, attimes by difficult exploration, to bring out what maynot be readily understood. I do this without posing norvia extreme manipulation in post processing. Usingunderstanding of lighting, angles, focal points and thesubject matter, I seek to bring awareness. May mywork create discussion, discourse, debate andencourage change.

A photographer can but hope to capture a moment intime. As the circle of life is all around us. I try toaccurately represent what is found but not readilyseen. To capture the truth, wonder, promote thought, awareness in life. Every image has a story, reason andmessage to convey. They are not for the quick view. They are to be studied and allow reflection. I may hikemiles, climb out on that precarious ledge, take hours to set up for that one shot, perhaps it will effect change for years. Using myconsiderable experience from old manual settings & extensive darkroom work. I intermingle with today’s, modern day technology,Such as my adaption of a 1950’s lens to a 2015 camera body. I employ many techniques, the most important of which is observation.

ALL methods & materials are true archival, conservation grade, Fine Art paper, chemicals, tape, mat etc. From the original shot to myhand cutting the mats, glazing, & frames, it is all done, only by me. Welcome to my Mind’s Eye
