TOOL BOX TALK 11 August 2010 SITE SMOKING REGULATION, HOUSEKEEPING SMOKING POLICY In accordance to accepted norms, smoking shall not be permitted in all shared offices, public places such as Mess halls, training halls or living rooms. Smoking too shall not be allowed anywhere on site except places designated as smoking places. In the recent past, we have noticed that some workers smoke indiscriminately on site. This has become unacceptable as we approach the gas in stage of the project with flammable gas coming into various points on the site. It is a dismissal offence to smoke anywhere outside the smoking areas on site. SMOKING AREAS : Areas where smoking shall be allowed on site shall be so designated with signs. Smokers shall also be expected to ensure that the place is not unnecessarily kept dirty with cigarette butts and ashes. All butts/ashes must be contained in the large drums and sand provided for such areas. Every smoker who smokes outside the smoking area will be dismissal immediately from site Smoking in areas with flammables could lead to this SITE DISCIPLINARY MEASURES: Smoking outside the designated smoking areas is a dismissal offence. Smoking in live areas such as PE Barricaded Area shall also be reported to the Police. Smoking in live plant / areas shall be treated as acts of sabotage. WASTES FROM DISMANTLED PLATFORMS: Scaffolders who dismantle scaffolds must endeavour to at least gather the wastes together before leaving. This shall be part of the crew’s job. The wastes may then be removed by the few house keepers we have left on site. HOUSEKEEPING As we gradually conclude construction work and at the final stages of punch list, temporary platforms are being removed. We are beginning to see the evidence of the sections that did not actually carry out house keeping as part of their daily activities. From the wastes coming from the dismantled platforms, we are beginning to see a particular waste item on almost all temporary platforms so removed. We must also realise that all sections have been affected in the staff down sizing. To this end, all sections must be involved in housekeeping activities if we must leave a clean site behind us to the Client. Wastes and waste materials left at grade and height by Scaffolding (after dismantling) and Electrical / Instrument
