The deepening drought is not just a concern for farmers its a concern for all Minnesotans and anyone who cares about our state economy. Minne-sotas agriculture and food sector generates nearly $75 billion in total economic activity for our state,

and the sector has a total em-ployment impact of more than 340,000 jobs. Anything that hurts our agricultural produc-tion puts those economic ben-e ts at risk. MDA is working with partner agencies to provide farmers with information about helpful programs, re-sources and information on our drought website at www.mda.state.mn.us/drought. The site has information about crop and

weather conditions, as well as federal and state re-sources that can help farmers deal with the impacts of those conditions. We will continue to update our site to make sure it includes the best information to help Minnesota farmers dealing with this situation. We are also working with the Minnesota De-partment of Natural Resources to make sure that farmers, lawn and garden centers, plant nursery managers and other land owners are aware of the growing concerns about water availability for 2013. We are encouraging our farmers to take into account the possibility of drought as they make business and cropping plans for 2013. Speci c recommendations for lessening drought impacts will vary from one farm to the next, but here are four general tips Minnesota farmers can take to ensure they are as prepared as possible. 1. Consider installing a drainage water manage-ment plan and structures this fall to capture rainfall and snowmelt. While drainage systems are de-signed to move excess water off cropland, a prop-erly designed managed system also can help retain moisture. Farmers can start the planning process by talking with contractors, suppliers and their local Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of ce. 2. Consider additional conservation practices, such as leaving old fence rows and eld wind breaks intact to reduce wind erosion that might be a big-ger problem during very dry conditions. Reduced tillage, no-till and other tillage options can be good strategies to conserve soil moisture and reduce wind erosion. 3. Carefully weigh the prospects of continued dry weather when planning what, where and how to plant in 2013. As always, crop advisors and seed dealers can help farmers weigh their options. 4. Farmers with irrigated acres may consider tools for managing water as ef ciently as possible. This may include water distribution uniformity checks, irrigation scheduling tools, and low pres-sure conversions. We have several months to go before anyone plants crops for 2013, and plenty of things can still happen. As we all know, weather patterns can shift dramatically in Minnesota. We will hope for gener-ous rain and snow between now and springtime, but out of prudence, we must be prepared for the alter-native.

Calf Care Connection Workshops, Nov 13, 14 Raising dairy calves signi cantly impacts pro tability and doing things right is a must. Thats why PDPW members developed the PDPW Calf Care Workshops: Nov. 13 in northwestern Wisconsin, and Nov. 14 in northeastern Wisconsin. This years Calf Care Workshops feature a new twist: classroom science combined with tours to demonstrate practical, on-farm application. At each location, Dr. Becky Brotzman of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will pres-ent, Healthy Environments for Healthy Calves. Then, after lunch, tours will depart for area farms to view calf facilities and discuss care and feeding techniques with the calf managers of those farms. The Nov. 13 workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Holiday InnCampus Area, 2703 Craig Road, Eau Claire, Wis. The afternoon tours will visit Hamlin Valley Farms in Strum Wis. and Arrowhead Farms in Chippewa Falls, Wis. The bus will return to the Holiday Inn by 4:15 p.m. The Nov. 14 workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. at Millhome Supper Club, 16524 Lax Chapel Road, Kiel, Wis. The afternoon tours will visit Hanke Farms, Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and Hochkammer Dairy Farm, Manitowoc, Wis., returning to the supper club by 4:15 p.m.

Managing Our Farms through Turbulent Times, Nov. 15 Keynote speakers include Gary Sipiorski, Dairy Development Manager, Vita Plus Corp. and Ted Matthews, counselor with Farm Business Management. There will also be breakout sessions by Farm Business Management instructors. The Guided Discussion Groups are in-tended to be an opportunity for farmers to share concerns and ideas, and ask questions about the current turbulence in agriculture. They will begin with a brief opening presentation by a facilitator, and discussion will follow. This event will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Nov. 15 at the International Event Center in Rochester, Minn. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

What is a Fair and Pro table Farm Rental Agreement?, Nov. 15 Landlords, farmers, agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative meetings being held across Central and Southern Minnesota. These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have never been higher and determining a fair and pro table farm rent agreement is a challenge in todays economy with near record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values. Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satis es the land owner and the farmer is a chal-lenge. David Bau, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental

Dairy CalendarSubmit your dairy events to [email protected] or write to: Dairy Star, 522 Sinclair Lewis. Ave., Sauk Centre, MN 56378

rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair andpro table rental agreement. Input costs for 2013 will be presented along with current 2013corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2013 costs and what is affordable rent thata farmer will be able to pay in 2013, the rate of return to the landlord at current market valuesand examine exible rental agreements. Make plans to attend one of these meetings now. Attendees will receive several informa-tive worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what is a fair and pro table 2013 farm land rental rate is. This workshop is free to attend. There are two opportunities to attend this workshop in Carver and Scott Counties. Bothworkshops will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012. The rst workshop will take placeat 10 a.m. at the Carver County Extension of ce in Cologne, Minn. The second workshop will take place at 1 p.m. at the Scott County Extension of ce in Jordan, Minn. Questions about these workshops should be directed to Laura Kieser, Agriculture Ex-tension Educator, by calling 952-466-5306 or 952-492-5386. Laura can also be emailed [email protected].

Cover Crops Field Walk, Nov. 17 The relationship between cover crops and better soil is the focus of a short eld day Nov.17, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Brian Hazel dairy farm north of Lanesboro. This is a free event, but to help guarantee enough coffee and rolls, please reserve a spot by contacting Caroline van Schaik at 507-523-3366 or [email protected]. Hazels farm is located at 27919 State Highway 250. Soil health has long been understood as foundational to successful farming. Healthy soilis directly linked to better production and farm nances, as well as to erosion control and re-lated resource priorities. In a recent statewide video conference on the topic, Minnesota State Conservationist Don Baloun of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) put an emphatic priority on helping farmers and other landowners do everything possible to build better soil. One of the most important tools for building healthy soil is to integrate cover crops intorotations. Hazel, a member of the Fillmore County Soil and Water Resources District board of directors, will talk about his use of tillage radishes and oats, and how these cover crops t into his management decisions. Peter Hartman, area soil scientist with NRCS, will coverthe basics of soil and present research results related to the effects of tillage on soil health. Biology professor Bruno Borsari of Winona State University will explain how the biologicalactivity below ground and plant growth above ground interact.

NOTE: Mid American Auction Co. and Henslin Auctions are excited to bring you this premiere Central Minnesota dairy dispersal auction. This is a tremendous opportunity to purchase high quality, high producing, farm-fresh herd replacements in volume. Rosewood Dairy purchased the original facility from the Schmiesing family along with the existing herd that was established in the mid 1950s. The Schmiesing herd was well known throughout Central Minnesota and the Rosewood management has continued this great tradition producing one of the most functional high producing herds in the area. This herd has been on of cial DHIA for many years with current herd average at an amazing 3X 28,525 milk, 3.9% 1037 fat, 3.1% 875 protein, 90 lb. tank average, records to over 50,000 pounds of milk, individuals producing over 150 pounds per day. SCC runs from 200,000 to 240,000. Many are recently fresh with several cows and heifers due near or soon after sale time. The herd will contain approximately 10% Brown Swiss X Holstein composite cows, along with a few Red & White Holsteins. Entire herd is headlock broke, housed in free-stall facility and milked in parallel parlor. The herd is arti cially bred using exclusively select sires with limited use of good Holstein bulls as clean up. Sires and service sires include, but not limited to: Oman, All That, Macguinnes, Landscape, Billard, Styx, Snake and Fork, among others. An extensive herd health program has been in place for several years through Dr. Moe with the Stearns Vet Clinic. All cattle have been vaccinated and boosted seasonally. Hooves trimmed regularly with onsite facility. Cattle will be TB tested prior to auction. With the volume of dairy cattle offered on this auction, lots may vary from one to four head per lot. Any lots containing multiples will be sorted to age, freshening, production and quality. If you are in need of young, extremely well uddered, farm-fresh high producing of cial DHIA herd replacements, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend the Rosewood dispersal. Catalogs with complete breeding, freshening and production information sent upon request. Please phone (320) 352-3803 or visit www.midamericanauctioninc.com.
