GOOD SEEDS Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the parables - the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amusing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

RESTING IN GOD’S LOVE… “Take my yolk upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Mt. 11:29 One thing Jesus asks of me: that I lean on him; that in him and only in him I put complete trust; that I surrender myself to him unreservedly. Even when all goes wrong and I feel as if I am a ship without a compass, I must give myself completely to him. I must not attempt to control God’s action; I must not count the stages in the journey he would have me make. I must not desire a clear perception of my advance upon the road, must not know precisely where I am upon the way of holiness. I ask God to make a saint of me; yet I must leave to him the choice of the saintliness itself and still more the means to which it leads. - St. Teresa of Calcutta - From Conversion to Christ edited by Steve Mueller from the works of Pope Francis, Mother Teresa, and Henri J. MEETINGS AT HOLY FAMILY We are currently working on a new schedule of meetings for the parish. When the schedule is complete, we will post it in the bulletin so you can put dates in your calendars. Our meeting night at Holy Family will be either the first, second or third Wednesday of the month. The fourth Wednesday is being reserved for St. Joseph in Palmyra. Watch the bulletin for more information!

Sunday Soundbite… “Earthy” images and a practical message—that’s today’s Gospel. Jesus tells several parables–two of them dealing with gardening and one dealing with baking. A gardener finds weeds in among his crop and suspects the work of an enemy. The verdict: Wait until harvest to sort things out. The tiny mustard seed grows to become a great, sheltering tree. A woman makes bread and uses just a little yeast to make the dough rise.

For the gardeners and bakers in the congregation today, proclaiming and understanding this Gospel may be easier than for us without a green thumb, who don’t know their way around the kitchen. What would Jesus talk about if he were preaching in person today in your parish or mine?

Somehow I think he’d look around the church and imagine the world outside those walls. He’d consider the problems facing the parish, and the struggles of Christians to witness in a largely secular world which nevertheless hungers for a message of hope. And then he’d choose imagery that would fit the situation.

Lacking a personal appearance by Christ as guest preacher this Sunday, we must stay with the Gospel. Try to listen carefully and find there the message of hope: That no matter what obstacles it faces, no matter how small the efforts of Christians seem, the Kingdom of God will flourish. - Fr. Greg Friedman Franciscan Father Greg Friedman is the former host of American Catholic Radio. During his years at Franciscan Media, Father Greg wrote and directed Assisi Pilgrimage: Walking in Faith with Francis and Clare, which appeared on ABC-TV stations nationwide, and received a 2008 Telly Award for Excellence. Currently, Father Greg is stationed at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, D.C.
