I will be contacting the individuals who helped last year and will welcome any new participants who are interested in volunteering their time. We will be scheduling our first meeting regarding the Jubilee sometime in November. Our seasonal members will be returning and we are looking forward to seeing them. This also means the holiday season is upon us. We need donations brought to the next two meetings of non-perishable items for the food pantry in Lady Lake. We will have a bin available at the next meeting. I have been told this particular food pantry also provides meals for a few of The Villages families who are less fortunate. Please don’t forget your artistic holiday cards. We will be giving the cards to The Villages Regional Hospital after the December Meeting. Many individuals are alone and really appreciate receiving a holiday card. I hope the holidays will bring much warmth and joy into your lives. Happy Thanksgiving to all! NOVEMBER 2016: THE VILLAGES, FLORIDA VOLUME 5 / ISSUE 11

The critiquing session was once again an opportunity to push ourselves to create better paintings. All our painters picked up some tips of the trade, and I am sure everyone found how easy it is to share, suggest, and simplify ideas to help in their art. Barbara Perron informed me that she and three of the teachers had sessions with The Villages High School on October 3, 4, and 5. Their efforts were well received by both students and faculty. We are hoping TVHS will continue to be another successful SEYA venue. Congratulations to Phyllis Galsky who won the contest for picking a name for the newsletter. The name chosen is CPPG Pencil Points. It is time to start thinking about the 5th Annual Jubilee Show and Sale which is scheduled for March 18, 2016. Once again Linda Carpenter and Dawn Mastrodonato will be co-chairing this event. I will be contacting the individuals who helped last year and will welcome any new participants who are interested in volunteering their time. We will be scheduling our first

Our seasonal members will be returning and we are looking forward to seeing them. This also means the holiday season is upon us. October’s Critiques Were

Enjoyed by All

for number of times to offer this program. Members liked receiving two different critiques, and we received a suggesti on to better mana ge the rotation of the critiquers. Given this feedback, we will again offer Round Ta ble Critiques in A pril 2017, so be sure to bring your painti ngs for helpful feedback. Thank you to our critiquers Sue Franz, Jan Jones, Nan Klein, Ruth Paul, Barb Perron, Jackie Ullrich, Doree Voychick, and Pam Young and to the many members who brought paintings for the Round Table Critiques. You all made the October program a success. We received 21 evaluation forms and the responses continue to be overwhelmingly positive. Members were comfortable with the critique process, received helpful information, and found the experience to be a positive use of their time. They would like to do it again, and twice a year was the most common suggestion for number of times to offer this program. Members liked receiving two different critiques, and we received a suggestion to better manage the rotation of the critiquers. Given this feedback, we will again offer Round Table Critiques in April 2017, so be sure to bring your paintings for helpful feedback.

Bus Trip Cancelled

The November 17 bus trip to the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa has been cancelled. We needed 45 people to participate and only had 25 participants. A survey of where members would like to go on future trips was gathered at the October CPPG meeting and results will be used to plan a trip for the February/March timeframe. If you would like to submit additional feedback, please contact Diane Dumas at [email protected] or call her at 508-851-4811.

Programs November 9, 2016: Two Information Presentations

Our November 9 Monthly Meeting will feature two presentations related to the workings of the Guild. First up will be Eleanor Strickland, the CPPG Web Master. Eleanor will show us our website, how to navigate it, and new elements that have been added for us. Second will be a presentation of our Scholarship Committee. We will introduce committee members, describe the application process they developed, and share the poster they designed for advertising the award in local high schools.

December 14, 2016: Holiday Party

In December we will again celebrate the holidays with a Taster’s Choice Chef contest, donation of greeting cards for The Villages Regional Hospital, and collection of non-perishable foods for the Lady Lake Christian Food Panty. We will also have holiday entertainment at the party. Watch the December newsletter for more information about this part of the festivities.

Taster’s Choice Chef:

Chefs can submit any type of dish they choose. We suggest your holiday favorite, which can be either a sweet/dessert dish, an appetizer, or a main/side dish.

We are asking that no entry require electricity to keep it warm. This will simplify table layouts and (hopefully) reduce bottlenecks at the competition tables.

Voting will again involve putting quarters in cups to indicate your favorites, and all proceeds will again go to the Christian Food Pantry of Lady Lake.

We will have plastic sacks available for members to take home leftovers, if there are any.

Please contact Linda Carpenter by December 1 if you will be submitting a dish and tell her which type. You can reach her at [email protected] or 352-259-1464.

Members who don’t wish to compete in Taster’s Choice Chef but would like to bring items to the meeting are encouraged to do so as we will have a separate table for those items.

January 11, 2017: Dennis Kaminski – New Products

Save the date as we will be ringing in the New Year with Dennis Kaminski from DK Art Supply & Custom Framing in Leesburg. Look for more information about this program in future newsletters.

Food Pantry Donations

We will be collecting donations of non-perishable goods (including pet foods) for the Christian Food Pantry in Lady Lake. Bring your donations to the November and December monthly meetings. Delivery to the food pantry will be made in December.

Greeting Card Donations We are asking members to bring seasonal greeting cards that they have had made from their colored pencil work. Cards should be in plastic sleeves along with envelopes (but not IN envelopes). Dawn Mastrodonato ([email protected]; 352-750-6614) has plastic sleeves available, and instructions based on her presentation from last year are available on the Guild’s website (www.pencilpainters.com). We are hoping members can donate at least six cards, and all those donated will be displayed on a side table at the December meeting. They ultimately will be presented to The Villages Regional Hospital for distribution to patients who are hospitalized over the holidays.

You can sign your cards with your name and The Colored Pencil Painters Guild, if you wish. You can download our logo from the Guild’s website. It is located at the bottom of the left-hand navigation bar. Right-click on the image to copy it; paste the image into a word-processing document and save the document to your jump drive. The image of the logo can be re-sized at Office Depot to fit on the back of your greeting card.

Last year we donated over 150 greeting cards to the hospital. We hope to do as well, or better this year as the patients appreciate the gesture.

Scholarship Committee

Our fundraiser was ongoing at the time this newsletter went to press. So we don’t yet have a total of funds raised this year. The Belk Charity Sale, which is the event for which we are selling tickets, is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2016. If you would like to buy a ticket, or sell some to friends and neighbors, contact Linda Carpenter. And come to our November meeting to learn more about our scholarship and the work the Scholarship Committee has completed to date.

Rohan Exhibits

The Rohan Exhibits – Gallery of Winners and the themed Open Exhibits – will be changing out in January. If you have won a ribbon for your colored pencil work in The Villages in the past, and you would like to show it in the Gallery of Winners, contact Lydia Busch.

The theme for the Open Exhibits will be Reversal Painting. So we are looking for members who have painted reversals on black for the Open Exhibit. In addition, we will be spotlighting the work of students currently in Frank Zampardi’s Reversal Painting I class. Contact Linda Carpenter if you would like to enter a reversal painting in the Open Exhibit. Guidelines and registration forms for both Rohan Exhibits are on the Guild’s website.

Fall Festival

Our first (hopefully annual) Fall Festival Fine Art Sale and Show is scheduled for Saturday, November 12 from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Rohan Regional Recreation Center. At press time, we still had tables available so members are encouraged to register as an exhibitor for this event. Even if you don’t have work to sell, consider sharing a table or tables with a friend and show your work. There are likely to be many new residents of The Villages attending this event, and we want to introduce them to the wonderful fine art that our members create.

Rules as well as registration forms and the exhibit hall floor plan are available on the Guild’s website. And if you are not planning to show your work, we can use your help as greeters and monitors. Contact Linda Carpenter or Lydia Busch for more information about the Fall Festival, to register as an exhibitor, or to volunteer.

Product Review: Masking Fluid

by Jan Jones

Heaven only knows what possessed me, but I took a photo that I liked and decided to make a colored pencil painting out of it. Well, what’s different about that, you say? Raindrops, that’s what: my photo was full of raindrops. To make realistic-looking raindrops with colored pencil, each one needs to have a highlight that is the white of the paper. Thus, my dilemma – how to make sure I leave a white

highlight in each of the numerous raindrops throughout the photo transfer and value mapping process. I immediately thought of masking fluid and remembered that I had a bottle of it that I had purchased years ago. Hooray for me, I managed to find it -- Supernib by Masquepen. They may have changed the applicators in the years since I purchased mine, but this one is similar:

I love the applicator for making narrow lines and small dots. Mine also has a wire that remains in the narrow applicator

tube to keep it from blocking up when it is not in use. However --- my masking fluid NEVER DRIED! It remained tacky for weeks and when I attempted to remove it, it left color on the paper. Obviously, not what I needed for my raindrops. (I have since found out that I may have a bottle of faulty fluid or perhaps it deteriorated with age -- hmmm, just like me!)

Well, a trip to DK Art Supply solved my problem. Dennis introduced me to a Molotow Grafx Art Masking Liquid Pump Marker.

Although the applicator is not as precise as the Supernib, it worked well for my purpose. I was able to put down lots of small dots for my raindrop highlights or enough for a complete raindrop and was pleased to find that the fluid dries immediately upon applying. I was careful when applying colored pencil over the top of the masking fluid because the sharp point can easily remove it, but I was able to see the small dots with no trouble because the fluid is blue. Once I completed the area surrounding a drop, the dried fluid was easily removed to reveal the white of the paper. On occasion, I used a Grafix Rubber Cement Pick-Up eraser to remove dried fluid that had been applied too thinly.

Bottom line: I can only recommend the Molotow. Keep it in mind for protecting small areas in your paintings while you complete the area around it.

SEYA Takes CPPG to

The Villages High

School

Linda Carpenter, Jane Routte, Cathy Burns, and Barb Perron completed our first program of the year on October 4, 5, and 6 with Christy Pelts’ Drawing II class at the Villages High School.

Her class was in the process of working on a still life of a fruit bowl where part of the picture would be in black and white and part in color. We showed the students how to blend and layer with yellow, red, and blue pencils to help them with the colored part of the fruit in their still life pictures.

The students did a wonderful job. Most completed either an apple or a peach, including a leaf on each piece of fruit. The students were amazed with what they could do with only three colors, and so are we!

We are looking forward to seeing their completed assignments. Barb Perron
