1.0 INTRODUCTION In April 2016 Soil Engineering Geoservices Ltd were instructed by Fairhurst (The Engineer) acting for and on behalf of McIntosh Plant Hire Aberdeen Ltd (The Employer) to carry out a ground investigation at Kingsford and Backhill Landfills, Aberdeen. The investigation comprised the formation of rotary percussive boreholes for the installation of combined groundwater and gas monitoring wells, and the removal and backfilling with cement bentonite/grout of previous boreholes. This factual report presents the results of the fieldwork and laboratory testing undertaken together with information on the ground and groundwater conditions encountered. The fieldwork was carried out between April 11th and April 29th 2016. 2.0 PURPOSE, SCOPE AND REPORT FORMAT 2.1 Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to determine the subsurface ground and groundwater conditions and in particular the extent of any contamination of underlying soils at the site. This information was obtained from a combination of intrusive investigation techniques and laboratory testing. 2.2 Scope of Work The brief for this factual report comprised the following items: 1. To form exploratory holes on site. 2. To install gas and groundwater monitoring instruments. 3. To monitor on site installations. 4. To undertake laboratory tests on samples recovered from exploratory holes. The sources of information used in the compilation of this report are detailed in the list of references on page 9. 2.3 Limitations This report has been prepared in accordance with the project specification. Soil Engineering accepts no liability for any deficiencies in the report that arise from the specification’s non-compliance with either European or British Standards. This particularly applies to exploratory hole spacings and depths and to the scope of laboratory testing. It should be noted that the investigation data on which this report is based is only indicative of the actual ground, groundwater and ground gas conditions that exist at the locations of the exploratory holes and may not be representative of the conditions that exist on the site as a whole. 2.4 Report Format This report is presented in the following format: Factual information comprising: - • Description of fieldwork • Exploratory hole logs

• Laboratory test results • Maps and plans • Photographs 3.0 DESK STUDY INFORMATION 3.1 Scope of Study A formal comprehensive (phase I) desk study was not requested by the Engineer for this investigation. The following sections however provide general details of site location and description, together with site geology as ascertained from published maps. 3.2 Site Location and Description The site is located approximately 5 miles west of Aberdeen city centre and to the immediate east of Westhill (approximate National Grid Reference NJ 845 065). The site comprises generally level land in the southern half of the site which then slopes gently up to the north. The site has been previously landfilled and trial pitting carried out by Fairhurst from November 2015 indicates the waste material to include concrete, timber, metal, plastic, ash and brick. The location of the site is indicated on Figure 1 in Section C of this report. 3.3 Geology From the available information on the 1:50,000 scale Geological Survey map of the area1 the site is shown to be underlain by Quaternary sands, silts and clays with peat deposits in the north-west and Diamicton in the south. These in turn overlie the Aberdeen Formation of Neoproterozoic age, consisting of psammite and semipelite. This formation has been subjected to intense folding and migmatisation. 3.4 Previous Investigations The Engineer has supplied details of trial pitting carried out on the site in November 2015 by Fairhurst which comprised of nine trial pits. 4.0 FIELDWORK 4.1 Scope of Fieldwork The scope of the fieldwork was specified by the Engineer and was undertaken in general accordance with Eurocodes2 and, where there is no conflict, also with BS 59303. Soil logging has been undertaken in accordance with the relevant European Standards4,5 listed in the references for this report. In accordance with the specification and drawings provided by the Engineer, Soil Engineering were required to set out and survey the exploratory holes and to undertake the testing and sampling regime. Boreholes were formed using rotary openhole drilling techniques. Where descriptions are given on the borehole logs, these are generally the driller foreman’s description obtained from examination of flush and cuttings. Boreholes BH01 and BH04 however have been logged by an Engineering Geologist from split spoon samples obtained from Standard

Penetration Testing. The exploratory hole locations are shown on the site plan presented in Section C of this report. 4.2 Inspection Pits In order to reduce the risk of damaging buried services, the location of each exploratory hole was scanned using a cable avoidance tool (CAT). As a further precaution, an inspection pit was hand excavated to a depth of 1.20m at each location, followed by a further scan of the base of each pit with the CAT. 4.3 Rotary Drilling Boreholes BH01 to BH16 inclusive and BH08A were formed using rotary openhole drilling techniques. The holes were formed primarily to install combined groundwater and gas monitoring wells. The boreholes were extended to depths between 6.00m and 9.00m, using a large diameter (135mm) casing to facilitate the installations. Additionally the existing borehole 002 was drilled out and backfilled with cement bentonite/grout. In BH01 and BH04, Standard Penetration Tests6 were carried out using a split spoon at 1.0m intervals, extending to 1.5m intervals after 5.2m depth. The results of these tests are given as a Standard Penetration “N” value or as a blow count for a given penetration at the appropriate position on the borehole logs. In selected boreholes, disturbed samples were taken from the inspection pits in order to enable laboratory testing to be undertaken. The symbols and abbreviations used on the rotary borehole logs are explained on the exploratory hole log legend and notation sheet presented in Section A of this report. 4.4 Installations A slotted 50mm diameter UPVC tube was installed in each of the boreholes. This tubing was slotted over varying depths with the slotted section being surrounded by pea gravel and the remaining upper section being surrounded by a bentonite seal with concrete overlying it. A metal stopcock cover was concreted into place on each of the installations and a plastic cap with a gas valve was placed onto each tube to facilitate long-term groundwater and gas monitoring. A schematic of each installation is shown on the relevant borehole logs presented in Section A of this report. 4.5 Groundwater and Gas Monitoring In accordance with the Engineer’s instruction monitoring of gas in boreholes BH01 to BH16 inclusive was carried out following the completion of the boreholes with three return visits programmed. Monitoring for methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and oxygen gases was carried out using a Geotechnical Instruments GA5000 gas analyser. Where practical, visits to site were made on days of low or falling barometric pressure in order to try to record the more onerous gas conditions. The results are presented in Section A of this report. It was understood that oil may be present within some of the installations and an oil/water interface meter was used during the monitoring to confirm the presence of the oil. 6 BS EN ISO 22476-3:2005 + A1: 2011: Geotechnical Investigation and Testing – Field Testing – Part 3: Standard Penetration Test.

5.0 LABORATORY TESTING 5.1 Scope of Testing All geotechnical (soils) and chemical (environmental) testing was specified and scheduled by the Engineer. The scope of the testing was required to assist the Engineer in establishing any potential site contamination levels. 5.2 Geotechnical Soils Testing The programme of laboratory testing was carried out in accordance with BS 13777. The testing was carried out at the Leeds laboratory of Soil Engineering, a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No 1265. In addition, chemical (sulfate and pH) testing was undertaken by Chemtest, a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 2183. Testing was undertaken in order to assess concrete requirements from BRE Special Digest No 18. Samples were prepared in general accordance with BS 1377, although final analysis of total sulfate was performed using ICP and aqueous extract using Ion Chromatography. Results are given on the summary sheets with individual test plots presented in Section B of this report. 5.3 Environmental Testing A programme of environmental soil and gas testing was scheduled by the Engineer. Testing was carried out Chemtest Ltd, a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 2183 and SAL UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 1549. Testing was carried out in accordance with the methods identified in the test reports. The results of the environmental testing are presented in Section B of this report. 6.0 RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION 6.1 Scope of Commentary The results of this investigation appear to broadly concur with the published geology summarised in Section 3.3 of this report. The following sections are only intended to provide a summary of the ground conditions encountered during this investigation whilst the logs presented in Section A of this report give a detailed account of all the strata observed. 6.2 Made Ground Made ground was encountered to depths between 0.20m and 8.00m in all of the exploratory holes. This was found to comprise either clayey gravel or gravelly clay with various other materials generally comprising timber, house bricks, wood, concrete and plastic although locally other materials were also identified. 6.3 Superficial Deposits Underlying the made ground, both boreholes BH01 and BH04 encountered sand and gravel deposits with numerous cobbles and boulders and these deposits or similar are likely to have been encountered in the majority of the other boreholes.

6.4 Groundwater Groundwater was encountered in most of the boreholes at various depths. A summary of exploratory hole groundwater inflows is given in Table 1 in Section A, whilst the logs presented in Section A of this report provide full details of all groundwater information. A specialist oil water interface probe was also utilised during the groundwater monitoring to identify any contamination. The results are presented in Section A. 6.5 Gas Monitoring The results of the gas monitoring are presented in Section A of this report. The monitoring, which was carried out where possible during days of low or falling atmospheric pressure, produced methane to a maximum of 72.8%; carbon dioxide to a maximum of 20.6%; carbon monoxide to a maximum of 3ppm and hydrogen sulfide to a maximum of 13ppm whilst Oxygen levels were found to a minimum of 0.4%.
