Niebrugge finishes off victoryNEW CHAMP STRUGGLES IN FINAL ROUND, BUT PERSEVERES FOR WIN

Jordan Niebrugge and Charlie Danielson made amess of the final hole Thursday afternoon, but con-sidering how they had separated themselves fromthe field up to that point, it really didn’t matter. Oneof those long-hitting college players in the final pairingseemed destined to win the Wisconsin State AmateurChampionship, sponsored by CliftonLarsonAllen. It turned out to be Niebrugge, who led the tour-

nament from start to finish but almost kicked itaway on the last hole. Niebrugge finished at 6-under-par 282 (69-66-71-76) to finish one stroke ahead ofDanielson (72-74-68-69–283) at The Bog in Saukville. It was a contest to the very end, as Niebrugge

made a double bogey on the par-4 18th hole, andDanielson recorded a bogey. Both hit poor tee shots, with Niebrugge ending up in a hazard on the rightand having to take a drop. Danielson found a bunkeron the left and couldn’t advance his ball to thegreen on his second shot. He eventually missed along par putt, leaving the door open for Niebruggeto two-putt for double bogey and the victory, whichhe did.“It was frustrating all day,” Niebrugge said after-

ward. “My dad reminded me after the round that Iactually won. That kinda cheered me up.”Niebrugge, who plays out of The Bull at Pinehurst

Farms in Sheboygan Falls, entered the final roundwith an eight-stroke lead over his friend Danielson,of New Richmond GC.Danielson had an up-and-down final round, but he

was able to chip away at Niebrugge’s lead, eventu-ally shooting 69 to Niebrugge’s 76. In the six-holestretch from No. 7 through No. 12, Danielson went

birdie, double bogey, eagle, birdie, bogey, birdie.“I wanted to go out and beat Jordan rather than

him having a bad round,” Danielson said. “I didn’t thinkcoming into the round I had any shot to win until(the 17th hole). Obviously, Jordan is a great playerand I know his game, so I never got ahead of myself.”Niebrugge appeared to be fighting his swing early

in the round, and some of those loose shots re-sulted in bogeys. His approach shots went long onNos. 3 and 6, leading to bogeys. He shot 37 on thefront nine and 39 on the back and only made twobirdies all day (on the first and ninth, both par-5s). But Niebrugge has been a match play wiz this

season – winning the WSGA Match Play in June andthe U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship lastweek – and much of his success in that format canbe traced to his excellent short game. It was on dis-play at The Bog, as he rolled in several nice par-sav-ing putts in the final round.Robbie Jacobsen of Racine CC, who finished third,

actually found himself in second place halfwaythough the front nine at 4 under par after he madebirdies on the first and fifth holes. But he finishedwith a 3-over-par performance on the back nine, shot 72 and landed in third place at 286.Alex Gaugert of the Links at Grand Geneva in Lake

Geneva finished fourth with scores of 70-73-75-72–290. And Matt Ross of The Legend Clubs shot 73-71-75-73–292 and was fifth.“Going into the tournament, I thought I had a pretty

good shot at winning because I’ve been playing wellthe last couple of weeks,” Niebrugge said. “I go intoeach tournament with a little more confidence.”

It was a bittersweet final pairing for JordanNiebrugge and Charlie Danielson. Whilecompetitors on the course, more important, thetwo are best friends off of it.Their friendship began at age 8 at an AAU golf

tournament – the first time they ever played to-gether. Neither remembers who won, but bothremember the experience. “We only got in twoholes before it rained,” said Niebrugge. “But we still got medals,” added Danielson.Despite the stress of a tight finish at this year’s

State Amateur, “This was one of the most funtournaments I’ve played in,” said Danielson.

“Coming in, I was hoping it would be a finish likethis, with Jordan and me playing in the last group.Coming this close was a little tough. But losing tomy best friend, I’m happy for him.”On Saturday, the two fly to Virginia to play in

the Western Amateur at The Alotian Club. Afterthat, they will be participating in the 113th U.S.Amateur in Brookline, Mass. With so much timetogether, will the subject of the final round comeup? “We’ll talk about it and look back at whathappened, how each other was feeling,” saidNiebrugge. “But we’ll kid about it. We had a lot of fun.”

GETTING DOWN AND DIRTY Sponsoring a golf tournament has

become more than a display of signs andbanners throughout the course featuringthe company name. As sponsor of the2013 State Amateur Championship, accounting firm CliftonLarsonAllen madethe most of its opportunity – and had agreat time in the process.Rebecca Shaffer, enterprise market-

ing manager for CLA, spent countlesshours with WSGA executive director Rob Jansen in preparation for the tournament. “I’ve been working with himsince last year on ideas to really maxi-mize our investment in it,” said Shaffer. The firm’s employees and executives

became hands-on volunteers, blendingin with WSGA officials, engaging withplayers and spectators. “We wanted tomake sure we had a presence so peoplecould put a face with the companyname,” said Shaffer.

“It’s been a lot offun for us. This isjust one week butit’s a partnershipthat lasts all yearand it’s been agood one for us.”

CHAMPIONSHIP CHANGED TO STROKE PLAY IN 1971The Wisconsin State Amateur Championship has been played since 1901, and it was contestedas a match play tournament until 1970. Since that time, Wisconsin’s marquee amateur champi-onship has been a stroke play competition, held over 72 holes, on some of Wisconsin’s finest golfcourses. The list of winners since 1970 (right) is an impressive one, including PGA Tour winnersand several individuals who left their amateur days behind and now work as PGA professionalsat golf facilities around Wisconsin.
